  1. This may be OK with a wingsuit, but be careful with a regular jumpsuit. I used to keep my phone in my cargo shorts/sweats until one of my buddies had a tree landing and his phone was out of reach, in his pants pocket, under the jumpsuit, under the leg straps. My phone is now in the jumpsuit chest pocket. Life is too short to drink cheap beer.
  2. I was on the Anthem over New Years. There was no option to purchase additional time. They did not have the capacity to give everyone who wanted it their free 1 minute. After being unable to book online, I was one of the first to board the ship. The first thing I did was go the the area to sign up. They told me I was lucky as it had been sold out for a while, but a few additional sessions were just added. So book early and don't expect more than the 1 minute. It was kinda cool to be in a tunnel looking out over the stern of the ship. Life is too short to drink cheap beer.
  3. Let's see, the broken airplanes will not get us to altitude. Life is too short to drink cheap beer.
  4. I'm doing the same thing. My wife and I will be at the first show of the tour. At least I will not feel guilty about spending the summer at the DZ. Life is too short to drink cheap beer.

  6. I agree with the others about not messing with fuel tanks, but you are talking about putting $700 into a 98 Honda. What about proseal, an aviation fuel tank sealant? I've used this stuff for the construction of 8 fuel tanks. It works. Just ensure the area is cleaned and scuffed before applying. Follow the directions to the letter, give it a solid 2 weeks to cure before filling the tank and you shouldn't have a problem. The cost should be about $20 delivered. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/prosealant.php?clickkey=11825 Life is too short to drink cheap beer.

  8. Oops. Demonstrated, not limit. It's been a while. I was always taught that the demonstrated number was a good place to put a "limit." I agree that "maintain control" is the deciding factor, and that gusts & rotors make it more... Interesting. True, but airline ops (121) changes things. A crew that exceeds a max demonstrated crosswind is taking a personal risk if things go south. I can't think of a single crew member that I was paired with that would exceed the published max crosswind component. We just didn't want to take that risk. With that said, I've landed piston singles in conditions that exceeded the max demonstrated crosswind component. Under 121, with paying pax in the back, never. Life is too short to drink cheap beer.

  10. Anyone know any details? I'm used to the idea of trespassing just being a fine under provincial Civil Law, but that's in Canada, while in the US I guess there is more of criminal trespass . What did they supposedly steal, other than altitude? From Google: "Burglary in the Third Degree (NY PL 140.20) is the most common degree of Burglary charged throughout New York City and the surrounding region. One is guilty of this crime if one knowingly enters or remains unlawfully in a building and one has the intent to commit a crime (any crime) while there. As noted on the front page of the Burglary section, this crime is a “D” felony punishable by up to seven years in state prison." Drug dealers selling to school children get much less. 13. Even though I live on Long Island, I did my A in 2012 at The Ranch and consider it my home DZ. They have found a good balance between tandems, students and fun jumpers. After my A, I had no problem finding others to jump with. There's typically a bunch of guys who travel from NYC to The Ranch. Life is too short to drink cheap beer.

    Where Were You?

63'- Before my time 86'- In high school, but home sick 01'- Driving RJ's for the regionals, it was my leg from Columbus, OH to LaGuardia. The rampers were chocking our nose gear as the first plane hit, so I was flying up the Hudson at the same time those sons-of-bitches were following it south. Life is too short to drink cheap beer.
  15. I'm hardly one to give advice, but the Silhouette is known for soft openings. I've put about 150 jumps on mine and every opening has felt like falling into a feather bed. I get lower back pain and a soft opening canopy was high on my list of requirements. Life is too short to drink cheap beer.

  17. There was talk about taking a bridge tour. I haven't been able to get one since 9/11. RCI claims "security" reasons. I've brought dive gear and also did cruises where I rented. For me, if I'm only planning on one dive, then I rent. If multiple dives are planned, then I bring my gear. Cleaning and drying in the cabin can be a PITA, but it's nice diving my own gear. I know it, I'm comfortable with it, it's just a better experience, IMO. You're really only talking about mask, fins, snorkel, booties, reg and BC. All the cold water/specialty stuff stays home. 18. When it comes to used vs new, buy what YOU want and can afford, not what others say. I'm still a noob, so don't consider this advice from someone wiser. I've noticed this board discourages newly licensed from buying new gear. I tried to take that advice and had a hard time finding affordable gear in my size. At my 2 local DZs, many new A holders bought new gear. This is new containers and a mix of new/used mains, AADs and reserves. Some things to consider: -A modern container should be able to handle three sizes of mains, so that allows you to downsize twice. Decide what you want out of the sport and how far you expect to downsize. For me, I will never downsize below what my original container can handle. - There's a lot to be said for the comfort of a custom harness, especially one you may have for a long time. Are you in a position of spending a few extra dollars for this convenience/comfort? - It may take some time to find/put together a used rig. During that time, you're either not jumping, or renting. At my local DZs, that's $40/jump, or $100/day. 50 jumps would be north of $1K. That adds up real quick and starts to close the gap between new and used. - If you want a Cypres, then new provides the full life. I'm not trying to make the case where new is better than used. When you look at the big picture, buying some components new may not be the worst thing. FWIW, I bought a new container, AAD, reserve and used main. I made no decisions until just before getting my A. No regrets and wouldn't change a thing. In the end, talk to your instructors and local shop. They'll steer you in the right direction. 19. I didn't see it mentioned, but tape the booties where you want the the Shoe Goo to end to leave a perfectly straight edge. Obviously remove the tape before the Shoe Goo dries. Life is too short to drink cheap beer.
  20. If the location in your profile is accurate, then I would highly recommend your local Pro Shop. Myself, along with other noobs, bought our rigs locally last year. There is something to be said for supporting your local pro shop. His ability to stay in business supports your ability to keep jumping when you see a frayed closing loop, need rubber bands, need another set of goggles, need an expert set of eyes to look at the rig, etc, etc, etc. Life is too short to drink cheap beer.
  21. You don't. I didn't, and it was the best possible decision. Ignore all these fluffy platitudes other people are offering-up in this thread; it's all chickenshit. If there's any reason to think you shouldn't tell her, then you shouldn't tell her. It's like your collection of bongs and porn and the sex you've had in the oddest of places. You don't tell your mom about those, do you? Of course not; you'll never tell her about them, and no harm will ever come from that sensible self-censorship. Keep your yap shut. Some day, you'll thank me. Sometimes that backfires. I only told a select few that I took up this sport. One of those was a high school buddy who moved 600+ miles away and hasn't seen my family in 10 years. Last year his father passed. He came back for the funeral. Out of respect, my mom went to the wake. You can see where this is going. That was the weekend I got my A. Awkward moments followed. Life is too short to drink cheap beer.
  22. I went through the program last year and had the same experience. For me, the nerves got progressively worse until it peaked at jump #6. I asked my instructor on the ride up on that load if this feeling ever gets better. He said to enjoy it while it lasts because guys actually miss it as time goes on. It was always the ride up and then that dreaded walk to the door. Once my head was outside, things just clicked into place and I realized I was where I belonged. Hartford, CT

If you're looking to try multiple DZ's, then you should also consider The Ranch. It should be about a 2 hr drive from Hartford. Life is too short to drink cheap beer.
