Order of canopies....

Recommended Posts

What do ya'll think a textbook type of canopy progression would look like?
For example:
Lazer
Tri
PD
Esprit
Sabre 2
XF 2
Katana
FX
VX
Not really in that order, that's just an example. Doesn't have to go Icarus route either. Just curious as to what people think.

Navigator 0.75 --> 0.95
Safire 2/Lotus/Fusion 1.0 --> 1.2
Nitro/Nitron/Samurai 1.3 --> 1.4
Crossfire 2/Katana 1.5 --> 1.8
(insert favorite x-brace here) >1.8

something like that IMHO :)

Notice the absence of the Sabre2... :P bleh :P

skybarge 300 ----> xbraced sub 100 in 20 jumps, that should be pretty good.:S just kidding

my thought process is that there is no text book canopy progression because people are not text book. some do and learn things quicker/slower than others, the feel of a canopy can be totally different depending on the person even if it's the same exact canopy. plus, a persons canopy goals are different for everyone, some want to survive freefall, some want to explore canopy flight to the fullest, just depends on what the person wants.

however, i guess we can generalize. start with a big square canopy, after this it's anybodies guess on what would be text book.

Velocity 120

You and I are roughly the same size and I'm on a Velo 103 right now. In otherwords, don't go for too big of a cross-braced canopy when you're to go cross-braced. These canopies are meant to be loaded fairly high.

not what mine was ;)

nav 260 - 10 jumps
nav 220 - 10 jumps
sabre 210 - 18 jumps
sabre 190 - 2 jumps
safire 179 - 200 jumps (measures like a PD 162)
pilot 150 - 20 Jumps
broken leg (learned lesson about rushing things Read Brian Germaines book while laid up in bed for three months like 5 times)
sabre2 170 - 250 jumps (From march to June of this year)
Sabre12 150 - 40 jumps

And I will stick to my current canopy for at least another 200-300 jumps as of right now, I am working on being really consistant with this canopy and putting it where I want to hanging away from traffic and swooping longer.

Cheers and blues...

I'm counting two, maybe three people that read your post, as opposed to just giving their own canopy progressions :P.

For what it's worth, my (inexperienced) thoughts:

- Start on student canopies (Manta etc.)
- A couple of hundred jumps on a Spectre/Tri/Sabre2/Pilot/Safire2 at about 1.0
- Many hundreds of jumps on various sizes of Safire2/Sabre2/Nitro/etc to get to 1.5 wingloading or a 120 size.
- Crossfire2 or Katana for as long as it takes.
- FX/VX/Velo if and when you're ready.

Thoughts?

ok so i didnt read the post. this is MY progression.

i dont think there is a text book progression, everyone is different. this would have been text book progression for me.

depends on your dicipline, and what you want to "progress to".

Ahh so Mark, you think that a textbook progression (after all that was the original question) should include old technology canopies? [:/]

IMO (once off student canopies):
  • Lightly loaded Sabre2 category canopy (1.0 or less no smaller than a 170 to begin).

  • Gradually step up the loading over time by descreasing size until the loading gets to around the 1.6 area staying in the Sabre2 category canopy

  • Katana category canopy at the same loading as the last Sabre2 category canopy

  • Gradually step down and increase loading until loads are approximately 2.0
  • Velocity category canopy thereafter

  • There are no hard or fast jump numbers to put the progression to, but there are definitely minumum jump number/experience categories. I think Brians Germaines (sp?) chart is a good place to start.

    In a 'text book' progression (i.e ideal) the Stiletto, Heatwave, Original Sabre and PD F1-11 range canopies (old or short recovery arc canopies) wouldn't even make the print.

    Blues.
