Its taken me all afternoon, a lot of sweat, some blood, a hell of a lot of cursing and pounding my fists, but i've finally done it - although i doubt its good enough to jump, but atleast i got the damn thing in the bag! Casch 0 #6 January 13, 2003 I started learning how to pack between jumps 4 and 6. Although I had already been watching people pack and had a general idea on how to do it. Don't worry, packing gets much much easier. I've got my pack time down to 15 minutes from 45...I still have a ways to go, but I'm sure once I'm packing smaller canopies it will help. I'm jumping a 290 right now. One thing I find that helps me a TON! is to lay down on the canopy before you start S-folding to squeeze every last bit of O2 out of there. I know most people do this already, but if your having trouble getting it in the bag/container, it might be because you have too much air in the pack job. Mad47 0 #8 January 13, 2003 One thing I have learned when I started to jump with other people is to pack as soon as you get down. Don’t smoke, talk or just relax after jump – PACK!. The reason for that is to avoid the situation when your buddies are already packed and ready for the next load and you are still trying to put this thing into bag in hurry. I thought you had to be able to pack to get your A license. Or was that just a trick cleverly conceived by our DZ to get people to learn how to pack? Seriously, though, I don't trust anyone else to pack for me...even in the Florida heat. However, during summer I try to avoid the hours between 11 and 3. I've been doing this long enough that I can't imagine paying anyone to pack for me, but we have a lot of jumpers these days that don't pack much, if at all. BTW, way back when, after 10 years of rigging, 14 years of jumping, it took me 10 pack jobs on my first ZP canopy to get one I would jump. But I'm picky. I'm old for my age. neiliss 0 #17 January 13, 2003 I have just started learning to pack this weekend. I am hoping to jump my own pack job next weekend or so. I have a packer who I am really satisfied with, however I like to move around to different dropzones, and he is only at one of them most of the time. This becomes restrictive as he is the only person who I will let pack my rig. Hence the need to learn to pack. I started yesterday and I must admit it is really hard. I treat my packer really good, make sure he always has a drink and something to eat. My philosophy is a happy packer results in softer openings. The trick now is to have the confidence to jump your own pack job (hey, you have a reserve!) and to refine your technique. It will get easier! I was a poor college student and in order to pay for my jumps, the DZO taught me how to pack T-10s and PCs.
