I'll get one before my next repack, but I just could not afford to get one when I bought my new rig.

Yes, have never owned one. so the only jumps I have with an AAD were student gear and rental gear, which accounts for around 30 jumps total.

barring a failure, I don't need to make that call for another 3 years.

I was just interested in what people did - along the lines of - if you're fine without it for a month, would you go a few more to save $58? Or is the reinstallation much simpler than I think it is? Or does anyone even go to installing a temp unit in?

Open the reserve container, install the AAD, close and seal the reserve container. No need to repack the reserve. Of course I will only do that if it is my pack job - I won't put my seal on someone else's pack job.

I made 950 jumps without one. Just got my first AAD this week for Rantoul. Made 21 jumps on it so far, less the half day I forgot to turn it on.

First 500 jumps after student status were AAD-less. Then after I quit doing tandems the next almost 200 were AAD-less.

About time to send mine in for service so I'll be jumping AAD-less again until it comes back.

Yep. Mine's off for service. And I train 4way, with verticals and everything. And I've been hammered in freefall with attendant vacant expression.

After getting off student gear, I did the next 500 without one. An AAD will not make you a safer skydiver... and not having one will not make you less safe.

Have one now. I tell ya, its weird having to "turn on my rig"

My cypress is chilling in Germany right now.. hope to see it again soon.

To me, jumping without an AAD is like driving without a seatbelt. I never want to need either safety device, but it is more comforting to know that they are there just in case I really fuck up or someone else really fucks me up.

I did from 1979 until I started doing tandems in 1999. I finally got one on my personal rig in 2005.

I agree with you. I wear my seatbelt every time I'm in a car. But I guess what it boils down to, is that like a seatbelt, an AAD will not necessarily save my life.

Its all in how a person is willing to rationalize the sport.

Yep - have done. Tend to think i will always have one now however as some dz's in the UK are making them compulsory, and i never know where i might be jumping on any given weekend.
