UK peeps - travel insurance...

Recommended Posts

Righto, its time to buy travel insurance again. I used axa for the last year. Needed to make a claim for a hospital trip in the USA august last year and they only finally made the payment about 3 months ago. Wasn't entirely happy with the customer service, but they were the cheapest at the time (still expensive though)

I used to use columbus direct, but they now no longer cover skydiving... however if you go look at their site www.columbusdirect.com you'll notice they use a cartoon image of a skydiver to sell their adventure cover.. go figure :S

So who does everyone use? who is good? who is cheap? I need worldwide cover, anual multi trip etc...

thanks in advamce

Gary McGuiness was putting together a list of insurers, and I think he was trying to get it onto the bpa website. Not sure if it's there, but try him if you don't get any helpful responses here.

Hey there

I have an annual policy with http://www.axatravel.co.uk purchased with optional "Hazardous Activities" cover - which includes skydiving. Also, I can vouch for it!

I broke my leg bad Skydiving in Spain a year ago .. and after a couple of days in the local hospital they rescued me and brought me back to the UK because *THEY* weren't happy with the care I was getting in Spain. They paid all my girlfriends expenses to come out and be with me and her return flights. They sent a kick-ass no-nonsense nurse/wonder-woman out to sort everything out with respect the journey home. Incredible service largely because they outsource their emergency medical rescue stuff to a specialised company called Cega who were and I presume still are awesome.

Well there you go.

regards

James

I think I dated her once...

I'm interested in this thread, as I've been having the same thoughts, and my snowboarding/skiing insurance ran out...

What sort of money are we talking?

I've heard loads of good stories about AXA in the past. Maybe your case was an exception - at least they paid out :o

For those taking an annual policy with AXA, you must do this online a good 10 days in advance of leaving on your first trip. If you wait until the last minute, you need to phone them up and they charge you a higher non-online rate.

Had a tip at the weekend that Endsleigh were covering skydiving again. The guy I was speaking to said he got world wide annual for £65 with no limits on number or type of jumps... which would be too good to be true assuming he's right. As I said it's second hand info though so you'll have to check it out.

When Adam had his accident in the states last year he was insured with AXA and I have nothing but good things to say about them from the moment I called them to make the claim until they paid out. From that experience, I'd highly recommend them.

thanks all for the input.

I'll have a shop around, as i said before, after the absolute sham of a fiasco last time, i'm a little hesitant to go with AXA as quite frankly they were shite! :)

Likewise.

I cunningly forgot that my travel insurance (work benefit) specifically didn't cover skydiving until it was almost too late, but got online to Endsleigh and it was sorted in under five minutes. And you can use the email confirmation as a record of insurance.

You should very quickly get that checked out.

Columbus used to be great for skydiving, covered everything and were always the cheapest. Then they limited you to 2 skydives per trip (useless).. then it became parahuting.

I got them to define parachuting last time and was told it was a static line, or where no free fall was involved. If there was free fall, you weren't covered.

When i asked yesterday the girl on the phone had no idea and said it was related to para gliding and parasending (sp?). I questioned it and said you did need to 'parachute' on a skydive otherwise you only tend to make one. She said she wasn't sure of the definition, but was absolutely sure and made it very clear, there was a big cross next to skydiving. Didn't get a chance to try again today...

You should really check with them, from my understanding, you may not be covered. :o

I had a similar problem a last year. For years I'd used Snow Card (Activity Card) for all of my sport/travel insurance (paragliding, skydiving, climbing and snow sports) Then they decided that Paragliding was too risky (for them!) but skydiving was O.K. It turns out that there have been a large number of big claims in paragliding which pushed premiums up and the out of scope altogether:(

The problem then is that when talking to the uninitiated as soon as you mention para-anything they get all defensive.

you should try getting insurance for BASE.

Every company I have spoken to (and today I called all the ones in this thread) and although "parachuting" is listed, there is a specific named exclusion for BASE on each one.........

There used to be a few companies that did it, but now its like rocking horse shit..........

you can get insurance from anyone for an untrained numptie to slap on some skis and hurtle down a mountain..........

>:(

I use AXA and found they were great when I broke my leg, paid all my hospital bills no question and even the tunnel time that I'd booked and couldn't use.

The price on a joint policy (worldwide, dangerous sports) is even competitive against some normal policies.

Thanks for the warning Zeemax, I've just spoken to them and you're right .. they say skydiving isn't covered.

Personally I think they'd have a hard time defending that in court, the policy said parachuting was covered and as you pointed out there was a picture of a skydiver on the website.

Skydiving's a branch of parachuting isn't it ? Well I've cancelled now, guess I'll look at AXA.

So is BASE, but what you will find is that in their small print and exclusions it will cover their asses 10 fold if anything other than what they decide parachuting is used for a claim...........

For trips to Europe you can pretty much use a E1-11 to cover you, but other than Europe (especially the states) just be sure you have cover (or do what my friend did, give a false name and do a runner from the hospital) hehehe

If I get injured outside Europe, I got some pretty hard shit to go through to prove I fell down the stairs at my hotel! :P

I got single trip (14 days) travel insurance to portugal at Christmas from Marks and Spencers for £28.45 including tax.

It's a pretty good policy, lots of benefits/inclusions and good cover. The skydiving is as far as I can make out and from my discussions with them pretty much unrestricted.

You can contact them on 0800 068 3918

Endsleigh worked well for me, were cheap and from what i remember, had no exclusions on number of jumps etc etc.

Just remember, this will probably not cover your gear, only hospitalisation and repatriation etc - you will probably have to look at separate home contents insurance to have your rig and so forth covered.
