More sacrifices to the 2nd Amendment

First, a confession: I have not been following this thread because I got over debating the 2nd Amendment on Usenet way back in college....

I like that Rolf guy, the gun shop owner at the end. Swiss and German guns are the most interesting.

The Swiss believe that government works and works for them. That rules and democracy go hand in hand. Too many Americans don't.

The Swiss believe that mental health, social services should be well funded. Income inequality in Switzerland is the same today as it was 100 years ago.

In the US FOX has persuaded the poor and the uneducated that they need republicans to make life better and put a gun in their hands for self defense. That guns are necessary because the government doesn't work. That gun laws can't be trusted or passed because...well...everyone needs a gun and its a right.

And there wasn’t a moon landing, life begins at the moment you buy them a drink at the bar, and there ain’t no them’s, they’s or all them all’s.

Bill’s “Merry Christmas” message was a touch more cheery…..just sayin ;)

Won't be very cheery for the victims' families, or those who are merely injured.

On an average day 327 people are shot in the United States. Among those:

117 people are shot and killed

210 survive gunshot injuries

90 are intentionally shot by someone else and survive

46 are murdered

67 die from gun suicide

10 survive an attempted gun suicide

1 is killed unintentionally

90 are shot unintentionally and survive

2 are killed by legal intervention*

4 are shot by legal intervention and survive

1 died but the intent was unknown

12 are shot and survive but the intent was unknown

And the cost of that gun violence is staggering, yet we refuse to address that in any way while claiming ‘personal responsibility’ as a tenant of America

it’s just the ‘cost of freedom’

other than the hundreds of people whose freedom is directly impacted and negated because they got shot….

It's a matter of balancing costs. Is the cost of all those lives, along with the large number of suicides facilitated by guns, worth it for the small number of people who are legitimately saved by guns? Probably is to those people, but dang.

We don't do a good job of evaluating human cost as a society. We scream at the thought of unsafe construction methods, but also scream at the cost of buildings, and of having enough housing for everyone.

There's no clear answer, because any clear answer values someone at someone else's expense, thereby confirming Orwell's mantra of "some animals are more equal than others."

Considering the number of dead and injured annually. Which will exceed the number killed and injured in Gaza this year. Its more likely to be a steel toed boot than a thumb.

Palestinians should behave in their cages. You'd think by now they would have learned that.

Israel should stop their foo, or electricity, or water, or homes, or ....

The 2 State plan is insane, and both sides are at fault.

What more can be said?

Pinellas County Sheriff's Office

CNN —

A 14-year-old has been charged with murder after being accused of fatally shooting his older sister on Christmas Eve during a family dispute over gifts, Tampa Bay area authorities say.

His 15-year-old brother has also been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shot the younger brother in retaliation for the shooting of their sister, Abrielle Baldwin, 23, the Sheriff’s office of Pinellas County, Florida, announced.

The dispute began when the siblings, along with their mother and Baldwin’s two children, were shopping for presents on Christmas Eve and began arguing because the 15-year-old felt his brother was getting more gifts, Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said during a press conference Tuesday.

Well a bit more to put Florida in context:

"According to Gualtieri(the Sheriff), minors have been obtaining guns through car burglaries or by purchasing inexpensive stolen weapons on the street.

"In the last thirty days, we’ve taken reports where seventeen guns have been stolen from unlocked cars," Gualtieri said.

According to people interviewed by the sheriff's department, the teen brothers carried guns on them "all the time," Gualtieri said.

"This is what happens when you've got young delinquents that carry guns – they get upset, they don't know how to handle stuff so they just take out their guns and start shooting each other and one of them kills his sister," Gualtieri said."

So both minors never got the guns from parents. They had been both carrying the guns on them for a while. The sheriff's spokesman is obviously wrong in stating that "young delinquents" are the only problem in Florida's gun loving culture.

Clearly the lesson here is that Abrielle should have had a weapon as well, so she could Stand Her Ground.  That way all three would be dead and no one would receive an unfair proportion of Christmas gifts.

It's about damn time toddlers started carrying.

Local authorities and politicians won't protect them, their parents send them into deadly school environments every day! Good to see them defending themselves.

Dang tootin', as our lost gun loving compadre BillE might say, until every kid is armed no one will be safe. Or as ol' Ron said once the crossfire in his church would be crazy if anyone pulled a gun. Yep, and yes he said that, and he was right! Until school shooters start fearing the crossfire in art class or recess from armed and ready kids (their CS teachers won't carry) the carnage will never stop. We need a national "Rittenhouse" law where you are required to be armed at every age and are held liable if you don't immediately assault whenever you suspect you can be of help.

For many kids the Ruger 10/22 was their first rifle. This is same rifle, just different looks.

Do think it is tacky.

But it only comes with a 10 round magazine, surely not enough to defend a child against 30-50 feral hogs (or even 11 bullies.)  Hopefully aftermarket sources will rectify this glaring defect in the offering.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds posted on X at 11:35 a.m., “Our hearts are broken by this senseless tragedy. Our prayers are with the students, teachers & families of the Perry Community.”

Sensible gun laws would work far better than after-the-fact prayers.

There are a variety of .22LR rifles that come in a 'tactical' package. AR look alike are common, as are MP5, AK, and others.

There's also a decent market for 'dress up' kits for the 10/22. All sorts of different styles can be found.

Silly and fairly stupid, but it's pretty amazing how well 'Silly & Stupid' sells.

Do you mean like conservative trump fans that paid over $4.6 million for his latest batch of "digital trading cards"?
