The outcry (from people on the right, too) if he were to be deposed for someone more to the liking of people on the right would be pretty incredible. I think the Russians would be pleased. Best is for his to select a good VP candidate, and make it clear he's a placeholder, a la Gerald Ford. Who didn't really want to be a placeholder (since he did run again), but was.
