Religious hatred is alive and well

Recommended Posts

It's way more about people using religious belief to confirm and enforce their views of a world where their opinions are the accepted norm, and it's OK to actively put down differing ones.

Religion is a great tool for that. It's not supposed to be its purpose, but hey -- clubbers gotta club.

Well, it didn't exactly "pass".

It moved forward one more step.

Remember "I'm just a Bill" from Schoolhouse Rock?

And for those who call it "religious freedom", when it's just a legal validation for discrimination, Georgia had a similar proposal. It never made it out of committee last year, but it's sponsors plan to bring it back.

An opponent made them "put their money where their mouth was" by attempting to add an amendment that would ensure this law didn't remove any protections from discrimination.

The "religious freedom" crowd claimed that anything like that would render their law useless. Kinda shows what they really want.

Freedom to discriminate.

And BTW, churches and clergy and religious organizations have a lot of leeway when it comes to that sort of thing. They aren't the ones who need this sort of law.
Any church can choose who it does and doesn't want to marry or admit as a member. So the idea that "churches are being forced to marry gay couples" is blatantly false. Despite being repeated over and over.

Protection for haters passed in Missouri...errr Misery.

I'm in favor of a "Mein Kampf" clause regarding religion.

In Germany, National Socialism is heavily proscribed. Given the excesses that have resulted in the past, this makes a certain amount of sense.

What I propose is that any 'religious' text that condones such things as, say, genocide should not be granted First Amendment protection. Since no truly 'holy' document could possibly support such universally abhorrent practices, this should find acceptance among all decent people.

Fair enough?

I have to laugh at the "need" to have codified protections for religious establishments not to perform certain weddings against which they disagree. Can't believe people still believe this tripe, that the government was going to FORCE churches to perform same-sex weddings! :S

No one "forces" religious establishments to perform any ceremonies that do not conform to that church's doctrine. It's like saying the government is going to start forcing the Mormon church to allow non-Mormons (or members of the church who otherwise do not meet the strict code of purity) to enter the temple. And allow them to be MARRIED in the temple.

That's never going to happen. No one is going to sue a church over not being allowed to have their ceremony there. So why do any of the protections outlined in this bill even need to be considered? They've all just wasted their time -- and illustrated that none of these lawmakers really know this most basic point of Constitutional law.

The law is un-needed, and likely against some constitution or other. But no matter. The elected pols get to stand up and pander to their constituents. That's the real point. It's just to let the people know where their representatives stand. Another example of leaders being followers.

You can make an argument that this is what they should do. Of the people and by the people.

it aligns with the abortion debate. First it is legalized by the Supreme Court, then the states do everything they can to block it using TRAP laws. As John Oliver said, abortion is becoming only 'theoretically legal but practically inaccessible' due to these laws.

This type of anti-gay religious law is and WILL REMAIN a tool by the states, for decades to come to restrict something that the Supreme Court of the country has OK'd and therefore made Constitutional.

If you people think this law will not pass, or this law is dead in committee, well there will be another 1000 laws behind it, all across the country, as the religious idiots that want to run this country get their way and continue to pass and attempt to pass legislation that accomplishes their narrow-minded fucking idiotic doctrine.

beware folks, this is the country we live in and these are the bigots and haters we elected. And folks like Donald Trump are part of what comes out of this hatred.

This is only the tip of the iceberg and will continue as long as we continue to put extremists in power, thinking somehow we are supporting an 'ideology'.

In Canada we settled abortion laws completely in 1988. Our SC threw out the existing law and it was never replaced. Our government does not get between doctors and patients.

In 2005 marriage for same sex couples became recognized here. We don't have bakery fights as far as I know.

We have now got the 25,000 Syrian refugees here, and we are working on more.

We abolished the death penalty in the '76, the last execution was in '62.

We welcomed Americans objecting to the Vietnam war long before America acknowledged it's great mistake.

We could plainly see that the WMD excuse for invading Iraq was complete bullshit and refused to get involved.

We have guns here, but we don't worship them.

ect, ect.....

In Canada we love our neighbors to the south. The way a family accepts it's slightly dysfunctional members. Sometimes we shake our heads in wonder at the madness, sometimes we look in admiration.

You could always come back TK, I hear the weather is going to warm up a little soon!

Oh, and did I mention single payer universal health care? Yup that too.

God keep our land, glorious and free, Oh Canada we stand on guard for thee

sounds a lot like how the left attacks the right to bear arms

funny how politicians and fanatics on all sides don't respect the intent and spirit of the law

In both cases - they think they are saving lives and want to remove rights for their so-called 'noble cause'

nothing is more dangerous to the rule of law than true believers with Machiavellian bias

And we love our little brother to the north.
you know the one - he's fresh into his sophomore year in college and has had alot of indoctrination fed to him and he's into it because it sounds so neat - and no real world experience into how things really work. You humor him, encourage him, and watch him slowly grow up into the cool person he'll be. You protect him and bail him out on occasion - and ignore it when he's mean or dismissive to you because that's what big brothers do for family.

But despite any differences, don't fuck with either one - because when they stand together they are freaking formidable

And the little brother loves Joe, his big American brother. He gets disillusioned sometimes with Joe because he's gotten so fat and never bothered to finish college - that's because, according to Joe, he's no "ivory tower elitist" and he "does honest work; you wouldn't know about that." And all his drinking and playing with guns makes his little brother worry that Joe is going to have an accident. And Joe keeps picking fights in bars, and someday that's not going to end well.

And now Joe met a guy, and he's getting interested in him, but little brother is worried that it's not going to end well. That hair and that spray-on tan . . .

But he's always stood by Joe because Joe is his brother. And he knows that someday he may well see Joe on his doorstep needing help, and on that day he's going to take him in without recriminations or lectures about his choices. (Well, maybe a few lectures, but he will still take him in.)

It was the Brits. Long before Canada became what it is today. Oh Canada wasn't written till 1880. Canada became a nation in 1867. Nothing before that event is really Canadian.

Yet little brother visited Joe's big white house earlier today - He doesn't know how Joe does it - "he get's everything despite his incompetence, wtf?" In an act of defiance, little brother - the windbag that he is - flaunts his cultural sophistication by speaking in French, as if that's going to open the way of communication to his oafish big brother Joe. . .

Well, he didn't know how he did it until he saw the mail one morning. Joe has four mortgages, and every time he needs money he just gets another credit card.

Little brother keeps telling him to start paying them off. "Communist!" Joe replies.

Mostly right. He compares:

"Justin Trudeau and his family will be moving into the Rideau Cottage, part of the Rideau Hall complex in Ottawa, because the house at 24 Sussex Dr. is, in effect, falling apart. The official prime minister’s residence, which has not been renovated in half a century, is in dire need of major — and expensive — repairs. Trudeau’s mother, Margaret Trudeau, told the CBC that “24 Sussex is in need — has been in need since I was there 40 years ago — of major infrastructure repair, and it simply hasn’t been done.”...

Ms. Trudeau noted, not a new problem. In 2011, the National Capital Commission estimated the home would require $10 million for repairs deemed urgent by an auditor general’s report — a report that was released in 2008. The decision to put off those overhauls will almost certainly ensure that the cost of repairing the building is higher now."

To the cost in USD of a state dinner at the white house at a million. Gee i could get the pluming working and a new Maytag dishwasher for that much!!
