If you want to compare the gun death rate in Australia for an entire year to the US for a single week . . . go right ahead and do that too.

To suggest gun control will stop ALL gun deaths is silly. Don't even try. There simply are no 100% guarantees. However, to suggest it has no positive effect, well, just follow the numbers and get back to me on it.

It takes a mass shooting in the USA to make the news, because we have come to expect that 30+ of our fellow citizens will be shot dead every day in regular shootings.

In the last week of February alone 17 people were killed in mass shootings in the USA. Those are in addition to the regular shooting deaths.

So this is supposed to prove exactly what, that Australia has the same problem with guns that the US does? That headline is national news in Australia because such events are rare. Every city of any size in the US often puts such news stories on page 3 because it happens almost daily. In any major city a shooting with only one death might not even make the evening news.

The strategy being followed here is called "making the perfect the enemy of the good". It is a favorite of opponents of every effort to regulate anything. "People still die in car accidents? Obviously seat belts and air bags are useless". It is a strategy used by people who think their audience is stupid.
