***Doesn't matter. The President has made a statement that there will be consequences. So we're stuck.

Now we either do something and probably look bad. Or not do anything and look even worse.

Just like Bush with South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Basically there is nothing the US or its allies can do, just like there wasn't in 2008.

Russia has a veto at the UN. It supplies most of Europe with its natural gas. It also has plenty of natural resources. So embargo won't fly, and we certainly aren't going to invade Russia.

Not so Sir, I believe that our PM Mr Cameron has already raised an eyebrow at Mr Putin. Furthermore he is preparing to 'Tut' loudly at the UN (I hear he may even go as far as accompanied eye rolling). If that fails the USA and Uk combined will draw a line in the sand, and if Mr Putin has the temerity to cross it together we will be forced to draw another line in the sand. (Following which we will beg him not to cross it and if he does will he please not cut off our gas as we have sod all military left and no public appetite for any form of confrontation following a decade of vanity wars).

Putin surely deserves a good sound "tut-tutting", but eye-rolling is likely to escalate the situation.

***No-knock invasions must really suck.

What do you understand by the word "invasion"?

Invasion is when troops from one country enter another country. Like Russian troops are doing right now on the Crimean Peninsula. Like they did in Georgia in 08.

Admittedly, like the US did in Iraq in 03.

This whole situation is a lot more complex than the story the news is telling, and Russia does have some valid reasons for doing it. Some of which use justifications provided by the US.
And Russia has some pretty good reasons to be angry with Western Europe, NATO and the US. There have been promises broken and actions that are clearly seen as threats by Russia.

Nerdgirl posted this on FB. There's a lot of the background and lead-up to this that isn't being told in the mass-market media stories.

The U.S. has sent to Kiev 26.02.2014 additional contingent of Marines.
Guard the embassy and U.S. citizens.
You call this an invasion?

Considering they are station on "US soil" and not around the airport on Ukranian soil, I would call this an apples and oranges comparison.

No. By international law, the embassy is US sovereign territory. Having US troops there wouldn't constitute and invasion.

By the same token, if Russian troops were only guarding the sailors and citizens at the Naval base in Sevastapol, then it wouldn't be an invasion. The base isn't sovereign Russian territory, but they have a legitimate presence there and the right to defend it.
But the Russian troops are occupying a much larger area.

not true
As weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

Well, it is if we make the absolutely crazy assumption that the troops who are not wearing any insignia or identifying marks, but moving around in vehicles with Russian license plates are Russian.

So Simferopol is part of the naval base at Sevastapol.

Admittedly, there is a lot of confusion. It's not clear if these are actual Russian troops, or simply pro-Russian Ukrainians.

But most of the indications are that it either is or will be Russian troops on the ground, outside of the Sevastapol Naval base.

It is remarkably similar to the Georgian invasion in 08.

Did you read the article I linked. It's in interesting overview on the whole situation. Far more on the events leading up to it, going back to the breakup of the USSR.

Oops. forgot to include the link about the troops in Simferopol.

Did you see them?
Or seen as a test tube with a poisonous substance in the hands of Colin Powell and photo factories producing toxic substances?

No, I did not see Colin Powell in Ukraine, but I think you may have gone off the deep end.

Colin Powell was used as a puppet and the US invaded Iraq under false pretense.

Those facts don't take away that Russia has invaded Crimea though.

In the largest centers of Ukraine Kharkov, Donetsk, Odessa, Kherson citizens drive the nationalists who have seized power.
There are no Russian military bases. Probably therefore these facts aren't interesting to your politicians. The external enemy is necessary.

***Russia never left the Crimea.
You yet didn't understand this simple fact?

Oh ok, business as usual then.

Russia must be worried having troops without insignia all over their own neighbourhood then? Are certainly concerned.
For these purposes the president got Federation Council approval.

So it is Russian property. Russian soldiers are there, but it isn't an invasion. There are unidentified troops, welcomed by the pro-russian factions, that Russia is very worried about.

You are going to have a fine future as information minister.

***As stated earlier A rookie mistake by Obams (his comments)

There is effectively nothing America can do.

What do you think Obama should have done?

STFU and Stop throwing stones in a green house... but I guess he knows what a proper invasion is :S

Really?

Most of the western world has condemned the actions of the Russians in Ukraine. You think nobody should have spoken up, or just Obama should have remained quiet?
