I'm having a hard time blaming the Koch brothers for this. My issue is, I don't know whom to pin this one on.

Seriously. This is pretty fucked up.

They're doing "god's work" via the Texas Board of Education and its revisions of textbooks.

We're essentially heading back into the dark ages with some of these folks.

If you read the full report the Americans placed near the top of the poll on most questions (South Korea was the only one that was consistently higher, I believe).

This is true for all but two questions, one about the big bang and one about the evolution. Even here, if you slightly altered these questions and asked about what "astronomers" or "biologists" believed the American scores went up considerably, indicating that Americans were familiar with the theories of the big bang and evolution.

Here is a better analysis that puts the results into context much better: http://guardianlv.com/2014/02/sun-revolves-around-earth-according-to-one-in-four-americans/

People are starting to take pride in being ignorant. It's the same as the people who smile when they say "Oh I don't know how to use a computer". That's like not knowing how to cook yourself a meal: it's not cute, it's pathetic and you should be ashamed.

Further, just like the computer analogy wherein everyone around them has to pull their weight, those of us on the right side of the bell curve have to work that much harder to compensate for the scientifically retarded segment of the population.

Frankly I think that the educational system needs a bit of a revamp, because there's no way someone who thinks the sun goes around the earth or can't reliably differentiate between know/no, your/yore/you're, their/there/they're should be allowed to graduate from high school in the US/UK/AU, LET ALONE a fucking university. That's not even touching on the math side of things… B|

>Seriously.This is pretty fucked up.

It is very fucked up,but it doesn't surprise me since the public education bar has been lowered for more than a couple of decades in the US.No child left behind, everyone is a winner.
I have met several people in recent years, who were HS graduates, who did not know about the electromagnetic field on earth, or about true north and magnetic north along with the lack of other common scientific knowledge.
There are those who would have us believe that public education is doing better than ever here in the US,but compared to most other developed countries it's a joke.
The older people who lack common knowledge are simply lazy and ignorant, and it seems it is not uncommon for these people to become elected public officials nowdays.

Didn't you mean to say they're for one of your there(s), or did you really want to say "there there". It's all too messed up if you ask me as we interpret two or more ways to skin a cat. LOL

Somehow I don't think they're ironically using Einstein's frames of reference.

Haha yes, good catch. Fairly ironic that I'd flub that in the post, but thank you for pointing it out so I can fix it.

[Reply]People are starting to take pride in being ignorant.

Kinda like all the people who have no idea whether there's a core demographic who doesn't know this answer, but are proud of themselves for blaming religious fundamentalists.

There's plenty of ignorance to go around. So much so that we have no idea who the fuck doesn't know the answers, but boy are we all apt to act like we do. All the better to bask in our own ignorance to laugh at others.

I'm not blaming you, grue. You lot in Australia have a tought enough time just hanging on to the earth so you don't fall off, it being upside down and all.

Oh there's plenty I'm ignorant about, but I'm proud of none of it.

So, 75% of Americans don't know that the sun revolves around the Earth? That's pretty concerning. I wonder how they think we keep from flying off the Earth.
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

Agreed. Revisionist history is bad in all cases.
