Dad's texting to daughter sparks argument, fatal shooting in movie theater

If you live in an area where people are using their phones during movies in theater, why not just carry a portable mobile phone jammer?

Well if we're talking about violating laws, sure. You could do that.

Even fairly easy to construct one at home.

Exactly why some of us have quite an impressive home theater.

While we do go out to movies on occasion, I MUCH prefer my home theater over having to tolerate rude motherfuckers.
They're everywhere.
>:(

plus the pause button and bathroom and scotch selection is better.

In SF at Japantown is a theater that converted one theater's balcony to an adult seating area with pairs of seats separating by end tables. They sell real food, along with bottles of wine and 22s of good beer. And charge a few more bucks - closer to $15 per seat (you reserve the precise location when you book the tickets). Seems to filter out a lot of the assholes, makes it a much more pleasant experience.

We went to a Disney theater not too long ago down in the tourist trap part of town.

The only tickets available were the dining option.
The fat slob family near us had children that couldn't behave, but dad sure could order every sugary option on the menu to keep them occupied while he ignored them.
The rest of us around them weren't so lucky.
I don't think I'll go for that option next time.

Don't know about the US but in NZ and Australia there seems to be a bit of a resurgence of little independently owned cinemas - infinitely preferable to the big chains.

Funny, I read this and was about to say that there is a great theater near us that serves decent food, and pitchers of beer. There are usually no kids in the eating/drinking area. Then it occurred to me that it was the same theater that the above shooting took place in :|

So when it's a school we get outraged, but when just one guy it's ok to make jokes about it, huh? Classy, guys. Real classy. :( The guys was SHOT for being annoying. By an ex cop, no less.

If either of the men involved had the kind of sense to find humor in this incident when reading about it then none of us would be reading about it.

***I don't think, even at it's most villainous, popcorn can be considered a deadly weapon.

Butter can be a heart stopper:P

Actually, it can do more than that to you:

As far as the shooting goes. It's indefensible. Old Fool w/a gun... He was a former Police Chief. Yet, he couldn't de-escalate a simple confrontation like this?? Sure sounds like he intentionally took a life. Hope they don't go soft on him because he's old. Throw him in Prison for life. That's second degree murder. Ex-POs are not allowed to murder people. No matter how insecure they happen to be feeling on any given day...

If people insist on owning and carrying guns then it should require full on psychological evaluations every couple of months, because shit like this is insane.

If more people were shot in theatres for being annoying, I bet theatres would become much more pleasurable in a short span of time.

I wonder how much time lapsed between him pulling his firearm and taking the shot, being the wife had time to react to try to stop the shot.

If my life was really in danger and I had to use a firearm, it's pull out and shoot now. The case of a highly trained officer that knows how to really shoot to save his life, I'd imagine the wife would have no time to react.

Was the texter really a deadly threat being there wasn't a fight for your life struggle? It's not like the texter was on the ground choking the shooter and the shooter shot him on the ground. Sounds like they were standing, not being a deadly threat.

Maybe in Florida you can waste someone for punching you, I'm not sure.

I have a similar theory. I would like to bring back dueling.

If the guy behind the counter is rude, you throw your card down and demand satisfaction. If you've never tried it, slap someone with a glove. It's delightfully satisfying.

I think if people knew you could call them out so easily, there would be more courtesy. Kind of like the old west. You tipped your hat to a lady and left your gun in the holster lest twenty other cowboys use you for target practice.
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

Research is trending in the pro butter direction. The artificial stuff and sugar is the problem.

This morning's news reports a female who was harassed for texting in this theater by C. Reeves a short time ago. She also stated that after admonishing her he followed her to the rest room. Hmmm....

My wife and I plan to see Lone Survivor tomorrow afternoon. I plan to keep my phone turned off and my gun holstered. Of course, circumstances may require a change of plans.

How about: "Anyone too afraid to make a skydive without an AAD should have their skydiving license taken away." Sound good to you?

If you have a CWP in FL, isn't it illegal to carry concealed at this theater?
;)

According to the news story the theatre prohibits weapons, so it is probably a violation of their company policy, but that doesn't make it a violation of state law. All the theatre can do is ask you to leave, and if you don't, have you arrested for trespass. At any rate, that covers them legally in this incident. When someone sues them for not keeping the armed nut out, they can just say; "Hey, we prohibit weapons and he brought one in anyway!" What else can they do - have everyone scanned by metal detectors like at the airport? Heck, I don't want to do that when I go see a movie.

This is the information I was given when I received my FL CWP.

Quote

(12)  No license issued pursuant to this section shall authorize any person to carry a concealed weapon or firearm into any place of nuisance as defined in s. 823.05; any police, sheriff, or highway patrol station; any detention facility, prison, or jail; any courthouse; any courtroom, except that nothing in this section would preclude a judge from carrying a concealed weapon or determining who will carry a concealed weapon in his or her courtroom; any polling place; any meeting of the governing body of a county, public school district, municipality, or special district; any meeting of the Legislature or a committee thereof; any school, college, or professional athletic event not related to firearms; any school administration building; any portion of an establishment licensed to dispense alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises, which portion of the establishment is primarily devoted to such purpose; any elementary or secondary school facility; any career center; any college or university facility unless the licensee is a registered student, employee, or faculty member of such college or university and the weapon is a stun gun or nonlethal electric weapon or device designed solely for defensive purposes and the weapon does not fire a dart or projectile; inside the passenger terminal and sterile area of any airport, provided that no person shall be prohibited from carrying any legal firearm into the terminal, which firearm is encased for shipment for purposes of checking such firearm as baggage to be lawfully transported on any aircraft; or any place where the carrying of firearms is prohibited by federal law. Any person who willfully violates any provision of this subsection commits a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

As I interpret this, movie theaters are permitted. We need Andy9o8 to weigh in here.

However, I'm in GA now. Everyone I know that has a CWP carries everywhere, regardless.

I was lead to believe they serve alcohol here.

Yep, I think the serving of alcohol adds a stipulation to the theater in question.
