Food Deserts?

Recommended Posts

ok - so people hunt chocolate moose - now it fits in speakers corner.

Back to the subject on hand - I find it very difficult as a visitor to the US to find grocery stores. Walmart is everywhere but really their quality (of food) sucks. In Texas we found a pharmacy chain that stocked quality food, which was a surprise and not where we expected to find groceries. Coming from the UK where we have Tesco, Asda, Sainsburies, Marks and Spencers, Morrisons all big supermarket chains within 5 miles of home it does feel like a "desert" when in the US.

I think the request for a program like this is premature. Before they throw money at it; especially if it looks to morph into another ongoing or permanent program; they need to really get to the bottom of why the established businesses aren't willing to open outlets there.

Most likely the answer is that it is not profitable. Then you ask why again. Keep asking why until you get to the core problem. For some reason, that doesn't seem to be the way our government solves problems - much easier, and more popular, to simply throw money at it than to ask the tough questions and demand honest answers.

>NATIONALIZE RESTAURANTS?

Nationalize? Heck, I distinctly heard someone say "socialism!" Maybe even "Sharia law."

DON'T LET OBAMA BRING SHARIA LAW TO SAFEWAY!

Why are you against that, Bill?
Goes against your partyy lines, no?

OH - it was sarcasm . . . Gotcha!

1000 calories of fast food costs about 3 bucks (two mcdonalds double cheese burgers).

3 bucks can buy me 1 can of tomato sauce, 1/2 lb pork sausage, and 1lb pasta. Were I to invest 20min of my time, I could turn that into dinner that is much healthier and has more nutritional value for $3.

it's hard to eat healthy when you're poor and lazy.

pork, tomatoes, and pasta is an improvement on a double cheeseburger, but it's hardly a well rounded meal. No greens, you have processed carbs, and a fatty variety of red meat. Typically sugar in that tomato sauce, too.

don't know what kind of tomato sauce you buy, but the stuff I buy doesn't contain anything but tomatoes, salt, garlic and preservatives.

it's also about 1700cal of food. so for another $3 add some salad, upgrade to extra-lean beef, toss in some onion and garlic, and for about $6 I can feed two people about 1000cal each.

I know you'll nit-pick something. That's fine, it's a web forum. It's what happens here. But my point is that it IS possible to eat well cheaply as long as you're not lazy.

as cheaply as McDonald's? Probably not.

Here that meal would be $1 for the pasta on sale, $2 or $2.50 for the sauce on sale, and ~$2 for the sausage. Then $2 for the greens. It's also one of the cheapest meals you can do - and not so great 14 times a week.

Chef Boy R Dee is the really cheap version of it, too.

you didn't read too closely. I didn't say buy pre-made pasta sauce. I said buy a can of tomato sauce. Don't be lazy. Hell, the name brand at my store are 3/$1. A Head of lettuce is about a dollar, lean beef is $3/lb pre-ground. 1lb box of name-brand pasta is $1.29, an onion is about $0.40, for $6 I can feed 3-4 people.

and chef boy r dee is the really bad for you version too. you can eat well (healthy, not 5-star) for a few dollars per meal IF YOU'RE NOT LAZY! Dinner from a can is lazy.

you want cheap meals, you have a little meat, lots of starches or veggies. You have a lot of tools to choose from.

about 20% of your calories should come from protein, 20% from fat (that's the hard one to keep down) and the rest from carbs.

Nobody ever taught you how to do it. I get that. It's fine. My point still stands. If you're lazy, or don't know how to put together a healthy meal on the cheap, you think that McD's is a cheap meal. (your insistence that you can't eat cheaper than McD's is illustration of my point.)

This is one of those things that people don't teach their kids anymore. Kids don't take home-ec anymore because there's too much pressure to take honors classes to get college scholarships. Parents don't teach this to their kids, because they're too busy running them to after school activities to "pad their resumes" for college applications and scholarship apps. Either that or because the parents never learned it and we have a second-order problem.

I used to be right there with you. "Fast food is cheap and easy, and you can't eat that cheaply at home..." or so I thought when I didn't NEED to be on a budget. Now when forced to be on budget, and keeping health a priority, I know it's not true. I can feed my family of 4 a quite tasty, fairly healthy meal for under $10 (total) at home.

Urban hunting! My sister lives in heavily populated area off of Manchester Rd in St. Louis West County that has a large deer population. They come right up to the porch in the backyard. I've offered to sit back there with a bow. Always willing to do my part!

To be serious, they should also allow sanctioned urban squirrel and rabbit hunting with pellet rifles during open season.

Much of the deer meat harvested during urban hunts are donated to food banks.

Kids don't take home-ec anymore because . . .

Kids don't take or schools don't offer?

Even at when it was offered, when I went to school more than 30 years ago, it simply wasn't something boys took -- ever.

We had to take a 2 week mini course in home-ec while the girls learned how to solder sheet metal. We made pizza, sewed buttons onto cardboard, and a bunch of other stuff I've forgotten.

You're listing Texas prices, not Bay Area ones. I said "here" the prices are X.

It's also much easier to inexpensively feed 4 than 1 on a per person basis.

you're still listing prices for a jar of pasta sauce, not the can of tomato sauce. You're not seriously telling me that a 6oz can of tomato sauce costs $2.50? Don't be lazy and buy the prepared stuff.

I've shopped in the Bay area. I could feed a family of 4 (cook 4 portions that would keep for a week) there for about $8.

It's also easier to cook for 4 and save 3 portions for leftovers. (thus cooking 3 or 4 times a week if you're single)

But don't let me stop you.... clearly I'm wrong, and you're right. are you sure you're not my wife? :)

ya know... I don't know if it's not offered anymore. When I was in Jr high 25-ish years ago, I had my choice between shop & home-ec. My dad had taught me woodworking for several years (we built much of the furniture we had in the house) so I opted to go to class with the girls and eat, and then sew the next semester. I got a few good dates out of it, so there were some other boys that switched over for sewing semester.

fixing buttons is a useful skill. Have done that more than once on the road before a business meeting.

Eh? Food keeps. Especially if we're talking about meat and tomato based pasta sauce. Make it once and eat it for the best part of a week.

Compared to what you can buy from a decent sized food store, McDonalds is not cheap. It might be cheap for eating out, but it's not cheap eating.
Do you want to have an ideagasm?
