regulator 0 #82 March 6, 2009 So I'm curious (not trying to get banned) but what exactly is a moderator. Is this a 'real' job where you ban people that curse other people out on the forums or do you have other duties as well.
billvon 2,411 #83 March 6, 2009 Moderators here on DZ.com volunteer to moderate the various forums. It's not a 'real' job. We don't get paid. The reason we are here at all is that many of us saw what happened to the original (unmoderated) rec.skydiving group. It started out with a group of maybe 20-30 active posters and maybe 100 people reading. It was a useful group where a lot of information was exchanged. What became the ISP was first discussed there, for example. The reasons that it was successful as an unmoderated group were: 1) There was a pretty high barrier to entry. Even in 1993, not many people knew how to get on Usenet or operate a newsreader. Thus the people who were able to get on were generally pretty smart and wanted a discussion forum instead of a place to call each other names or tell dirty jokes (although there was a bit of that, too.) 2) The Internet was not yet much of a market, so there wasn't much spam. 3) The community was small enough that people all knew each other, and thus there was a little less "anonymous flaming." As the group grew, though, people started to spend more and more time calling each other every name in the book. Some posters delighted in finding a useful thread (say, on high performance canopies) and posting "so why don't you suck my dick?" in response to every single post. The spammers eventually found it. It is now a wasteland of porn spam and get rich quick schemes. So when Willem started dropzone.com, he wanted to prevent that from happening. So he asked a few of us to volunteer as moderators. We agreed because we saw the value in rec.skydiving get buried under all that crap, and we thought that value was worth trying to bring back. We set up a few very basic rules (no personal attacks, no commercial advertising, no pedophilia jokes) and went from there. As time went on, groups were added, new moderators were added and rules were refined. Nowadays, in the topical forums, our main job is to keep people on track. People in Incidents often wander onto different topics, and those posts get moved to the appropriate forum (if they're useful) or deleted (if they're not.) People in Speaker's Corner often insult each other. People in Bonfire sometimes post stuff that's just a plain waste of space (pictures of poop.) But the other forums are pretty self-regulating. (And that's probably way more than you wanted to know about the history of this place and what we do.)
jtnesbitt 0 #84 March 6, 2009 A moderator is someone that has been nominated to perform the free service on these boards of making sure everything remains civil. It is up to the moderators descresion as to what is civil and what isn't combined with how they interpret the rules of the forum. nerdgirl 0 #86 March 6, 2009 Is "fastest" the best? Optimal? Or most effective? I can think of a number of things that can be done fast, but have better and more preferable outcomes if speed is not the sole metric. Andrewwhyte 1 #95 March 6, 2009 Quote I dont necessarily blame the people themselves because 90% of gang members come from broken homes with no father figures in their lives so they pair up with an OG that they idolize and do their dirty work for them.
