Newbie question....what's a boogie?

Recommended Posts

It is where a whole bunch of alcoholics and rec. drug users get together, socialise, and collaborate in their skydiving problem!!!
as the old adage goes....my drinking club has a skydiving problem!!!!!:DHA!

Thanks all (except the anonymous jerkass)...what I suspected but wasn't sure. Especially that link to the glossary....you're right skreamer...it's one stop shopping for any info you might need on here. Should have looked around myself and found that, thanks for pointing it out.

Funny you mention this. I was just researching it the other day.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but this is basically my understanding....
Many people stow their lines they use rubber bands that are too loose, or they make their stows too short.
During deployment, as the bag is pulled from the container, the lines all free from their stows simultaneously, and the chute exits the bag and begins inflating. The lines have all "dumped" from their stows, rather than popping out stow-by-stow as they should.
So what you have is a canopy beginning to open (or largely open) before you've even reached line stretch. So you can imagine what awaits you when you reach line strech... **WHAM!**
This is one of the causes of really brutal openings. So the lesson to take from it is:
1. Make sure you use bands of the proper tightness.
2. Make sure your stows are about 2-3 inches long.

a Snivel is the opposite of the effect described above: A snivel is when your parachute opens very slowly. This can be caused by a slider not coming down all the way (in which case you pump the brakes) or it can be caused by other things as well, such as a very old canopy that has become too porous. If your canpoy snivels, don't roll the nose.

everyone... if you jump you should make a huge effort to understand all these terms, how to recognize them, how to prevent them (the bad ones) and how to handle them... seriously. put a practice rig on, and have someone throw the malfunction 8x10 photos over your head... remeber about the 5 seconds you have to make a decision... know what you're looking at and practice until it's instinctual how to react, 3 pulls on the main, cut, pump brakes, kick out, no cut, pull reserve, whichever... and in the air, you won't be sitting still under the image of those malfunction photos, you'll be tossed all over the place...
just a thought,
blew skies,
pull high,
not too high,
don't forget your chest strap,
love your rigger,
tip you packer,
track far far away,
and geek the camera,
ask more questions,
smile :)get a pincheck,
left hand landing pattern,
if you have a double total, track for your rigger

Would somebody please define 'snivel'.

snivel - sni-vel - (verb) 1.What you do to stay on the good loads after you screwed up again. 2.What you do to keep from being the one who gets bumped for the student. 3.What you do to get your hands on the last beer.
See also "whine", "moan", and "whimper"

Skydiving? *strange-look-on-face* I thought Boogies were when people got together after sunset on an airport and drank lots of beer, got naked, rode beacons and tried to "hook-up" (you know, hook up like, dirt diving...:)AggieDave '02

HOLY SHIT !!!
You guys could confuse an eskimo looking for ice! B|
That'll teach you to ask a simple question.
Hold on a minute, let me make sure I got this straight...
I should boogie to my boss and snivel to get out of work, then boogie to the boogie while boogie-ing from that a**hole cop that's boogie-ing after me trying to take jumps away from me, then snivel to get on a plane because I kicked some students ass for bumping me...(breath)...then hope I have a snivel so I don't get a line dump, all because I'm trying to drink and dive.
Oh yeah, and don't forget to hook up if you have time!!!!!
(Duh, which way do I go, which way do I go?%5

Its where you go to hook yourself in under a new smaller canopy that you're demo-ing.
This is a totally inappropriate comment....bording on whuffoism (for lack of a better word). Also, if you're going to make a comment like that, at least have the guts to identify yourself and stand behind your comments.
