Deaths, stuff vs. skydiving!

over the past 38 years the average annual number of deaths by lightning in the U.S. has been 89.

Last year something like 25 people died from skydiving, right?

I thought that was a good comparison.

Anyone have any others they'd like to share?

April Parachutist has the annual fatalities for 2002 listed at 33. Check it out on page 30 - the opinions may be a tad skewed, but the numbers are interesting.

I don't think it's a bad comparison at all, considering the average media-saturated whuffo seems to think that someone dies on about 1 in 10 skydives. It helps put skydiving risk in more of a perspective, even if it's not the best use of statistics.

BTW Dave - congrats on the coach rating. I'm still tweaking my flying skills, but hope to get mine finished up within the next few weeks.

But how many skydivers are struck by lightning each year? :P
I've never heard of a skydiver beeing struck by lightning under canopy, so in a thunderstorm the safest place to be would under canopy, right? Statisticly speaking of course ;)

There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

na na na, Mr. Quade, sir, it's "lies, damn lies, or statistics!?"

Still, an interesting point. Those who point at skydivers as death crazies are ALSO likely the ones who golf - or fish in a metal boat - during a thunderstorm:S.

I bet they don't get the same charge out of their sport (sory for the really baaad pun) as we do !!

Amazingly, 100% of the people surveyed said that, including this one, they had been part of at least one survey!
Sky-div'ing (ski'div'ing) n. A modern sport that involves parties, bragging, sexual excesses, the imbibing of large quantities of beer, and, on rare occasions, parachuting from aircraft.

I think it's a great statistic to hand to whuffos.
We're dealing in emotional impressions, not logic.

I don't understand probability and statistics.
I took 3 courses in college plus a couple in measure
theory and integration which supposedly underlies it.

I think Von Neumann was right - you don't understand
mathematics, you just get used to it.

Three statisticians went duck hunting.

The first one fired straight at the duck and his shot went behind.
The second one led to much and fired ahead of the duck.
The third one put his gun down and said "We got him".
