Do I or Don't I

Recommended Posts

I just received my high School reunion invitation. August 2

And I hated High school.

So do I go and hate it like I hated the 10 year reunion? Hang with the same folks who I hated many years ago and who hadn't changed in the least, still clicque-ish and attitudinal?

The jocks and cheerleaders will congregate, reliving moments they shone - 20 years ago...

The Actors' Club will gather, rehashing any small success they had in high school plays, and waxing rhapsodic, misquoting Shakespeare...

The Stoners will be there, hanging out, drinking at the bar, complaining and still full of teenage angst - at 39...

The Brains will be sitting at a table, discussing the latest in engineering and chemistry, showing off their degrees, hoping that they've outdone each other...

The JROTC will be standing there, trying to wear their old uniforms, bursting their buttons and surreptitiously shining their shoes in the bathroom...

The Future Librarians will have brought the latest books in their purses and briefcases, and discuss plot development and character realization, and what makes a filing system effective...

And will I stand there, wondering what happened, how the years have fled by, how the past is still so present, and seeing who's lost their hair and who's lost their figure; who's gained a family or lost one, who's puffing the truth and who's honest...and be just as isolated as I was in high school. I'll be there, a drink in my hand, chubby and middle aged, and wonder where my life went, and where it's going. Retrospective and introspective, seeing the years etched on my former schoolmate's faces, knowing I wear the same marks...

It calls for semi formal attire - maybe a tie dye shirt, and a rig with a bow on it??? Or do I cave in and buy a fancy dress, knowing I'll wear it once and tuck it away in plastic afterwards? Tennies shoes, or heels that make my feet hurt?

Do I or not?

Ciels-
Michele

Do you care enough about any of them to spend what it's going to cost to go? If not then fuck 'em. Spend that money on jumps instead. B|

My 20 year was last year. I didn't go. Missed the 10 year too. Maybe I'll hit the 25 or 30 year... then again, maybe not.;)

Go.

Wear you DZ.com T-shirt.

Buy one of those mini rig backpacks.

Mention the fact that you now probably have bigger balls than the rest of the class.

I'm looking forward to my 10 year really bad since I'll have my PRO rating and plan on droping in on all those fools that laughed at me years ago  Maybe a well timed swoop to kick a drink on someones face would make the event even more sweet for me :D

As for you Michele... the only purpose that those events have is a bragging arena. Load up with some pic's of you in Freefall and knock their socks off.

What she said. ;)

You are a smart enough person to realise you don't need those people to quantify your life. Most of them were not your friends or even friendly. Like bytch said You can do MUCH better with your money.
Take it from someone who was physically removed from my last day of high school by two sheriffs, who said I'm not allowed to return ever. And then later to have the reunion commitee not leave me alone before my ten year. " If you see me at my high schools reunion............RUN"! Glen

LOL

We skipped the last day, got caught by the sheriffs, taken back to high school and expelled then escorted off school property by the sheriffs dept. this is a true store.

so you all are lucky people

I had a really great time at my 25th college reunion, and a pretty lousy time at the 15th. Your 20th high school is about the same time as the 15th college. A noticeable number of folks still cared about who they were in college.

Another "don't bother" here. Rent "Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion" and watch it at the DZ with your real friends instead. Jumping works, too.

Bomb squad was there too, but there was to be no expulsion. I had way too many credits. If they would have forced me to come back the next year I still would have had enough xtra credits to disrupt and graduate. So a deal was struck ... just stay away and we will mail you your diploma.
My airforce recruiter even did some fast talking with my probation officer and got my charges dropped down from felony to malicious mischief. And everybody hated their recruiter, mine was cool !

If there isn't anyone there that you want to see or spend time with, I'd say don't go. I never went to any of my reunions. I don't regret not going either, the group of friends I did stay in touch with, all went out together and had a great time! It is your choice, but if you don't think you will enjoy yourself, why go?

Go for it, Michele. I attended mine...and it was hilarious. I've only gained 6 pounds the entire time since school and all the guys there were WAY overweight, had no concept of living and some were so out of shape they breathed heavy with no exertion. They had boring stories that I listened to for a while. Then when asked what I was doing, I said that I skydive full time (cause I don't work). That caught the attention of everyone within ear shot and I had a ball telling them how "Ya can't breath in a cloud cause you'll drown" and "if ya' go too fast, you outrun all the oxygen" and "the pointy ends of raindrops will stick ya" and how you could "land on a cloud and it would be considered two skydives" and a whole bunch of other lies...lol. I can't remember ever laughing so hard at a bunch of wuffo's. Now, some people would consider me doing that a bad reflection on skydivers but I thought it was great and I'd do it again if the opportunity presented itself.

you can never step into the same river twice.

enjoy it for what it is, or walk another land. brooding about what is and was not does little to affect what will be.

for what its worth the people who knew me in high school well enough to remember my name still talk to me in one form or another, most of them did not or will not bothering to visit the institutions to which we were confined for the better part of our lives for any reason

I went to my 20 year reunion more out of curiosity than anything. I still live in my home town so it did not require much effort to attend. After the gathering on Firday night I went out and bought a dropdead dress for Sat night just because I could. So many of those who thought they were so wonderful in high school were old, fat, and pitiful. I KNOW I don't look my age so I took advantage of it and had a blast marveiling everyone with my pictures and stories of thing I have done in life. I got to see two people I had lost touch with that I actually missed, therefore, it was worth my time and the small amount of effort I put into it.

All that said if you don't have anyone to specifically go see after all these years and there is nobody you want to rekindle a friendship with then I wouldn't waste my time. Go skydive with the money you would have spent on a new dress.

Hey, Michelle!

My mom is in the exact same situation...except this is her 50th reunion!:o She's never to been to one of 'em yet, as far as I know. But I actually think she's going to this one...one of her classmates called her, had a nice long chat, and I think convinced her to go.

From what you've said, I wouldn't personally put the time and effort into going.

Blue skies,
Karen

I agree that if you don't really have certain people who you want to see again and talk to, then why bother? Spend your money on what you do like to do. Like, take that money and go to the American Boogie in June in Davis instead and meet a whole bunch of new friends who really want to see you. (hint, hint!) ;)

I got my 20th invitation this year also, and I'm not going to go. There's no reason to...my life has moved on, and there's no one I can think of who I feel I am really missing in my life.

If you do go, here are some suggestions:

Smile - a lot - let them wonder why you are smiling

Smile some more - at all the folks that at still full of themselves and only have high school 20 years before to talk about

Smile again - when you show them photos of who you now are. Be sure those photos are of yourself at home, in the air, at work AND of all your friends and family since high school.

Smile at yourself - wear what you are comfortable in and can use again. Unless it is hosted at a restaurant that requires a dress, be clean, neat and comfortable.

Worst case scenario - you don't like being there. So leave and you will never regret it. It may surprise you what little control those old memories really have over you now.

Best case scenario - you enjoy yourself and have a great evening. You will never regret it and you realize what little control those old memories really have over you now.

Let us know what you do and how it goes!
