Gold Coast, you there?

Recommended Posts

Hi Beth, I've tried calling several Gold Coast Jumpers' cell phones and get the same message everytime "Due to the hurricane in the area, your call cannot be completed" or "All circuits are busy now"[:/] Very frustrating!

i've been trying to call some gcs peeps in new orleans, but can't get through. watching the news, you would think that there's nothing between n.o. and mobile. even though gulfport and biloxi got hit the hardest, there has been very little information about them.

My brother lives in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. I just had dinner with him. He, his wife and my neice and nephew took off out of there yesterday evening and arrived in Chattanooga sometime this morning. Hattiesburg was hit very hard, he's been talking to his neighbors and co-workers. He's lost every tree in his yard (thankfully none of them hit the house) but he will get a full report later on tonight. He's thinking about going back in the morning with the family, but who knows if he will be able to get back through.

I just got some updates from my family around the area....

1) two casinos gone, rest have lots of damage
2) Ocean Springs area...flooded, my grandparents and aunts home flooded with up to 2ft of water, both of these homes are built around 12-16 feet above ground.
3) Bridge that connects Biloxi and Ocean Springs is underwater (those familiar with that bridge know its a four lane massive structure close to 50-75 ft off the water on normal days.)
4) I-10 and Hwy 90 underwater, cannot travel from New Orleans to Flordia.

edit to add: 5) several of the plantation homes on the beach front are gone.

all my family down there lives in areas around Moss Point so I can't say how the DZ and folks there are, but I would say IMO at minimum they did get flooded. Lets just hope everybody is ok.

I just heard from my other aunt in Gauiter. Her house is about 300ft from a marina/boat launch. Her house is/was flooded up to the top of the doorways. Pasgagoula did get flooded as well, not as bad, but water has started receding.

Just saw disturbing pictures online...

Pasgagouls...flooding of five feet. The only vehicle you can see is about the top 2ft of a Red Cross box truck

Gulfport...a shrimp boat, broke in half, floating on Hwy 90(Hwy that runs the beach line on the Gulf Coast).

News in Houston (where a lot of NOLA folks came to ride this out) is that I-10 into NOLA is still closed except for emergency personnel.

BUT, hey... y'all get free tickets to the Museum of Natural History while you're here. I think y'all get free tickets to the Comets' playoffs too. We're so hospitable.... ;)

I saw them, didn't tell my wife. We know it's bad there. we planned on going to elsinore this weekend, I just don't know it we're heading west or east on I-10 this weekend. I'm still hoping for west!

I wouldn't plan on using I-10 at all anywhere near the strike zone. It's going to be flooded and/or used by emergency management crews only.

Edit: I just realized you said weekend. I'd still try to swing around I-10 as much as possible. When hurricanes of this maginitude hit it often takes 7-9 days before basic utilities.. such as power and water.. are restored. People will be scrambling quite a bit. If you plan on heading west I'd swing a bit north first.

At this point I still hope I'm heading west! If I head east its not for just the weekend, and I pray we don't need to go that way!
Although, I did enjoy the 2 jumps I made @ Gold Coast and would love to jump there again, I don't want this to be the reason we have to go back. not to mention that if damage is so bad that i need to go there;
1) I'm not going to feel like jumping.
2) GS is in very bad shape and my not be able to put any of us up.
I hope I'm going to Elsinore. If I head east, I-10 being closed will be the least of my worries!

Sprint lost their switch in New Orleans (it's under water), so they are having to route all their traffic to other providers. This means there is a huge lack of capasity to that part of the country and it could be weeks before it's back online.

Just spoke with Mike, the dropzone only lost 1 piece of tin but otherwise came away unscathed (other hangars at the dz are damanged considerably though). Otter is in ATL getting bigger engines put on, was supposed to have the boogie this weekend for the bigger engines but obviously that won't happen.

I am still getting info from the family I can contact around the coast. It's not sounding good, based on the damage around the area. I've never vistied GC, but if it's as close to the water as I think, it can't be good. Water was over 30ft deep in areas on and around the water and bayous. I hope at best they got the planes and gear out. I wish someone could prove my estimations wrong.

edit ; i posted while Kevin922 posted, great news.

That is great to hear...when Igo built that packing area he said there was enough weight from the nails alone to keep it from blowing away in a hurricane...guess he was right!:)
I hope everyone fared well during the storm, and hope the dz is up and running soon!

I spoke to Donna this morning and she couldn't get near the DZ.

The plane was flown out to Atlanta Sunday morning to get new Super Otter engines, so it should be fine. William and I took some of our video editing equipment and inventory out and the windows were borded up. So far, a lot of regular GC jumpers have been contacted and are doing fine (including William and me).

Jumpers that I have spoken to or KNOW are safe:
Paul Cozic, Donna Speight, Adrienne Ramsey, Tim Todaro, PJ Tavernit, Jason Jerusalem, Mel Richard, Julie Golden (her dog, Chloe, a.k.a. the DZ dog has not been located), Nick Bryant, Lynette Botha, Phyllis Kyle, Eduardo Alfaro, Andre Lee, Mike and LeAnne Igo

Those I don't know about:
Paul Cruz, Dale McLemore, Tony Collado and Chantalle, Chad and Veronica Craven, Ben and Malinda Crowell, Martin and Robin Swords, David and Becky Layne, Jennifer Jones, David and Dee Fortner, Jean Underwood, Jeff Phillips, Nagel Ledet, Tammy Tommaseo (heard she was trapped in an attic), Luis Hawkins

forgive me if I left anyone out.

I am ok they had us work at the fire station for 55 hours straight so far. Tony was in TENN. the last time I spoke to him so he should be fine, but his house being in Chalmette might not have gotten off well.
