Quick Question without a quick answer....basically you are correct...a standard formation consists of usally around 4 ranks...a rank being people lined up side by side... Lets just use a company mass formation for this example Now theres 4 ranks, at the far right of the rank (as standing in it) or the far left as looking at it, its usally the Platoon Sergeant who will be thie highest ranking person in the rank, and the further down the line you go the lower in rank the soldiers are. Now also dont let me confuse you by useing the same term for tw odiffrent things...there is a rank in the formation...meaning one of the lines of people...and the rank of the soldier...private, sergeant and so on...
