It's common, in Australian vernacular, to "nickname" a word by shortening it and adding the suffix "-o" (or sometimes "-ie", as in "barbie" for "barbecue grill"). Not unlike the way North Americans say "gas" for "gasoline", or "ad" for "adverstisement", or the Brits might say "telly" for "television".
