I haven't sent the DVD back to Netflix, because I'm going to need to watch it again to figure out what really happened.:S

So, it's award season. There is a host of good movies out there right now. Here is my take on my top 4 or so.

The King's Speech

I just finished this one. A very rich dialogue with complex characters. I especially liked how it is rooted in history, without the historical backdrop overshadowing the interaction between the two main characters. Puts a human, (if mildly neurotic) face on the royal family. I really enjoyed it.

Black Swan

I was blown away by Natalie Portman's work! Not only is her acting superb, but that woman can dance!

127 Hours

James Franco does a good job with this material, but I think the cinematography steals the show. Some really odd and interesting shots, (he's just drinking apple juice, I tell my self), kept me involved when the action (or lack of) got a little slow.

True Grit

This really felt like a true western. I know everyone is raving about Jeff Bridges, and he did wonderful, but Hailee Steinfeld nails it. Being at once both young and naive, and a tough frontier woman, she played a character with depth. I was also suprised by Josh Brolin's character. Kind of hard picturing him as a cowardly villian, but he pulled it off. Down side, Matt Damon's character didn't add much to the story for me.

Finally,

The Fighter

Christian Bale steals this one. You know going in that this is gonna be one of "those" sports movies. You know, the ones done to death, where by the underdog athlete works hard and triumphs when he gets his shot. 5 minutes in, all those misgivings are gone. That performance by Christian Bale moved him from "I can only play one kind of role aka Batman, Terminator, cause I growl well" to "I'm a fucking actor" in my mind. I know, I know, you say"well he kicked ass in American Psycho", but he was still the calm and collected character. This was way outside of his zone, and it never seemed forced.

So there you have it, I feel spoiled not having to see one shitty movie in the midst. ;)

I'm guessing you have never seen The Machinist. If so, you would realize the depth of Christian Bale's acting. It's not all Swing Kids and Batman.

Just tried the new Burger King Jalepeno Cheddar Burger.

It wasn't as hot as I hope and it certainly didn't taste as good as it looked on tv, but it certainly ripped ass on the way out. I'm talking sloppy shit with a sting - and it was rank! Seriously, I don't think I ever smelled anything like it.

It's definately not worth $3.99, but if you're the type of person that liked this review, I'd suggest giving it a try...if not, you'd probably be best just waiting for this one to come out on video.

The Social Network

Great movie!!! Based on the development of facebook. This movie was well done and kept moving along nicely. I give it 4 1/2 'likes'!

Flipped

Another really good movie. Takes place in the 60s and has a kind of 'Wonder Years' feel to it. "Two eighth graders start to have feelings for each other despite being total opposites." Gotta give this movie an 'A'...

Devil

Well, I expected this movie to completely suck so I went in with very low expectations. The whole thing also basically takes place in an elevator and I hate movies that have virtually only one scene/setting. Even though I can't give it more than a 'C-' it did manage to keep my attention. Rent it if you have no other options.

Despicable Me

Like most animated movies these days this move is pretty good. Classic bad guy turns good flick. Good watch. I give it four and a half moons. Definite watch unless you hate animated movies in which case there might be something wrong with you.

Piranha (2010)

This movie was GREAT! This is a type of cult classic that is very much like the old 80s horror movies but with twice the gore. This movie is definitely more for the guys but the ladies may get a kick out of it too. Guys if you like naked ladies, lots of blood and some cheesy humor... this movie is for you. Great entertainment! 2 Thumbs up!

This is also a film that revels in having bare breasts appear almost every five minutes. Hell, there is an entire five minute underwater ballet-like scene that borders on soft porn. But again, it does not seem like Aja cares. He just wants to revel in how much he can possibly get away with, full frontal nudity and all. It almost feels exploitative at times with just how much these female actresses show off, specifically Kelly Brook and Riley Steele (who is just one of a handful of porn stars who appear in the film). Aja knows his audience, knows his genre, and knows the films that inspired it. It almost comes off like he wanted to ensure he had enough bare breasts so he knew he did not do a disservice to all of those expecting gratuitous amounts of nudity.

True Grit

Guess I had too high of expectations for this movie :(. I love westerns, and from an acting and western style stand point this movie was GREAT! Only problem was that I was somewhat disappointed with the story line of events in the movie. I give it 3 1/2 stars, and I wouldn't have been too disappointed to see it in Blu-ray on my Samsung for the first time instead of the theater.

The Fighter

I really liked this movie. Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale were great. It's based on the true events of boxer Micky Ward. I definitely recommend this movie and give it an 'A'.

The Expendables

Loved the movie. I was worried because whenever you have that many big names in a movie it has the potential of sucking. This was good every thing fit the guy who was doing it. I watched it twice so far.
Lots of action, and Jet lee is very funny.

I give it

** ** ** ** 4 set of Balls for the amount of testosterone in the movie.

This movie sucked there was no plot line things just happened randomly nor did he create any kind of understanding who the characters were. my roommates and i were excited to see this film and we were all extremely disappointed. The A-Team was a lot more interesting and entertaining and overall a much better film

I agree. It sucked. In the same genre of "Lets get a bunch of old actors and make them look like action figures", Red was much better, and much less pretentious. It wont win any awards, but it was fun.

Just saw RED a few nights ago and liked it too. It wasn't spectacular but definitely good action, descent humor, very entertaining and a good rental.

Agree with that.

Danny Boyle is right up there with Tarantino as the most inventive major director working today, and visually his films are in a class of their own, IMO.

And right now I'm looking forward to seeing Never Let Me Go, and The Adjustment Bureau.:)

I liked it too... I was actually expecting it to be more graphic. I was surprised that he got his arm caught in the first 15 min.

The King's Speech

Man... I guess this was just way too hyped up for me cause I really wasn't that impressed. Some people say it's a movie about over-coming greatest fears, or about the relationship between teacher/pathologist, or beating his disability, etc... I just thought it was about a guy with a speech impediment. I didn't think it was bad but I definitely wouldn't watch it again.

Source Code

I liked this movie for it's entertainment value... I think they tried to make it like a 'puzzle solver' but failed in that sense. Definitely a good rental when it comes out.

Rango

The characters in this movie were really cool! I thought it was going to be a funnier, but overall thought it was a pretty good movie... plus I'm a sucker for animated movies. :)

Anyone has the inside scoop on Black Swan?

Just watched it.
Depressing as hell to watch a person losing their mind.
But the Mila Kunis / Natalie Portman girl-on-girl action got a thumbs-up.

Anyone has the inside scoop on Black Swan?

(pssst: Quade, that means you)

Wrote this last December. I thought I posted it here, but maybe not.

----------
I hereby guarantee, no spoilers follow.

Darren Aronofsky’s latest film is set in the world of ballet, specifically a company’s new version of Swan Lake. If you’re not familiar with the ballet, Aronofsky quickly gets you up to speed. First visually in a dream sequence by showing a key scene from it where a princess, played by Natalie Portman, is cursed by an evil sorcerer turning her into a White Swan and then through dialogue as the ballet company’s director, played by Vincent Cassel, recaps the story to his company before picking potential candidates to play the lead.

The problem is that the ballet requires the lead to play both the good White Swan and the darker, seductress, Black Swan. Aronfsky plays with this duality and, in much like his other films, the ambiguity and self destruction of obsession. In this case, the Portman character’s schizophrenic relationship with; her mother, played by Barbara Hershey, another dancer in the company, played by Mila Kunis and her George Balanchine-like director.

Aronfsky accurately hits just about every note in the ballet world and hits all the less-than-pretty aspects yet without making the story about them; the petty rivalries just to be in the room, the misshapen feet crammed into toe shoes, eating disorders and what happens to a dancer when they’ve gone past their prime.

If Portman doesn’t end up with Best Actress for this, there’s something wrong. Not that she’s ever given a bad performance in anything, but the darkness of this role is something rare and Portman’s portrayal is fantastic.

The movie is not for everyone. It’s an adult story with adult themes. Don’t take the kids. Do take yourself.

----------

And, of course, Portman did win.
