Higgs boson?

GENEVA (AP) — Scientists working at the world's biggest atom smasher plan to announce Wednesday that they have gathered enough evidence to show that the long-sought "God particle" answering fundamental questions about the universe almost certainly does exist.

OK who read this thread as...Huge Bosoms?

That said! Wow that's great news! But....ok hate to sound like a stick in the mud but...what will this mean for us dorks who live in the non sub atomic level?

Help out the slow guy, has any of this sub atomic particle stuff really provided any commerce? Other than nuclear bombs and nuclear energy and maybe microwave burritos?

Nope,
I knew exactly what the title referred to.

You should be happy, Shah. A new generation of smaller nuclear arms may result from this. It's good for business...

You can't really be saying you don't see the potential benefits to better understanding of sub-atomic particles??? Come on, Shah.

Electronics. (Electrons are sub atomic particles). Do you have a cell phone? Thank a physicist.

I'm a lover, hi ladies yes i am, not a fighter.
So I'm crossing my fingers someone much smarter than me will think of a way to utilize this technology for the key to clean energy.

I mean right now, I'm a little disappointed in the nano technology boom. The other day I was looking at a 55 gallon drum of nano aluminum swimming in nitrogen. I asked the guy what it was going to be used for and yeah it sounded cool for making a bigger brighter bang but...I wasn't at all impressed with the commercial aspects of it.

I have seen some amazing parts made in prototype but...it always comes to the same issue...."So how can we scale up and make money off of this new wonder product?"

Maybe the sub atomic world will provide us some good answers? After all if you can make cheap energy you can literally save the world from itself. Be it harvesting the atmosphere for clean drinking water to recycling garbage. Overall we are truly an energy hungry yet energy poor civilization.

Well, to be fair, electricity as a science was around for a lot longer than particle physics. (And they did get the signs wrong. Damn that Franklin.)

Some of the greatest advances in our technology have grown from from scientific discoveries that, at first, appeared to have no uses. Curious people such as LaVosier, Franklin, Curie and countless others poked, prodded and teased basic secrets from the natural world. It often takes many years, even many generations, to go from discovery to commercial application. Look at what we've done with that laboratory curiosity called electricity. :)
Today, at our level of scientific knowledge, few discoveries are left that can be found by backyard labs or garden observatories. It's taking more and more money to push back the dark edges around our scientific knowledge, but I argue it's always worth it. Consider the story of Benjamin Franklin seeing a demonstration of the Montgolfier Bros. hot air balloon in Paris in the late 1700's. When asked by someone of what use it was, he supposedly replied "Of what use is a newborn baby?"

If this Higgs boson leads us to understanding mass, attraction, etc. and we could learn to control it somehow, how about, oh, I don't know, an anti-gravity device someday? Personal flying saucer, anyone?B|

Although the name "God Particle" is a bit of over-rated media sensationalism, I do think it is important enough to have a name other than "Higgs". It's a little like a world-class concert violinist having a name like "Bubba". (maybe they should have named it the "Jesús Particle" in honor of the effect or "shape" of it's field.)

I am still confused by the "God Particle" title. What they have come close to proving or what they have amassed enough evidence to publish is they have found mass created on the sub atomic level. This is pretty big bc for about 40 yrs or so they have been working on this and it was an essential missing piece to Higgs Standard Model.
Life is all about ass....either you're kicking it, kissing it, working it off, or trying to get a piece of it.

God's particle presentation written in Comic Sans
Quote

The world is just starting to wrap its head around the so-called "God particle," a new subatomic particle that could be the Higgs boson, the basic building block of the universe. But what some people are talking about is not the discovery itself, but how it was presented.

Scientists at the CERN research centre unveiled their findings with a presentation that used Comic Sans, a font that is often the object of derision among designers.

The Twitterverse had a field day with the Higgs boson Comic Sans presentation. One user joked that "The Higgs Boson announcement being made in Comic Sans is proof that God particle has a sense of humor."

This isn't the first time a public announcement has been mocked because of Comic Sans.

the simplest way i know it is the smallest particle from which all atoms are created and the one that makes every thing in the known universe possible, like the creator, god. When the cold war as active and physicists were looking for funding all the physicists had to say was the Russians are building one and they would get their funding. Once the cold war was over physicists looking for billions of dollars of tax payers money to build a particle collider needed a new way of proving their funding was worth while, so the higgs boson became the god particle.

here is a link but the first 3 minutes are off topic so you may want to fast forward

So a Higgs goes into a Catholic church. The priest says "We don't allow bosons in here. The Higgs replies "Hey, without me you can't have Mass".
