Whats the logic behind the mini risers for swooping??
hokierower replied to BETO74's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Pretty sure this was covered in depth on another thread here. I think I remember Ian Drennan saying that he'd jumped different riser lengths on the same canopy and couldn't noticeably tell the difference. I could be wrong though... -
Whats the logic behind the mini risers for swooping??
hokierower replied to BETO74's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
No idea what the point of those are...maybe for shorter people with shorter arms? I'd never use them though as they don't appear to have any sort of a hard cable housing for the cutaway cables. I personally have 24" risers that ALMOST require full arm extension to grab the dive loops. I like them as they give me the most leverage for grabbing my fronts for my turn. Maybe people who only use their harness would be interested...? -

What are you calling 'mini risers'? -
If we could upvote on this forum, you'd get one. Nicely written synopsis. That said, OP, I'm not sure if they'll ship overseas, but there's a new canopy based out of Deland called Fluid Wings. They released a canopy called the Prime a little bit ago. I've never personally jumped it, but have heard some good things about it. Acts like a Pulse but supposedly is a little more fun. I'd give them a call.

I jumped at STC for about a month and a half back in 2011 when I was in the cities for work. Nice DZ with a great atmosphere and some awesome people. Glad to hear from DQ that the freefly scene has picked up. Definitely a good DZ to call home. I'm actually back in the area this month for some work, but there's no way I'll be jumping while I'm here.

When to start working on turns bigger than 90
hokierower replied to evan85's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Find a coach to physically teach you and progress from there. There's no magical point at which you receive a decree that says you are now allowed to turn >90 degrees. Take it slow, take it easy, and make sure you have a proper wing. I can't stress enough having someone who knows wtf they are doing watching you and providing feedback. Don't start hucking turns because you can. You'll pick up bad habits that make an already dangerous discipline even more dangerous. -
Why a full and not a slider only (yes, I know the only difference is the lanyard)?

How aggressively did you down size?

Burnaby in Ontario has one. The water level is a bit low, but I sunk weights this season for the water gates and am leaving buoys and bollards behind for next season.

Vertical Raptor VS. LiquidSky Cosmo swoop shorts

Neither. I got an awesome pair of freefly pants made by Skimmer Suits when I was -
Has anyone given any thought to using Flysights in conjunction with the protracks? Seems like it would be a solid backup.

What is a good wind meter that doesn't cost too much?
hokierower replied to 3mpire's topic in Gear and Rigging
Rip up some grass and toss it in the air. Cost is free... -
First ever boogie coming up, pretty nervous.
hokierower replied to Kalrigan's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Burnaby will be pretty fun this weekend. Listen to everyone on here and show up ready to have fun. See you there. -
I have a Vc1. My first main in it was a Sabre2 120 and it fit pretty well like RI said it would. I downsized from that to a Velo 103 (packs the same size as the 120 per PD) with only 3 jumps on it and THAT was a major PITA at first, but now it fits like a glove. I also bought RI's new semi-stowless bag. VERY NICE piece of gear. RI is spot on with their packing chart. I'd definitely give them a call tomorrow and talk to Sandy or Angela. Hell, anyone will do over there. Great manufacturer.

UPT Vector Containers order wait time
hokierower replied to binaryfinary's topic in Gear and Rigging
DO IT! I love my Curv and recommend RI to everyone looking for a New rig. Super comfortable, everything is standard, great customer service, awesome communication. Two thumbs wayyyy up. My only concern for you would be that they don't make large containers...I think the largest one holds a 170...maybe a 190. Call them up and talk to them! They'll answer all of your questions. -
New action cam model from Sony , AS100V
hokierower replied to padraigbrowne's topic in Photography and Video
Can this camera be rotated like the Contour so that it lays flay on top of a helmet and still shoots "regularly" or is it one orientation only like the GoPro? -

Best Current Sony - Compatible with Hypeye D-Pro?
hokierower replied to Scrumpot's topic in Photography and Video
Does the Hypeye work with that adaptor? I've got a CX-430 and was wondering if I had spent money on a non-usable camera. -
Landing on your butt: risk vs likelihood?
hokierower replied to eatfastnoodle's topic in Safety and Training
If you can't stand-up a no wind landing, you've got no business swooping.I never said I couldn't stand up a no-wind landing, I said that if it's no wind and I've just done a 270 and am still moving across the ground at a good rate, there's no way that I'm gonna try and run it out and risk tripping over my feet and possibly hurting something. Thanks for going straight to worst case scenario without knowing all the facts. And as someone else pointed out, lots of pro swoopers slide their landings out. -
I second the Curv. Mine is 100% locked in while jumping but doesn't limit my range of motion.

Landing on your butt: risk vs likelihood?
hokierower replied to eatfastnoodle's topic in Safety and Training
I'll slide it in after a swoop in 0 to light wind, but if it's over 4-5mph then a stand-up is the way to go.
