  1. Uh, ok. I was thinking more along the lines of the cords getting hung up on something. J
  2. So I've been thinking of doing this for a while with my minidisc. Are there any safety/other reasons why one shouldn't wear headphones? J J YSD#0009
  3. I just bought a used hornet 170. I absolutely love the flight characteristics of this canopy. However, I only have 70 jumps so what do I know. I was demoing a Safire 169 and for all intensive purposes I would say they are very comparable canopies. I think the Hornet has less front riser pressure than the safire and a little better glide. (I couldn't believe the spot I got back from this weekend.) I will say I thought the flare was a little better on the safire but I think that had to do more with a higher wingloading than anything else. (the safire and Hornet, at least to my understanding, are sized differently with the safire probably being closer to a 150/160 than a 170) Overall I love this canopy!! And how can you beat the price!! J J YSD#0009
  4. I used to run a similars setup as nws01 except that I kept the tank and the regulator outside of the frig. I had a #20 tank (we ran through a lot of beer)that I kept in the closet and ran the air line back along a wall and in through the bottom of the frig. One thing to look out for: Depending on the type of refrigerator you get (I had a really really old style) you don't want your hoses to touch anything metal. Mine kept frosting up on me and came close to freezing the beer in the line multiple times. (I guess, one way to solve this would be to keep it flowing...) The backflow valve is a money idea! I just wish I had had one! Good luck and be wary of beer mooches if you have this in any sort of public place... BTW: Soda kegs are where it's at if you are into homebrew. You can pick them up through most homebrew shops as well as find them on the web. J J YSD#0009

    Paris....

    Count me in! J J YSD#0009
  6. Glad you made it! J J YSD#0009
  7. I just received my main yesterday and I assembled it onto my risers. Before you begin to flame me I am going to get it inspected by a rigger. (mainly because I need new links) But my question is this: What is the proper technique for attaching the brake lines to the toggles? Thanks. Jensen
  8. Whooo Hooo!!!! My canopy arrived yesterday!! This makes the final installment to my "Beer" rig!!! I would like to thank: RGOPER for the Hornet, man is that thing beautiful, M Brown for the Reflex and Tempo, this thing fits like a glove, Larry at Adventure Sports Loft for the repack, mods, and tons of advice and time, and finally, all of you for advice and knowledge that I have learned by lurking on here for the past 6 months. Thanks everyone and Blue Skies. J Now where did all that money go.....
  9. Year 2000 Summer Occupation: Bartending in a farming town amidst thousands of acres of wheatfields. State of mind: Bored Stiff!! So I decided to do something fun one weekend. Called up the closest dropzone and drove out there. Once, I saw everyone deploying their 'chutes I went back in and signed up for the S/L class. I was hooked the minute I put my feet out the door.
  10. Yep ditto Quade. Thanks for the info. J J YSD#0009
  11. Yeah I was talking with the rigger @ Perris about that. He said he has replaced quite a few stiffeners when they get really bent but that mine look ok. I think, like Chile, I'd just be a little more comfortable with secondaries. Sorry about jacking the thread Chile. I'm outta here... J
  12. I was wondering the same thing as Chile. My right riser cover has a nasty tendancy of poping open whenever I bend, although it doesn't have a problem in the air. I would just feel more comfortable with secondary risers. J J YSD#0009

    Triple X

Ok I'll buy that. But outrunning an avalanche ten feet behind him for (call it 5 minutes) no way!! I will say that I LOVED the welcoming party when they arrived at the castle!!!! Honeys galore!!! and my favorite line/s: "Bitches come!" "It's a small price to pay for putting foot to ass for my country." BS J

Ok so how many of you saw "XXX" over the weekend? If you did, what did you think of it? Personally, I thought the action was a blast but the dialogue left a little to be desired. Oh and that sub what was up with that? J J YSD#0009
  15. I don't want to start a gigantic thread just a few informed responses will do. (Yes, I went back in the archives and tried to dig up a worth while comparison but it the thread that I found got side tracked very quickly) Sooo...without further ado what if any are the major differences in opening & flying characteristics between the two with sizes of 170 & 169 respectively? Thanks. J J YSD#0009
  16. Hmm... you know I'm in a somewhat similar boat. 23/4 trying to find direction. I just feel that you have to try a little bit of everything until you find out exactly what it is you like. A few people have already said it but I'll pitch it again too. What is the point of doing something (even if it makes you a ton of money) if you are not happy doing it? Take a chance! I wish I had in college. There were a few road trips across the country and to the Far East that I would have loved to have been on. But I too was worried... what about the money, what about my future, etc, etc... Yes this is a pivotal point in your/our lives and yep there are a ton of routes out there for you/us to take (military, beach bum, etc.) but hey, you won't find out what really makes you happy in life until you experience the things that don't. Likewise, IMHO you won't find out what you really want out of your life until you have found out what you don't. Learn from your accomplishments and mistakes, ask questions of those who have gone before us, (As you can see there are a few who have been in the same place before) and move out from there. Remeber it's your life and you only have one. Oops, now I'm starting to ramble. Good luck and experience as much as you can. Those people that do always seem to have the best stories. J J YSD#0009
  17. Michele, I'm kind of in the same boat as you. (Newbie with low time)I'd gladly jump with you anytime you want. I'm down here for the summer and have nothing else to do on the weekends but fall out of planes. PM me if you want and we can plan something for the next time I'm out there. BS Jensen J YSD#0009
  18. For a good (arguably the best) text on climbing that will give you a reasonable overview and lots of the basics, go to a bookstore and pickup the book "Freedom of the Hills". It's put out by the Seattle Mountaineers club. I would then go down to a rock gym and find out if there are any clubs in the area that have outings to your nearest rock plus spend a lot of time in the gym building up your skills. Once you start getting the hang of it get out on real rock. There really isn't IMHO a substitute for it and you will learn a bunch more from your mistakes there than you might in a gym. Beware of those spewing mindless info because there are a lot of people that might not know as much as they like to think. Good luck and have fun. J YSD#0009
  19. Ok. So on that regard is it customary for a rigger fix this free of charge? J YSD#0009
  20. Well I just got my "Beer" rig this past weekend. It looked beautiful! I had the reserve repacked, demoed a main, and went jumping. Special thanks to everyone at Perris for such a good time. I was having one problem that was really irking me though. My right side riser cover kept coming undone. I think this was caused by the way the risers were sitting in the container. They seemed to be putting a lot of pressure on the outside portion of the riser covers. Does anyone know if there is a Mod. out there that can be done to extend the tuck tabs? They seemed to be fine in free fall but they would open whenever I tied my shoes or stretched out. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks. Jensen J YSD#0009
  21. Canuck, Check out www.ground-rush.com They have a ton of links to dealers, used gear websites, as well as links to all/most of the major manufacturers. Plus they have some good articles on what to look for when buying new/used gear and a first rig. J YSD#0009
  22. So I'm looking at buying used gear from a couple of people online. I am wondering if any of you have suggestions on how I should go about this as I don't want to get stuck with a $3,000 garbage bag? I have worked a deal with someone for the Container/Reserve and it looks like this is going to be a COD deal. As for a main, I am a little more worried. I don't want to get stuck with something that actually has 600 jumps when it is advertised as 60 jumps. I'm also trying to figure out how I can get all of the gear checked out by a rigger before paying for it. Any hints here as well? As a side note how do you get the faces up in the text of the message? Thanks. BS Jensen J YSD#0009
  23. Thanks for all the help guys. Yep I'm from the rainy state but I am currently soaking up the sun in LA. SkyDolphin gave me some hints about going to Perris and talking with manifest about newbie loads as well as a contact at Elsinore. Sorry Ramon, while I would love to get out there I think the lone star state is a good drive. Thanks for the offer though. I will gladly take you up on it if I ever stroll on through. Thanks for the Help. Jensen J YSD#0009
  24. Hi there. Well I'm a long time lurker but a first time poster. I am trying to get into free flying and I was wondering what is the best way to go about it? The dropzone that I am going to be jumping at over the next couple of months does have a FF school but I can't afford to shell out the cash for it. I was hoping to find a mentor or someone who can give me some pointers and make the occasional jump with me but I am afraid that this would conflict with the DZ's position/vibe with regards to the school. Does anyone have any suggestions? Blue Skys. J J YSD#0009
