  1. That's a cop out. There's a legitimate safety issue at hand for a large number of jumpers. The guy could easily put his feelings aside and posted a statement, or simply use a proxy who isn't afraid to post. In any other case, he can come and go from here as he pleases. In this case, being the keeper of essential safety-related information, he has a duty to spread the word in any and every way possible. The issue goes beyond his personal feelings, and into the safety of others. That's why he filed a report with the USPA. I don't think he's copping out. I don't blame him for avoiding this forum.
  2. Okay, not a dz.com user. But you are. Could you ask if he would be willing to publish whatever he sent to USPA? There really shouldn't be any need for secrecy about this. After conversations with a number of people, I have learned that there is hard evidence that the loop was partially cut. Had the available information been published in the first place, I would not have started this thread. That won't be happening since the dz.com drama and the bullshit of the computer screen skygods has long run him off. I don't even dare ask. If you want more info PM me and I will give you his email address so you may contact him directly.
  3. The rigger that has the information and that filed the USPA report is not a dz.com user. I know a little bit about the incident but not enough to elaborate other than it occurred a few weeks ago around the beginning of March 2011. I doubt anything will ever show up on this forum. I'm not aware of the skydiver being a dz.com user either.
  4. I think I got mine at Square 1. They were around $50 or so each. But you check them out AND buy them here: http://www.joaotambor.com/dvd.html
  5. Chicks jumping from planes is a cool thing.
  6. There are a few line trim charts out there so be careful. I'm pretty sure the one you want shows the A and B lines on the inside as separate from the canopy to the risers and NOT cascaded in to one line. This only applies to the center two lines.
  7. +1 on that. I have both CX and GoPro, two setups, two intended purposes (work and casual). I got GoPro after getting Sony and it filled all the gaps where I would not use CX. They complement each other perfectly. For me at least. my2c If you really want a complementary set up try the Drift Stealth HD170 instead of the GoPro. It's far superior in every aspect for skydiving and it already has the LCD viewing screen.
  8. The wind does not have to be "strong" to be dangerous. Of course that word is very subjective however it's the gusts in particular that are dangerous. I have my limit to less than 10 mph steady wind to gust differential. In other words if the wind is steady at 2 mph and it's gusting to 12 it's no less dangerous than the difference between 15 and 25 as far as canopy collapse risk goes and I don't jump and I don't ever make an exception. Sometimes it's hard but I go home and wait for a better day. I already have enough jumps and don't really need any more so the ones I do get are going to be as risk free as possible.
  9. Buy a Drift Stealth HD170. Far superior to the GoPro and can be had for around $300 including an extra battery.
  10. The Pilot, Hornet and Sabre 2 are similar in that the are of a semi elliptical design. In my experience with all three that's about where the similarities end. For the record I have flown all three at equal sizes for hundreds of jumps. In my opinion the Pilot is superior. The Sabre 2 is close to the Pilot but is less responsive and doesn't open as nicely as the Pilot. In other words when you pull on a toggle the Pilot is much quicker than the Sabre 2. The Hornet opens very "snappy" and is very sluggish in comparison to either the Sabre 2 or the Pilot and the flare is non-existent. The only thing the Hornet has going for it is it's easy to pack. The Hornet opened so hard I couldn't wait to get rid of it. I can detail more but this really isn't the venue for that.
  11. Were you smoking crack? These two canopies are completely different in the way they open and the way they fly.
  12. The riser covers popping open are caused by a poor reserve pack job. Ask your rigger to pack the fabric lower and not so much into the "ears" of it. I had the same problem when I first got my Icon. Now that it's packed properly the riser covers lay nice and flat and don't come open at all.
  13. Drift says you don't want an SD card higher than a class six. The Drift Stealth is an awesome camera for what it is. 60 frames per second in HD 720 is awesome for slowing down those exits and cool docks. It will never be a "real" camera but for a simple POV you can really put together some neat stuff. The Drift beats the GoPro hands down in my opinion both for looks and function. Here'a a picture of the pre Stealth HD170 mounted on my Tonfly CC1:
  14. The best thing ever to alleviate all of your reserve ride fears is to do an intentional cutaway. Of course you have to have access to the equipment to do this but it would be well worth the effort to find someone that offers this experience. UPT has a guy that travels to boogies and for the cost of a repack you can demo the skyhook and a PD reserve on a tertiary rig. There is nothing that will compare to that other than a for real cutaway. Otherwise just treat every single jump as one that will be a reserve ride and put your faith into your gear.
  15. Every place that drops jumpers kicks ass.... What's so special about Temple that we need to know about?
  16. Nice rig Huskers! I got to see it for real but don't forget to put a picture up for everyone else! When you're ready for something smaller let me know and I'll sell you mine...since you like it so much. LOL. Here's a photo to refresh your memory:
  17. ACL? That's two weeks later and an hour away. What would that have to do with it? ACL = Allowable Cargo Load Matt Could be. Anyway, Happy New Year!
  18. ACL? That's two weeks later and an hour away. What would that have to do with it?
  19. I know a few freefliers out West that are wearing that same helmet...there's no reason it won't work and provides a ton more protection than ANY helmet made specifically for skydiving. After seeing your post I'm considering one for myself. I guess I should start wearing one on the slopes too...LOL.
  20. Don't believe everything you read.....Spaceland is awesome, I'm not sure about the new SD Houston but I'm sure it's going to be epic. Maybe you have San Marcos and Temple mixed up? San Marcos is awesome with a Twin Otter and a Caravan and awesome jumpers and facilities. Temple is not bad but not a real turbine dropzone like the others. I think there's a reason the Anvil Brothers are moving their annual boogie from Temple to San Marcos.....just a hunch.
  21. Probably never. I have personally witnessed two different UPT rigs with magnetic riser covers have the toggles come out in a head down position. It's probably worthy to mention I've never seen it happen otherwise however in my limited experience this could just be a fluke. One rig it happened 3 times within a few months of being new and required a cut away two times. He sent the rig back for "repairs" and is now testing. So far so good. The other rig is now being used for RW only. He too had to cut away the wrapped up toggle. The owner will not free fly with it. He happens to be the UPT dealer and DZO. I have an Infinity that has not come open yet and neither has my VooDoo. I'm in the camp of "if it's not broken don't fix it". How did the toggles get out? I can understand that the risercovers open but the toggles should be much further down and tight squeezed in between the reserve and the sides of the rig. Was the canopysizes in this rig correct? Im not saying its impossible but it would perhaps be more likely to happen if you have smaler canopys than the rig is built for I'm not sure how they got out but on both rigs and all occasions they came out while flying head down. In both cases the rigs were new and canopies were sized correctly.
