  1. and you are making repeated personal attacks and not even bothering to couch it in 'political' talk... (i can see you're a hater of palestinians) me? Repeated? lol, that was my first post in the thread, and if it looks like a duck... If anyone wants to ban me for calling it like I see it, then fine. I haven't said one word about palestinians, either. They are people just like Israelis. Read what I quoted. How is it OK to troll us with blatant and false stereotypes like "jews argue for discounts becuase they didn't get cream cheese on their bagel". Seriously, i found that incredibly offensive. So I suppose if I said I find it offensive when someone uses the disgusting phrase "he jewed him down" or "you're such a cheap jew" doesn't mean I hate Palestineans. I also find it offensive when someone makes a sweeping generalization like "all muslims are terrorists". Oh wait, I can't defend one without hating the other? How could I possibly live with such a skewed world view? And of all people, if you paid ANY attention to these forums, you would know that I'm one of the more liberal people on here. I thought that was your thing? Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  2. Dude.., you really don't want to go there! You poor poor put upon Jew! Jews believe themselves put upon when they don't recieve special treatment! HAROLD !!!! They don't have any cream Cheese!!!!!! Do I get a discount since they don't have any cream cheese? THEY DON"T HAVE ANY CREAM CHEESE !!!!! Jews in Egypt weren't exactly slaves as were those Afro Americans in the deep south. The Jews in Egypt simply weren't treated as if they were better than anyone else. To them that is to be treated wrong!! Slaves!!! can't believe this thread has lasted so long when it's based on a troll post. Really, no comments on the gem from page 1 from the OP? The real truth comes out. Honestly, We can have a thread like this if it's discourse like that presented by Markharju, falx, and darius. However, the blatant racism by the OP shines through right here. He may couch it in "political" discussion, but really, the OP is just a hater of Jews. 3. Yeah, he played well from what I saw on the live stream. But Ben Lamb is having the year of his life. The guy is a machine. sick, sick sick run this year, and pretty much has player of the year locked up. Can't wait to see how he does in November. Giannetti is one to watch, too. 4. *sigh* "generic republican" means absolutely nothing. On the Libertarian side of the house, I actually prefer Gary Johnson to Ron Paul. I lived in NM when he was governor, and he actually got shit done. Too bad no one is talking about him. As for the others? eh, point me to a survey that tells me he'd lose to one of the named candidates, then maybe i'll pay attention. As it is, "republicans" are so divided right now, I can't see anything real until primary time. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  5. 31/33 correct. though I would argue that much of that test concerns HISTORY as opposed to CIVICS. You can study the American system of government without knowing what the subject of the Lincoln/Douglas debate was. Not saying you necessarily *should*, but you can. Good thing I know my history. The Left Lane

eh, i don't get upset when someone is going slow in the left lane. I mean, it's annoying and unsafe to pass them on the right, but I will. What IS annoying is when they go the SAME SPEED as the car next to them...and it's slow. *sigh* Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  8. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Slow down there, William Faulkner! You didn't really expect this crowd to know what "rhetorical" means; did you? yeah, really, you elitist bastards in your ivory tower using all them big words and historical "facts". Damn, think about us normal people for once! Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  9. this is... dammit. Ash was one of my "old school" buddies from when I jumped at Eloy 9 years ago. Definitely one of the good ones. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  10. well, here's the thing. For me, I find my friends among those who share similar interests, or among those whom I am around most of the time. I was in the military. I skydive. I play poker. I play video games. I follow baseball and football. Sense a pattern here? That's right, mostly guys or "guy things". So most of my friends are guys. My best friend is a guy. I'm also happily married to one of those guys. Things I'm NOT interested in are: Shopping, makeup, TV, children (mine, yours, or anyone else's), beauty, children, children children. See, the trouble I'm finding with women my age and befriending them is that all most of them ever want to talk about is their kids, why i don't have kids, other people's kids, etc. If that makes me as stereotypical as Shah, so be it...it's my experience. I have never been "girly", i've always been a tomboy. When the other girls were at the mall, I was over at my neighbor's house building things. So why would I force myself to befriend people with whom I have nothing in common? Gender doesn't really matter. I do have a couple of female friends who happen to be interested in similar things. They are like me, though, and also have a lot of guy friends. I really had no idea of the perception Shah is talking about, though. And the fact that many of you agree is just as surprising. I guess my head has been in the sand. Or perhaps I'm secure enough in myself and my choices that perceptions don't faze me? 11. hahah, my dad actually got my mom a vacuum for xmas one year when we were kids. whooo boy, i think we ALL learned a valuable lesson that year Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  12. She could use a cheeseburger. No, no, no! Size 8 rule! remember? dude, that chick could eat one of everything on the McDonald's menu and maybe be a size 4. Scratch that. Size 2. Still well under the Shah line. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  13. Not as long as "The Sun Also Rises" stays in print. or as long as Sanfermines is the most popular party in Europe (think Mardi Gras for a week straight...I lasted a day and a half ). Yeah, i just can't ever see Nevarra, at least, banning bullfighting. From a purely cynical, economic standpoint, they make so much tourist money during that one week in July that they would fight it tooth and nail. And don't even get me going on the basque nationalist implications. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  14. i know my opinion isn't popular, but i've been to a full corrida and i actually really enjoyed it. it was artistic and emotional and I understand its appeal. Also, read "Death in the Afternoon" by hemingway for a real understanding of how bullfighting is pretty much intertwined with the soul of Spain. I know that sounds weirdly emotional and poetic, but it's true. Having been there and seen it, i can see both sides, but i can't see it being banned any time soon. 15. No, the DoJ is too busy prosecuting people for breaking laws based on ultra-conservative morality to catch real crooks. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  16. those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. They do teach English (4 years worth, typically) in high school, but even with all Honors classes at a top California HS, it wasn't until college that I actually learned to write. You do need this in your career, you're hurt by a failing here. Lack of foreign language skill probably won't hurt you, but a good choice here could be a boon for your career options. History is far worse - the political school boards write the textbooks for the public schools. Now we have intelligent design and creationism in the books. And while it's not as blatant as the grade school and junior high versions, even in high school the US rarely does wrong. In college, patriotism isn't part of the equation. Some of the problem is developmental. The brains of teens, esp in the first 2 years, is quite different from the ones in the college students. And the last problem is that most college frosh have no fucking idea what they want to do. The breadth requirements give them a wider exposure and may redirect them early on. The engineers and many of the other scientists don't have much choice here - the degree track often has so much serialization of course requirements that 3/4 of their schedule is fixed from semester 1 on. But those few electives give them another course if they aren't finding the tough, heavy work of the major of choice not worth it. This. Yeah, don't teach engineers how to write. good god, do you know how many horribly-written SOWs and contracts I had to read in my short career? Seriously folks, even engineers need to know how to write, how the world works, how economies function, and how projects are managed. They aren't teaching that in your junior level dynamics class, i guarantee it. getting rid of core = BAD IDEA! Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  17. back before they gutted it, one of the best things about the Air Force Academy education was "THE CORE" (say that with an ominous, heavy tone, maybe a "duh du duhhhh" after it). Oh, we hated it when we were there, but looking back, it was the best thing I got out of that place. Every person had the same core requirements. One basic class from every department/sub field (including all the different "engineerings") On the flip side, I, as an aero major, still had to take philosophy, law, management, etc. bleh. But you know, all of those classes provided knowledge that I used in my job, and some of the fuzzy ones i used more than the engineering ones! I totally agree that everyone should have a well-rounded core education. it's too bad it's all limited by finances. 18. i pick....Animal Kingdom! oh wait, it's too late Has anyone ever BEEN to the derby? it's an amazing experience. when i was a little girl, i wanted a horse, as most little girls do. And I always said if i ever got a horse, I would name it Charisma. dunno why, just thought it would make a great name for a horse. fast forward to 1999, when i'm no longer a little girl, and some friends and I head down to the Kentucky Derby. "everyone place a bet, you HAVE to!" So I stood in line, looking at the bill, and there, on the bottom, at 30-1 odds to win, was a horse named "Charismatic". HOLY SHIT! It was like fate. walked right up to the window and plunked down 10 bucks for Charismatic to win. And whaddyaknow....he won! Of course. I knew it! The first and last time I ever bet on a horse, and it turned out to be the one who would come closest to winning a triple crown in 20 years, and probably would have if not for a horrible injury in the Belmont. Amazing story, actually: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charismatic_%28horse%29 my only regret about that day: i didn't wear a ridiculous hat Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  19. Oh dear, don't get me started. I'm sure I was a proofreader in some other life. Another one that gets me is when people say "broke" when they mean "broken." "please use other door, this one is broke" is incorrect and frankly, makes the author sound like a backwoods, uneducated, trailer trash hick. It also confuses me, as I am now thinking that the door has somehow run out of money. It's down and out on the streets of Detroit, begging for spare change to replace its brokeN knob. "please use other door, this one is broken." is the proper form. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  20. i'm responding to the first post... How far are you from all these places? 20 miles? 5 miles? Everyone is suggesting "get some sun". Do you own a bicycle? If you do, maybe ride it to work or class if that's feasible. Yes, you might have to get up a half hour earlier, but the exercise and enjoyment might be worth it. I understand that your yoga class helps clear your mind, but maybe you could go once a week, then the other time you had dedicated to that, do something outdoors. Or if you are familiar enough with the yoga poses/order, etc, take your mat, and do it outside instead of going to the class. Sunshine is such a huge help, seriously. 21. What rubbish. The laws against online gambling were pushed by the right. Just how successful was Prohibition? And how successful have laws against prostitution been over the past 3,000 years? While the advent of the Internet has clearly been beneficial to American society, the same cannot be said for Internet-based gambling activity. Internet gambling is too easily accessible to minors, too subject to fraud and criminal misuse, and too evasive of state gambling laws. For these reasons, I have supported legislation aimed at curbing Internet gambling during my tenure in the Senate. For example, in the 108th Congress I co-sponsored the “Internet Gambling Funding Prohibition Act” (S. 627), which was introduced by Senator Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.). Unfortunately, this bill was not signed into law, however, I plan to continue to support limits on Internet gambling should any legislation be considered by the Senate in the 109th Congress. Again, thank you for your letter. While we do not necessarily agree on the particular topic, I hope that you will continue to write on matters of importance to you. Should you have further questions or comments on this or any other issue, please do not hesitate to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841. Sincerely yours, Dianne Feinstein United States Senator yeah, they;ve been brainwashed by the religious right...amazing how pervasive it is...getting to even the dems. What's hilarious is if she would have supported the bills to legalize and regulate, the issues she mentions would be less of an issue, since regulation would take care of that shit. they are idiots. 22. ahh, and here is a good illustration of the differences between poker and gambling. If you win, say, a slot jackpot of 600 bucks or more, the money is paid out to you by the casino. They issue a 1099 because they are required to do so, as if they paid you a wage. Poker is NOT played against the house. poker winnings are won solely from other players. There is really no way to get a 1099 for this, as other players aren't considered employers or other corporate entities that can award wages/salaries/rewards. The only way my poker wins and losses are taxed (or reported for exemption...just depends on how well i ran that year) are by my own admission on my tax return. And as there are really no receipts for winnings, it's mostly done on faith. Losses can be easier to track, especially for tournament players, as records of tourney buy-ins are kept. you would be surprised at how professional poker players are actually quite honest about taxes. trust me, they want poker to be seen as a legitimate form of income as any other job. Besides, being honest about it just keeps the wheels greased for when things like this idiocy come along. And yes, America, land of the free...except where spending your own money is concerned. on that issue, you're just going to have to trust in the government to do what is right for you. I have friends who make their sole living playing online. it is their job. 8 hours, 12 hours a day, playing poker and winning enough consistently to sustain themselves. It isn't gambling, it is skill. I already know people, American citizens, who are searching for places to live in canada, mexico, europe, south america, etc so they can continue to eat. How can anyone think this idiocy is the correct course of action? *sigh* Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  23. argh, the UIGEA did NOT make "oinline gambling" illegal. It made it illegal for banks to transact with online gambling firms. The law didn't take effect until last year, anyway. And the UIGEA was a rider added to the Port security act of 2006 literally at midnight the day before passage, by Bill Frist (a republican) to appease his religious right wing constituents for a future presidential bid. Not to mention, poker has been determined by many courts to be a game of skill, and separate from traditional gambling (race books, sports books, black jack, casino games). This is about money, plain and simple. And it's not an obama or a bush issue, it's an issue of the governemtn spending money on worrying about stupid shit other than stuff that really needs to be taken care of, like corporate welfare... Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  24. Actually, I think the point he's making is, where are the DOJ indictments against the banks and firms who basically ruined the country's economy by "gambling" with our money? oh right...they got bailouts! From...BOTH bush AND obama. I guess pokerstars didn't contribute enough to political campaigns (either party!) Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  25. eh, if you research the issue at all, you know that it's actually BOTH parties' fault. This DOJ thing is just the icing on the cake started by republicans. Bill Frist for attaching the UIGEA to the port security bill literally at midnight the night before it was passed. Spencer Bauchus for blocking ALL attempts by congress to legalize and regulate online poker. Fucking focus on the fucking family for leading some kind of moral crusade against online poker and any attempt at legalizing and regulating. Basically, this is ALL ABOUT MONEY. Government wasn't getting their cut, so instead of going about it the RIGHT way, they stall legislation and go after the little guy. Because you can bet your ass the money I have sitting online at full tilt and pokerstars, which i was already reporting to the IRS, won't be seen by me ever again. Never really wanted to move to canada until now... Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
