  1. Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin (you know, game of thrones on tv) anything by Guy Gavriel Kay, Lions of Al-Rassan is my favorite, but anything he writes is great. Also, I really enjoyed Tad Williams' Otherland series...sci-fi and fantasy all rolled into one. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  2. dropzone.com holiday boogie, 2002, Eloy. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  3. Not many of the old guard left...unless they just lurk now. I still remember the first dz.com holiday boogie! by the way, i think i win this thread so far... Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  4. I guess i'll have to choose "other" since I am a Christian who is not a fundamentalist bible-basher. "Progressive Christians, breaking stereotypes since 33 A.D." Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  5. let me sum up (and thanks everyone for not bothering to read that i am no anti-gun fanatic. what, that part just slip by y'all?) Yes, people kill people. Guns just make it incredibly easy and efficient for someone to do so. for the math-inclined, how about I amend my expression to this: crazy person + gun = LOTS OF DEAD PEOPLE crazy person - gun = WAY FEWER DEAD PEOPLE reference: news report on chinese school knife attack and news report on CT school shooting. now go on ahead and insert words into this that i didn't say, or opinions that I didn't express. I fully expect it here. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  6. really? The lack of logical thinking ability in the general Speaker's Corner population just astounds me. Now, let me say right off that i am not anti-gun. I was in the military, i was ranked expert on both the handgun and the rifle, and i used to own a handgun. But really, can you not see the HUGE difference here? In a country that doesn't allow guns, 22 children were INJURED. In a country that does, 20 children were KILLED. Now assuming we can lump both attackers into the "crazy" category, simple logical analysis points straight out that no guns = lives spared while guns = lives lost. pretty tough to spin it any other way. 7. well, how about we have everyone here help you with that. here: https://www.change.org/FAAereaders i signed! Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  8. Its not just finger-pointing, but how complex issues always end up being dumbed-down and simplified. ...at least this is the case when people talks about economics imo. Cheers! :) This, and I agree with the concept. I follow two "politics" forums. One is Speaker's Corner, here on dropzone.com. The other is this one: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/41/politics/. Scan a few of the threads and you can just see the difference. And i gotta say, the other forum is getting more and more of my time because the posts are on point, detailed, in-depth, and highly-moderated. Not to mention detailed, well-written, on-point posts aren't completely ignored or one sentence of said posts taken out of context (for the most part) like they are here. And it's not like that is some Mensa forum. Those are poker players, for whom politics is a hobby, just like here. I know there are just as many intelligent and successful skydivers on here as there are poker players on there. If this steps up the level of debate in here, then I am all for it. 9. Here is a visual cliffs notes for those of us who might still be confused: https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/598399_10151241788414826_1572625708_n.jpg this is a seriously weird story, rofl Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  10. here we go, straight from the man himself. http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/14/romney-blames-loss-on-obamas-gifts-to-minorities-and-young-voters/ summation: "Obama promised to give Americans things they want, so he won the election". Also, if Bobby Jindal decided to run for president, i think it would make it a race to watch. Here's his response to that little Romney hilarity: http://www.boston.com/politicalintelligence/2012/11/15/louisiana-governor-bobby-jindal-blasts-mitt-romney-for-blaming-defeat-barack-obama-gifts/CKMQJa7p92PwSc7FXxvYqI/story.html Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  11. Ohchute, the only place where you could realistically say that voting for a 3rd party helped the other guy win is in the very close swing states. (and i don't even agree with that, but YMMV) I live in CA. Obama winning here was a foregone conclusion. How the heck was me voting for Gary Johnson in the hopes he would garner just 5% of the popular vote in any way going to change the outcome of THIS election? answer: it wouldn't have. so all the people who live in non-swing states who thought "gosh, i like Gary Johnson, but it would be a waste of my vote" were ACTUALLY wasting their vote by voting for obama/romney. 12. New Mexico, Colorado, and Florida might object ;) Here, this is better-written that i ever could and explains the whole "information bubble" i was talking about: http://nymag.com/news/frank-rich/gop-denial-2012-11/ Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  13. wasn't talking to you. coco seems like a randian/objectivist, even if he doesn't realize it. Also, to reiterate my previous post which no one read or responded to because it was apparently too long and not written in sound bite form: they lost because: economy social issues demographics ground game strawmen issues hammered about by the right wing media (LIBYA SANDY BIRTH CERTIFICATE MOOSLIM!) living in an information bubble. there, short enough for you? now, let's argue about my completely unexplained, out of context sound bytes instead of what i actually said, like everyone else around here does. *edited to add.. "you" in the latter half of this post is the general you, not specifically directed to ohchute Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  14. Wrong, it's because those woman don't know their Founding Principles. This issue is easily resolved with the Constitution. Who owns your body after God, You or the government? Same exact issue with Marijuana... both are Limited Government issues. Wrong... we need the Constitution. R vs W... is right result, wrong reason. Correct, it's called Progressivism. Same cancer that has infected both parties. Study history, its called Human Nature... which the Constitution does the best job to prevent, instead of Crony Crap-itialism which we have currently. The Constitution has no classes, and Washington warned us about parties in his farewell address. We need, The Pursuit of Happiness. I smell a Randian. Am I close? 15. They lost because of social issues. I don't care if the fox talking heads scream and yell all day about how those are "distractions" and not important and how it's the economy stupid. At the end of the day () those things ARE important. They are important to the people who voted. They lost because the Obama campaign's ground game was 100 times better than Romney's. Heard about ORCA? http://www.politico.com/blogs/burns-haberman/2012/11/meet-orca-romneys-stcentury-turnout-program-that-wasnt-149186.html Maybe being a community organizer isn't such a poor qualification after all... They lost because of the economy. Yes, the economy. They lost because of demographics. there just aren't enough old white guys out there anymore. And before you point out Marco Rubio, Bobby Jindal, etc, realize that the minorities you're trying to appease understand and recognize tokenism hen they see it. They lost because they live in a little bubble of information that is insular and impervious to penetration by actual facts. Think about it. If you spend your time around people who say and think the same things you do, of course you are going to be shocked when it comes out that there is a huge percentage of people who do NOT think that way. I really do think the right wing media screwed over their own party this time around. Perhaps even on purpose, but I doubt it. While they are over there screaming about inconsequential things like LIBYALIBYALIBYA and birth certificates and is Obama a muslim and OMG SANDY!, Obama's out there getting votes from people about real issues. Real issues that people KNOW are real issues. If you really think that Sandy is the reason Obama won this election, you are a perfect example of what I am talking about. Just stop and think about how silly that really is. THIS is what republicans hear every day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uqy5CBWjKw. If you actually believe that, and if you think this is what republicans should base their policies around, then you, my friends, are part of the reason they lost this time, and will continue to lose. 16. I'm getting tired of "literally". The misuse of "literally" makes me figuratively insane! Also, the one that always makes me chuckle is "with all due respect", both because it is overused, and because the person saying it usually has zero respect for the person they are speaking to. "With all due respect, Mr. Akin, your ideas about rape are batshit crazy." *said with a sugary tone and a big smile* Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  17. head south about 400 miles and you'll never think of chile the same way again ;) *well, dunno where you are in CO, maybe only need to go about 200 miles :P Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  18. yeah, but his recipe isn't for what you and i think of when someone says "green chile". There is nary a hatch chile in sight in this recipe. not to say it isn't good, i'm sure it is, but this seems more like texas-style chili that happens to use green things rather than true new mexican green chile stew. I also have about 20 lbs or roasted green in my freezer right now...used to be more but we ate a lot already :P Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  19. here are some more. LOL http://palmettopublicrecord.org/2012/11/06/37-people-moving-to-socialist-countries-if-obama-wins/ Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  20. well, the real telling thing was if you clicked on each candidate at the bottom and it showed the map of the states where people agreed with them the most. johnson certainly had way more than romney, and almost as much as obama. I blame the media. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  21. I also learned that if people actually voted for the candidate they agreed with most, the two people in a deadlock wouldn't have been Obama and Romney... www.isidewith.com Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  22. I learned that I will never bet against Nate Silver. oh and by the way...he got his start learning and crushing online poker. just another reason to regulate and legalize it in this country. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  23. went around 6 pm, waited for about 50 minutes...and when we left the line was no shorter. I am in California, usually vote by mail but for some reason we were moved to the "inactive voter" list so didn't get anything this year. not sure why or even how to fix that. I'm actually quite interested to see turnout numbers this time. Based on anecdotal evidence (meaning, what i saw and what my facebook network is reporting), it seems more people came out to the polls this time. 24. But you didn't answer my question. Billvon powers his entire house with solar, and then some. how does it not work? OK, fine, that's a small-scale example, and I can already see your "it's not practical" argument coming from a mile away. But it's a waste of money for us to research ways of making it practical? Rather than wringing your hands and shouting at the rain about how we're wasting our money on X, Y, and Z, why not offer alternative A, B, and C? Because it isn't your job? Because you aren't qualified? Well, if you aren't qualified to offer solutions, then I would argue that you also aren't qualified to complain so bitterly about those who ARE trying. See, I don't think it's a waste of money at all to spend resources teaching the child to not touch the hot oven...you, however, seem to be the type that will only learn after you've touched the oven and been burned. Why not just be 100% honest and say that your bottom line/wallet is more important to you than the long term health and well being of our children, our children's children, and the world's population as a whole? While I may not agree with that position, at least i'd appreciate the honesty. (That's my "fetish" with renewables, by the way. I may not be around in 300 years, but that doesn't mean i want the people who ARE around in 300 years to be forced to live in a world where they can't breathe or drink clean water, or have access to modern conveniences like, i dunno...PLASTIC...because we've used up all the fossil fuels for things that could have been powered otherwise) Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  25. so...in your mind, what are the things that work? wind power doesn't work? solar doesn't work? of course they work. what is your definition of "work" and what do YOU suggest we do to reduce our dependence on nonrenewable energy sources?
