  1. I had my first, and so far, only cutaway on jump 36. The reason I cutaway was a spinning canopy due to tension knots, we believe. There were none on the main when they got it, but a lot of people saw me spinning and both brakes were still stowed. This was rental gear that had some pretty old lines and I am sure my position at opening contributed. Anyway, how many jumps before your first? How many from first to second, and last, do you think as you got more experience do you think you may have in any way contributed to having to cut any, other than a bad pack job? Thanks "I'm not lost. I don't know where I'm going, but there's no sense in being late." Mathew Quigley
  2. [reply You're falling into the "analogy trap" form of analysis. By their very nature, analogies are almost always deficient. Thus, some issues are best analyzed uniquely, without analogies. Whether a 6 year old child should skydive is an example of that. And any parent of a 6 year old has the right to make those decisions for the child. We all see many examples of decisions of parents that harm children. The parents are then held responsible. I am certainly sure that if a 6 year old was hurt skydiving, that childs parent would be held responsible. You certainly have the right to make those decisions for your 6 year old... You have no right to make them for other children, or their parents. You also have a right to your opinion as well, no matter how Orwellian it is. "I'm not lost. 6. Now that was just mean and un-called for. I asked a serious question and you shit on my frosted flakes. Well, I hope you know that I'm making a stab at the posts people are making that start with "Would you hire..." or "Would you allow this TM..." Like this one. Don't take me seriously, ever, I'm never serious, at least on the internet. The tone was the same, so it makes for a humorous comparison. This whole post and poll seems a lot like This poll "I'm not lost. I don't know where I'm going, but there's no sense in being late." Mathew Quigley
  7. Even though I don't have a lot of experience in skydiving yet, when I went through my AFF I used three different rigs. I found two of the three were very painful while my weight was suspended. The third seemed to fit me better and was much less painful, but there was still some discomfort. Once I got measured and purchased my own rig, the only time I get any pain at all is when I really put the canopy into spins that put a lot of G's on me. You might try to see if you can get a better fit on a student/rental harness. I know the expression I heard about the student/rental rigs was, "One size fits none." Good luck. "I'm not lost. 8. I was able to download it as well, installed the PhysX driver or what the hell ever it is and have the same errors. I use a laptop and the documentation did have some stuff on running on a laptop. Simply not worth it to pursue for me. "I'm not lost. 9. I got a bunch of sites to look at when I did a google search: learning paragliding. Give that a try. "I'm not lost. I don't know where I'm going, but there's no sense in being late." Mathew Quigley
  10. Damn, that was hard to read... Spacing, paragraphs and a coherent statement would help. "I'm not lost. I don't know where I'm going, but there's no sense in being late." Mathew Quigley
  11. Sweet! Chromed oil tank, forward controls, after market mirrors, looks like a badlander seat as well. Get used to seeing nothing but lines of lights in the mirrors though. Had a '95 1200xlh and put 36000 miles on it in a year and a half. Loved the bike but when I got the Ultra, my ex-wife made me sell it: "You can only ride 1...". Loved that bike. Ride safe and practice you MC EP's always. Keep the head on a swivel and assume each and every cage on the road is out to get you. Take an experienced rider course when you can, go in without the know it all attitude and you WILL learn. They are lot's of fun as well. Ride safe... "I'm not lost. 13. Kenz, First let me say that I deeply feel for you and your family's loss and the loss of a fellow rider. I think the subject line is what got other riders hackles up. I have been riding MC's, both on and off road for 40+ years and have always owned at least 1 since I was 11. I consider myself a very competent rider and have luckily been in only 1 accident on pavement, due to a stoned kid in a VW beetle locking up brakes for a U turn at 50 mph on a back country road. He was cited for the accident, and I loss a lot of skin but nothing broken. Helmet saved my life. As I said, he was cited but the fact that I was not able to stop/slow/evade in time to miss him made me feel that part of the responsibility was mine. After that accident, and this was in 1973, I had a serious re-evaluation of my riding skills. I am very involved with riding groups and group riding, being director of a local HOG group here. I ride an 800 lb. beast and to this day I still practice panic breaking, swerving and situational awareness. With the passing of AZ Bike Week here, I was again witness to so many people on bikes that really have no clue to riding. So many buy bikes and ride just to be part of the crowd and simply have no skills to match the machine. I see riders all of the time that NEVER touch the front brake. For some reason, they think they will be able to stop with the rear, and believe me, that is simply not going to work when you really need to stop fast. Riding, in my opinion, is very much like skydiving. I practice my EP's every time I put on a rig. I practice in the hangar, waiting to board and on the plane. Just like skydiving, the skills that really count when riding are the ones that you need when things don't go right. You are right to say 'be careful', so many do not and we are seeing more and more riders hurt. Again, my deepest sympathy for you and yours. To others that ride, practice your EP's on the bike too. Just like jumping, you simply never know when you need them. Motorcycles do NOT suck ass... riders being hurt sucks ass... "I'm not lost. 15. Tony Stewart's nickname, 'Smoke', was given him while racing IRL. Seems he couldn't get the knack of leaving without smoking the tires. He told this story in 2002 at the Phoenix Tony Stewart Fan Club Picnic after taking questions from the fans there. "I'm not lost. I don't know where I'm going, but there's no sense in being late." 16. One of these days, take an advanced riding course. These courses, you ride your own bike. Not only are they extremely fun, you WILL LEARN something new. I have pretty much the same experience as you, starting at 11 (now 51). You might be really surprised at what you do learn. If you go in with an attitude that you know it all, you won't, but with an open mind, you will learn some really good stuff. I agree with starting with something smaller, but not a Sportster. While the power is less than an 88, or 96 now, and the weight is less, the CG is usually higher and the Sportster is, in fact, better suited to someone with experience. "I'm not lost. 18. I used ePassporte. I got it setup in a single day. Fortunatly, I have only had to make 1 deposit, though unless I get in the money this week, I will have to make another... "I'm not lost. I don't know where I'm going, but there's no sense in being late." Mathew Quigley
  19. About a month ago, I got pulled over on the freeway here by a Highway Patrol officer on my bike. I had crossed 4 lanes to the HOV lane in one move. There was a hole in the traffic and I just twisted the trottle and moved to the left. When I saw his lights in the mirror, I was up to 80 in a 65. I carefully pulled right through the lanes. He said I needed to travel at least 100 feet in a lane before changing, and he noted that by the time he got behind me, I had 'picked it up quite a bit'. Guy was major cool, I told him that I knew I was above the speed limit a bit, but didn't want to get run over. He let me off with a warning. I think he rode too, because he was asking about some of the modifications I have on my bike. Next day, I was on a 4 lane city street and got pulled over by a MC cop doing 55 in a 40. He said I was doing 55 and showed me the tail tale on the gun. I just said, "If you say I was going that fast, I guess I was, but I didn't think I was." The guy let me off with a verbal warning! I was fully prepared for a ticket. I know he rides too, because he told me about his 2004 Road King and even said he had seen me in December on a toy run. After those two days, I figured I had used all of my get of of jail cards so I have been taking it pretty easy since. "I'm not lost. I don't know where I'm going, but there's no sense in being late." 20. My first jump, a tandem, was with some friends that had already planned to jump so I just went with them. The tandem was at Eloy. Before the freefall ended, I had decided I wanted to do this on my own. I went back to Eloy to pursue the training and the vibe I got there was very elitist and just didn't feel good. I checked out another DZ in the Phoenix area, a much smaller DZ, Desert Skydiving Center in Buckeye, AZ. They made me feel part of the family within the first 5 minutes of talking to them. So for me, the first jump was 'other', the first serious jump was attitude. "I'm not lost. I don't know where I'm going, but there's no sense in being late." Mathew Quigley

  22. Actually, it's a Spectre. And I have to do what I can to keep them happy, I have yet managed to get the thing in the bag more than 3 times. The last jump I did, Sylvester was so busy, I did the packing, had it rolled up and had him get it in the bag for me. After that, I did the rest. I still gave him full price for the pack job. I really wanted to do that last tracking dive.
  23. Did I stuble into the Bonfire here? To the original topic, I field stow my brakes, cock the PC and reset my slider. The packers like that and I like happy packers. "I'm not lost. I don't know where I'm going, but there's no sense in being late." Mathew Quigley
  24. I use an AlitTrack and I get all of that with the analog display. Download the data with JumpTrack and I get logbook and graphed jump profile. Had a really cool graph on my one chop... "I'm not lost. I don't know where I'm going, but there's no sense in being late." Mathew Quigley
  25. Spinning from tension knots on pretty worn rental gear under a Sabre 190, jump 37. Great reserve opening though... "I'm not lost. I don't know where I'm going, but there's no sense in being late." Mathew Quigley
