  1. Dude, all I gotta say is that I'm glad you're alright. I'm surprised at how little damange there was to your truck. I'm reminded of years ago, when I was a kid, I t-boned an early model Tercel (my fault). The tercel was a right-off, my old man's Camray had a few scratches... First Omri going down with the plane, now you whacking into a DD, this's been a weird month. _Am ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999

  3. It depends on what the car is designed for. The fuel economy on my Prelude takes a nosedive if I put anything less then 91 in. I once put 87 back when it was up over $2.00, then after a three hour trip the car burned more gas - it actually cost me more then had I just filled up with the 93. You can actually damage the engine by putting in less then recomended octane. Honda's are good though, they'll electronically adjust the timing to handle the lower octane. If your car isn't designed for high octane fuel, there simply isn't any point in buying it. It's not going to make your car go faster, get better fuel economy, or run better. It tends to be european and japanese sports cars that need the high octane. American sports cars rarely need it, and will rarely take advantage of it. _Am ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999

I've thought about replacing it, I guess I'm just waiting for someone else to come up with a good one. _Am ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999

I'd just have trouble getting over the idea of her just laying there - just offering herself to me... it'd just be weird. 14. I've had ground rush a few times. Once at 8000 feet, as I was doing a solo sunset jump. Simple jump, belly down. Just lieing ont the air watching the earth come up to me. It was weird battleing with myself telling myself that there's nothing wrong, that I was not in trouble, etc. Another time I had ground rush was at 700 feet under my stiletto, as I was diving towards the roof of a hanger at Morris. A third kind of ground rush was downwinding a heatwave the first time I demo'd it. They were all fun. As for the "why's" of ground rush, aren't we maybe deconstructing it a bit too much? Isn't it enough to say that it's that feeling you get when you think you're about to burn in, weather that fear is realistic or not? _Am ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999
  15. We've had very good experiences with Dell Desktops and Servers. However, to anyone considering a laptop, AVOID DELL LIKE THE PLAGUE. Of the 8 people in my company, everyone has had their motherboards replaced at least once by Dell. We've all had our cases cracked, we've all had major components in the video system replaced. Thank god Dell has good warantee support. On average, a Dell service representative visits us once a month to fix one of our laptops. That said, their desktops and servers are bulletproof. _Am ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999

  17. Yes, Starting with 8i, Oracle runs under Linux. The install is kinda ugly, a lot of the java tools don't work perfectly. 9i is much better, but more expensive. Licenses start at $15,000 for 8i. Which is why I'm looking at the RedHat Database. My client will be willing to do open source as long as there's a respectable company behind it. This rules out MySQL, but does allow for RHDB. Oracle under linux will be the fallback if I chose to avoid RHDB. I'd just rather cut my bill by $15,000. _Am ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999
  18. Well, let's talk specifics. Take "Bob", for example. Bob has a few hundred jumps, most under a Triathlon loaded at 1.1 Bob has shown to be relatively good at landings, above average for someone with a few hundred jumps. He's stood up every landing since jump number 13. He's comfortable with crosswind and downwind landing, even in moderately high winds. Bob has been playing with double-fronts for a while. At first they were just too much fun. Now he's doing them on every landing and is starting to wonder if there's something else. Bob knows he could take the next step and start to learn 90 and 180 degree turns, but he wonders if this would really be a smart thing under his 1.1 Triathlon. Thoughts? 19. No. The PD Navigator, the canopy PD designed excusively for students, is 9 cell I believe. Again, the PD student canopy is slightly tapered. Do you think that just because of these two critera, the Triathlon is safer then the Navigator? Personally, I think there's way more things to consider then just number of cells and planform. Wing Loading, for one - is a hell of a lot more important then either of these. Secondly, depending on where you live, the better glide of a nine cell could save your ass just as much as the docility of a seven cell. Are you going to argue that the Triathlon is a better first canopy then the Navigator? Actually, I would. The Navigator would suck after 10 jumps, but that's a different debate. Canopy choice should be based on a number of factors. Saying blindly that you're going to buy product 'A' just because it was good for you is silly. When the time comes, consider all appropriate products. Then buy the one that makes the most sense. _Am (who sold his Triathlon, and loved it) ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999
  20. rhino, the Icarus Omega, Icarus Student ZP, and PD Navigator, PD Spectre are all just as safe as the Triathlon by any arguemnt. Many, myself included will argue the Sabre2 and Icarus Safire are also perfectly safe at an appropriate wingloading. Quit talking out of your ass. _Am ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999
  21. I used to say the same thing. However, we've been running redHat and sendmail on our production mail servers for the last year. The maintenance time alone has saved us bundles over Exchange. We need to do a very large b2c online store. We were first looking at commercial products from companies like intershop. Our licensing costs for Intershop would be in excess of $150,000 Instead we've chosen RedHat's InterChange - free. From what I can tell, it's feature rich and will do the job just fine. Normally I develop java servlets. So we need a servlet runner. The most common servlet runners are bea's weblogic and IBM's websphere. Both of these have licensing fees in excess of $50,000. We run our production servers on Resin. Resin is open sourced and free. As far as I'm concerned, Resin is not only cheaper, but better then Weblogic or Websphere. Every time we've tried open source, we've found it to be at least equivalent in quality, plus far cheaper both in initial outlay of cash plus maintenance labor. I used to say "you get what you pay for". Since using sendmail and resin I know this is not the case. The open software is superior in almost every respect to the commercial counterpoint. I have absolutely no qualms against recomending Sendmail or Resin for "bet your business applications". In fact, my business is bet on Resin. This will be a very large b2c eStore, it will be done for a fortune 500 manufacturing company, and it will at least partly be done on open source infastrcuture (redHat, interchange). My question is should we include the RedHatDB here, too. The RedHatDB *is* postgres. So I ask - is postgres ready for production? And yes, I'm intentionally asking here because I know what answer I'll get from the postgres people. I know there's a bunch of geeks here, and I hope one of them has actually used it. _Am ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999

  25. I tip my packers because I want them to drop the tandem and get me on the next load. Students have been bumped because I tip my packers. I don't tip my riggers, I pay them. I don't ask riggers to do anything outside of a simple inspection and repack. Payment for this service is negotiated in advance. I expect them to do this job properly, frequently I'll supervise to make sure. The only time I would tip a rigger is if they did something outside the scope of the repack - like putting my rig at the top of the pile. I don't do this out of disrespect, quite the opposite. I tip bartenders and hairdressers, not doctors and riggers. _Am ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999
