  1. hi all, a quick question. can anyone tell me if a wings W8 can take a silhoutte 170 main? i had a look at the website but cant fing anyting about container sizeing. sunrise are not open for another few hours yet,so hence posting here for a quick answer. thanks all rodger
  2. that is an eye opener indeed. but to be honest i can not see this catching on.i think its a crazy idea and absolute madness. pitching the drogue the moment you get out the door is your best hope. cant imagine the tandem master could ever recover from unstability. also the opening looked pretty positive. and the landing wasnt to nice either. i just hope we dont have a new thread in the incident forum with something like this. i bet bill booth and ted strong are looking at this video in shock and awe fair play to the guy for trying but madness at the end of the day. there is better ways to get 3some going My 2c worth
  3. i am a tandem examiner and i have jumped at dropzones that was close to lakes and the sea.i always look out the door before the jumping over water. if in doubt ask the pilot to make another pass to make sure you have a good spot. and when i worked in NZ,sometimes we had to jump 1-1.5 miles over the lake as the uppers where very strong,so i always pull a few seconds earlier to make sure to get back.so instead of pulling at 5k i would pull at 6k.it is also the law that the passenger and you have a floatation device if jumping within 1Km of open water i believe. as for having to decide wether to cutaway or not from a line over, that question has me worried.i have seen a couple solo students try to land a line over after they failed to do the correct EP's. let me tell you it was not pretty! so with the same situation on a tandem i would not even consider or even attempt it. i will always take the safest option. you can not land a tandem safely if you have to hold a toggle all the way down! so i would always cutaway from a situation like that. and take a water landing if i have to. those are my thoughts rodger
  4. Hiya, the easiest way in my opinion is to cut the spectre line with a hot knife.and when you cut the spectra piece cut it at an angle of about 60 degrees. That way you can thread it nice and easy through the holes in the washer. Rodger
  5. . I had trouble finding the cutaway handle though, for a couple of reasons. First, I was wearing a red jumpsuit, which was the same color as the cutaway handle, one. hmm that point is interesting. my opinion is your instructor should have never allowed to jump like that. glad ur ok and managed to land safely in the end. and congrats on passing your aff.
  6. Hiya i came across a simular problem in new zealand once, i relined a canopy for a customer and she complained that her canopy was doing funny things. I checked the line trim after getting the measurements from icarus and turned out thst the send the wrong lineset. Even though the labeling was correct. Get your rigger to check the line trim to make sure it is correct. But i agree sounds like the brakes are short.
  7. All foldbacks are normally secured by heavy stiching like type 3 or 5 nylon thread. Normal e40 thread is not sufficient. And that is work for a master rigger. What is the actual problem with the quick ejector? Is it for the side connectors or for the main attachment point for the shoulders?
  8. Hi, we have had that issue with a few of our rigs. Sounds like the retaining loop on the riser needs to be changed or indeed the whole riser and toogles. Another thing i came across here is that you have smaller line on other canopys than the sigma. I think the hop has small dacron. We have used the twin 372 from paratec in ours. And it was possible to push the toogle to far into the loop. I added a really stiff material across the toogle just above the grommet to prevent the brake line coming to far.the brake line gets snagged around the lip where it is folded back below the grommet. When i get back to the loft later in the afternoon, i will try to upload a couple pictures. Rodger
  9. You learn something new every day. I was under the impression that once you reset the cypres 250 higher is stays like that until the unit switches off. I have just received a private email letting me know that this is not correct! it reset itself after that every jump apparently! I guess i should have read the manual more in detail. You learn something new everday! Thanks and cherrio stay safe and blue skies rodger
  10. I mostly do tandems these days.but i adjust my speed cypres 250 higher at the start of the day when i doo aff jumps. Maybe i am just getting old but i dont like pulling below 3000feet.
  11. I would agree with bill booth and raise the firing altitude of an aad. I would like to see it said at a 1000feet minimum. I dont think that there is a problem with the gear manufactoring. I have had 38 cut aways in my time and never had an issue with a reserve. I think it comes down to human error in most of those cases and not reacting to a situation in a timely manner. With modern canopys especially high performance canopys and eliptical canopys a jumper can loose a lot of height very fast. Some also subject a jumper a lot higher g force and takes them a fraction longer to get to the handles and pull them. Also a better chance thst a jumper will be a lot more unstable after a cutaway from an eliptical canopy and they wait a couple extra sec to get stable. Also i see a lot of gear that have there rsl removed. That also could save a fex extra lives. Also it could save a jumper, if he has a couple extra sec to clear a reserve bridle if he has somehow snagged it around himself after a cutaway. I think raising the firing height would be beneficial. And i also agree with john sherman that all main deployment heights should be raised by 500feet my 2 cent worth rodger
  12. hi, whats the make of the reserve? and are you sure there is only one jump on it? i would think that most riggers would not put a canopy that was used as a main at any stage, and place it back as a reserve.i think the rigger is correct and covering himself. i am not sure that it is written in any rule book, its more of an unwritten code for a rigger.although i might stand corrected on that. a possibility could be send it back to the manufacturer and let them inspected it and re-certify it. or find a master rigger that could do a stress test and porosity test on it. hope oyu get sorted rodger
  13. i agree, they belong to the reserve. if you order a new canopy for example from PD you are given the choice f you want french links or soft links.same as any other manufacturer
  14. I would suggest you email tonysuits direct and see what they say.
  15. Hi jeff, great job on the video. Thank you very much for that. I am sure that mosr riggers will find it very useful. I certainly did. Rodger
  16. QuoteTuesday morning when I get back to the office I will get one of our smallest rigs and make a short quick instructional video of doing the repair for you guys. Jeff thanks jeff that be really great and helpful rodger
  17. Hi all, i have inspected a few vectors at our dz today. I found the inspection easy enough to do. However i did find one rig where the top row of stiching was half way gone and broken. So since the service bulliten says any rigger can do the repair(although i am a master rigger) i stripped the rig down.removed the main aad and handles reserve etc, and no matter how i tried i could not get the rig under the mashine(singer 20)to do the repair. I tried it upside down, sideways etc no luck in getting it stiched. The only way i can see it done is to partially open the reserve tray. Or does anyone else have any ideas if a different mashine can be used? i think doing the repair is going to be very hard to do.so i have decided i am going to send it back to upt from ireland and let them do it. Did anyone try to see if they can get the repair done? and did you have any trouble? Rodger[email]
  18. its been a long time since i saw a surfair!! it was the first canopy i owned, i bought it second hand from a local jumper in ireland. it was made in france but PDF i believe, my size was a 220 and it loks simular size in the pic. i did about jumps on it,but after my 3 cutaway on it in that time i donated it to the BONFIRE i doubt you will have much sucess in trying to sell it,and its hard to tell from the pic what kind of container it is, but it doesnt look like a skydiving rig to me, i am guessing it might be a pilots rig. cherrio rodger
  19. 3 important points as mentioned before 1. pull 2.pull at correct height 3.pull stable. i know it can be dounting at the start, but if you stay nice relaxed, alti aware, keep your arch and have a nice smooth pull you taking so many bad things out of the equation. have a chat with your instructor and he will look after you. rodger
  20. hiya, i test jumped that combination recently and i got to say i loved it. nice smooth openings,no sign of tension knots. toggle pressure is a lot easier and the flare was great.got 2 stnad ups in nill winds. so i was very happy with it rodger
  21. here in ireland it is a 180 days - and i am a FAA Master Rigger. just a point i like to make, i would not pack any gear that did not have a TSO label on it. maybe i misread the thread and what was sayed.but i dont think any rigger would repack any gear without a TSO label C-23 at least but preferable D-23. rodger
  22. i dont have to many mirage systems over here,i think i have a total of 6.and just going through my rigging book, there is 3xcypres 1 and 3xcypres 2 units.i modified 2 of those rigs after the service bulletin. as i said before i find them a pain in the back side to reinstall them into a mirage rig as the cutter chanel can be very tight an akward.i know someone posted that they yse a flexi rod to get it back,i use cypres loop material fingertrap it through the cutter when i remove it and use the same method to reinstall it.but you have to be careful doing that so not to damage the cutter when trying to guide it back.also when i got a new mirage lately from a customer they used waxed thread instead of cypres loop material. looking at the pics and seeing the damage i think its fair to say that something caused that damage, since there is no damage to the reserve flap,i would say that some external force caused it. its just my guess that it might be during reinstallation or possibly as someone else said by kneeling on it. so that is my theory, not much help to you i think. however if you find out any more info i like to hear it. and your right this is a forum for riggers to share and help each other and get some very good information, everything else should be left outside this forum. rodger
  23. i have packed a few mirages with a cypes insde them.i have never seen that kind of damage. it looks to me from the pics that the cutter was badly bend at that point.it can be very though to install an aad in a mirage, they are a real ain in the bud. i certainly have taken many min to get the cutter installed after getting in serviced. i just had a look at a mirage container here, and where the damage is on the pics, that should be sitting just inside the elastic retainer loop for the cutter. did you have a inspect teh reserve container? was there any damage to the flap where the cutter is placed? so i am a bit baffled by the damage,my best guess would be it got damaged during the installation.
  24. this is a strange one,i would also expect some marking on the little ball.unfortunatley there is no other pics of this forgeign object. i find it a bit strange, they have lots of pics of the cutter and other cutter and the damaged it caused to the cutter, and just one pic of this foreign object which is not very good picture. also raises the question of how this object got caught up in the cutter in the first place and that it stayed there.
