  1. just an example of repetition, golf swing is a motion that takes repetition to learn, not a motion that is specifically useful for skydiving. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  2. It has been fascinating watching the evolution over the years; the moment that I always will remember on this forum is when Dean Potter flew a Tonysuit from the Eiger to Grindelwald, and Yuri_Base, after a long time of hating on the "mattress" suits, admitted that those huge thick suits with the long wing roots may be the future of high glide ratio WS. Yuri had all these software tools showing how the big suits faster starts gave them a big advantage. For a numbers guy like me it was pretty cool to see all the work he put into that. 4. One thing to consider is which format will be around longer. I went back to a car forum last year to check on some ideas for my 2004 subaru, and a lot of the older posts had links that were broken. Websites reformat occasionally, or they just sometimes shutdown. This place has been here for a long time, so keeping pictures and posts directly on the site is a good way to ensure they will be around for a while. (unless you get too many posts. so don't start a rumor that db cooper built his own parachute). 7. Yeah, I made one a few years ago, still am using it. Post here: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4308349#4308349 It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  8. One thing I'd like out of a manager is the ability to export to a file. This is especially true if I use autogenerated passwords. I'd store the file with a open source encryption like gpg on dropbox. I'd also be tempted to store them In a safe. probably shift the passwords by a character in the printout. That way if the manager took a shit I would not be sol. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  9. I don't use a power tool, but the only criticism I have heard about them is they can be used to close tight rigs that are really too tight and should not be closed. But that is more of a user issue than the tool itself. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  10. I'm getting tired of trying to manage passwords. I have been using chrome's built in one, but it does not always offer to add them automatically, and ito is a pain to get ones into it manually. any recommendations? Lastpass seems popular. 11. If you watch the landing video, you can see the thrusters on the top of the rocket firing trying to keep the it upright, but in vain as it toppled anyway. I remember reading a quote from Musk saying the only way to make the reuse viable was landing the rocket right where it took off, but that takes a lot more propellant to fly it back over there, so maybe they realized that the barge was a better option, or maybe the eventual goal will be to dispense with the barge? 12. Sounds intriguing. Are you using any statistical techniques like Kalman filters to characterize your sensors and to do the integration? I like the idea of detecting the start of deployment and holding off, I agree the jumper has shown that they realize the skydive is over, and are trying to stop it. You could have a jumper that gets a bag lock and rides it to the ground wondering what to do, so at some point the AAD may want to step in. I do believe that an AAD should not completely "deactivate" on main deployment. I use an RSL, so I don't ever anticipate needing an AAD after main deployment, but in case I had it disconnected, (CReW, some other reason) and I cut away and ended up in freefall without the ability to pull the reserve, I would like my AAD to fire, if my cutaway was high enough. Experienced people without RSLs and AADs cutway and go in every so often, it is the primary argument for wearing an RSL, but sometimes you need a backup. This smart AAD may also be better about detecting a swoop vs. freefall, and not fire based on the situation, rather than the fact that the canopy was already deployed. 13. Can you comment on the sensor types you will be using in your multi-channel approach? I think accelerometers are most likely, and GPS unlikely? How about a 3 axis gyro? One problem that accelerometers may address is the burble issue. Overcoming the difference in firing heights between belly and other orientations would make people more comfortable about increasing their firing altitudes. Using sensor fusion could also prevent/reduce two-outs by realizing that the characteristics of a deployment sequence were already in effect, and ignoring or delaying the activation sequence (still have to fire in a bag lock). I think this would also make people more comfortable in increasing firing altitudes. Seth It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  14. are you sure you understand how your AAD works ? I assume lyosha is talking about either a loss of altitude awareness wingsuit flight, when the pilot passes below 750ft in full flight, or in a "where's the hacky" fumble position where the descent rate will be higher, but not 78 mph. What were you thinking he meant? It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".

  16. Yes, you ought to. But sometimes you don't. I guess the ramifications of quitting depend on how serious you were about your goal. Some years you may start the year saying "I'm going to PR some big race", and you will commit to train hard to do it. If you bail, yes you are letting yourself down. But another year you may say "I'm not committing to anything other than enjoying my time on this earth." Training / racing may be a part of that year too, but bailing on a given workout / race is not as big a deal, because you don't have a big goal. That is what I take from Nat's "nothing to prove" comment. She is in the "we are here to have fun" mode. Doesn't mean she will soon be living in a van down by the river. 17. I'm obviously not Nat, but I will say I can sympathize. I have certainly had training runs where I got partway through and thought "It is not happening today, I am turning around and packing it in." Never done that in a race yet, but I could see doing that one day. People sign up for things way in advance, and in the mean time attitudes and mindsets, energy levels can change. Some days just are not your day. Like Adele Dazeem sang "Let it go" and move on. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  18. No, I had no idea that one existed. I just installed it, and it is a little more polished. I do like the ability that mine has and that one lacks, that you can see which posts have been blocked, and show/hide a single post that has been ignored/blocked without unblocking the user. Clearly some drama behind the app name, I see when it installed it came with "robinheid" blocked by default. 20. I did something I wanted to do for a while and put together a post /user blocking filter for DZ.com. It is a TamperMonkey / GreaseMonkey script. I have only tested it in Google Chrome, but it should work in Firefox and Safari. The image shows how things look once it is running. Individual posts can be hidden or shown, or all a users posts can be hidden. A list of blocked users is saved locally so should be persistent. Click the "RU" (Remove User) next to a username to add them to the block list and hide all their posts. Show a post and then click "Restore User" to remove the user from the block list. Tampermonkey Extension for Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/dhdgffkkebhmkfjojejmpbldmpobfkfo My post blocking script: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/8541-dz-com-post-blocker It is based loosely off another post-blocker I found on GreasyFork, and uses jQuery. I just wanted to play around with jQuery and JavaScript. If you have suggestions / bugs let me know, or if you want to make changes that would be great too. It would only take some minor changes to the website layout to break the script, but it hasn't changed in a long time... 22. The thought had occurred to me that by the time I get to 50 years, there won't be a paper mag. I am sure it will disappear sometime before then, but it may be a while; people like their paper magazines. 23. If I was in the skydiving biz, I would not have a problem giving back to the community, but I would like to decide how that giving back is done. Maybe I have a "give back/charity" allocated pool that I use to fund safety day raffles, leap for lupus raffles, etc. Maybe I would like that extra $10 bucks a year to go into that pile than the free magazines for retired skydivers pile. Everything has a cost, every dollar has plenty of awesome ways it can be used by USPA or its members to give back to the community. I am all for honoring members who have put in 50 years, but I am not sure decades of magazines is the best way. I have only been a member for 10 years, but if I get to 50, I would like to think I stay a member till I die, and pay my dues every year knowing that sending in the money means I am still pulling my weight and contributing to the sport I love. sdc It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  24. ...Unless of course the advertisements, based on circulation numbers, cause those magazines to be profitable or break even to the USPA. I wondered the cost of the magazine, anyone from the USPA want to share the Consolidated Financial Statements mentioned in the meeting minutes but not published with them. ;-) As an advertiser I would not be excited paying higher ad rates to fund magazines sent to people who were no longer in the sport, as I suspect most people with 50+ years of membership are or will be soon. This would be even more true of people who were not paying anything (more) for the magazine, cause who knows if they are even reading it. 25. I got mixed feelings about this. 50 years of dues is a lot of $, but USPA should be applying all of that to functions that you as a member are benefiting from. Now once you get 40-50 years as a member, you are probably 60-80 years old and with a converted lifetime membership could be another 10-30+ years of magazines for free. I don't want to support a bunch of people getting free magazines for decades. The lifetime buy is different. By chipping in $2500 up front, USPA SHOULD be able to invest the money and even subtracting regular annual dues withdrawals, through the magic of compound interest be able to easily cover as long a period as you would want to live, so no one is getting anything for "free". So IMHO, if you want to get Parachutist for the rest of your life, pony up the $ up front, otherwise pay the annual fee. Of course the smart play would be to invest the $2500 yourself, pay your dues out of that, so when USPA pisses you off, you can cancel your membership and spend the investment on some hookers and blow.
