  1. interesting how jokes get customized. I heard it with grizzly / black bears and it works better that way I think. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  2. I don't understand why you and billvon think this was a rotor not a dust devil. The conditions for each to form are very different, one is no-wind to light surface winds, the other requires strong surface winds. From the way the canopy drops after landing winds are light. Not all dust devils have to be huge, and clipping the side of one seems reasonable. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  3. In seriousness, one nice activation model that would leverage your solar panel would be to only send updates when the device is in the light (and moving, or was in the light and then moved, etc). In that way, a skydiver could attach the bug to his canopy bag with a clear window. The bag is closed up in the container after packing, so it would only be exposed to light once the parachute is deployed. This would save on battery. In another direction, I like the idea of attaching it to a pilot chute. It looks about the size of a freefly pud, you could make a zippered bag for it as the PC handle. Easy to charge / move between containers. Just remember not to jump when it is not in the bag... 4. Ha Ha! I like the ransomware business model. Me: I lost my canopy, I have not paid my subscription in forever, can you tell me where it is? Them: for 5$ we will tell you the last time it send a position. Me: Ok. (pays) Them: we heard from it 10 min ago. for $5 we will tell you if it knows where it is. Me: Ok (pays) Them: it knows where it is. For $50 you can know within 5ft, or for $10 within 200 ft. Me: I'll try for $10. (pays) gets coord. Shit that in the deep woods. I will need a better fix. Them: $50 please. Me. ok (pays) It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  5. The website link does give a lot more information. The device has a GPRS cell radio with world wide capability that will connect with the cloud based tracking service. There is a $60.00 a year subscription cost in addition to the device cost, and that give you access to the tag location from anywhere. The bluetooth direct connection can also be used to help locate the device. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".

  7. You are lucky, not all unions are that way. My wife is in a teachers union, and sure 15 years ago it was no deductible & no premiums, but not now. I think we could have a low / no deductible plan through her work, but the premiums would be like $6K more than we pay now. No thanks. 8. That is some grim humor right there. The "out of network" concern is scary. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  9. A short tale of the challenge of finding out how much I would have to pay for an MRI (the US health care system is weird). Back in July I was having some low back issues, doctor recommended an MRI. Since I have an health plan with a $8k deductible, I wondered how much I would have to pay for it. First I called the hospital where the MRI was scheduled. I gave them the code for the procedure, they said it would be $2300, but to get the price I would pay I would have to call the insurance company. I called the insurance company (BlueCross/BlueShield). I was told they can’t tell me what the cost will be, I have to call the hospital. Then I found the bc/bs website had a "estimate costs" link so logged in with my plan code. Searched prices for MRI, found it was $342.00 . I called bc/bs back and asked them about the website. They had no idea it existed. The day before the MRI I got a call from the hospital. They said they estimated my cost at $1743 for the procedure, based on my insurance coverage. I asked her why the bc/bs website said $342. She did not know, she did say bc/bs will also factor in an additional in-network discount but she could not tell me what that was, so the actual payment would be less than $1743, but not $342. So I had the MRI, and yesterday I finally got the bill. Total cost before in-network adjustment :$2688. After in-network adjustment, I had to pay $336, which is like 87% off the "list" price, which is crazy, and it just strikes me as odd that even though the hospital and ins. co. must have negotiated the rates, no person at either facility had access to that information. I am really happy I only had to pay $336 for an MRI, and I am sure glad I found someone made a website with accurate prices so I knew that upfront. 10. I still remember years ago when I had about your number of jumps, I drove 40min to the dz, walked in through one door, walked toward manifest but I was too freaked out to sign up, walked out the other door, back in my car and drove home. Then next weekend I drove down again, but signed up. So I think I can understand some of your fears, and lots of people have similar issues. Switching DZs while still a student certainly adds more stress. My advice is to do some more jumps with an instructor. It's good practice and a good instructor can help you focus on tasks and eventually you will find your fears subside. 12. Thanks for the review. I jump a Sabre2 135 at ~1.5, so nice to get a review of a similar size and wingloading. Post up the Crossfire3 if you try it. Seth It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".

  14. There is another total eclipse for the Continental us in 2024. Looks like start Skydiving and aerohio in OH are in the path of totality. Make your plans now! It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".

  16. Priceless, perfect set up and execution. Yeah. That one wins the "DZ.com bad pun/inside joke of the year". Nicely done Mr. V. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  17. Skydive Flying V Ranch west of St. Louis (Van Pray Jr. drop zone with the turbine 206) is in the path of totality. They are doing a special eclipse load. The load is full. Seth It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  18. http://www.borderherald.com/tainted-buffet-jacksonville-strip-club-blamed-severe-diarrhea-incident-stage/ A new way to "make it rain". [edit to add: I saw this on FB, but borderherald.com looks like a generic news aggregator, so I have no idea how true this is...still funny though] It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  19. There is a bluetooth music player in a pouch on my shoe, you can just see it on the edge of the pic. My other shoe that is not visible also has a pouch, with a tiny mylar coverup for before and after the race until I could meet up with the person with my clothes. I will also add that my ultimate minimalist effort would be a barefoot naked run. I have skydived naked, and skydived barefoot, but not at the same time, so I still have that to do. Also with running, I have run barefoot (a little) and obviously run naked, but putting them together would be a nice achievement. No place for a music player then though. I definitely would run with a partner to carry my shit. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".

  21. I ran the Bay to Breakers last Saturday. Now I'm no post whore, and I'm not sure how much glory is in this pic, but it sure was a lot of fun to do. Now not many people know this went down, and so I'm curious, since this site is pretty quiet these days, how many skydivers who know me in real life will see this. 22. thanks tim. Your advice confirmed what we were thinking, now we'll skip Milford and go to Doubtful Sound instead, should be a little more quiet. So its, Fox Glacier, Queenstown, Doubtful Sound, Dunedin, ChristChurch. No skydiving for me, but I'll do the Nevis Bungy, it appeals to my sense of history to do a bungy in the place that invented it. 24. This is for the Kiwis on here, or anyone else with an opinion... The wife and I are travelling to NZ Christmas 2017. Dec 26-Jan 6. She works for the schools, and that is the only time available for us to visit in the NZ summertime. We will be spending all our time on the south island. We are wondering what if any planning we should do to account for that time of year. Are certain places packed with people? Are most touristy things open Jan 1 or Jan 2? Anyone with any NZ travel experiences please share. Thanks, Seth It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  25. No it does not, it says exactly the same thing. "Life goes on." That is the summary. I support Bill's statement. If someone dies jumping, whether or not jumping continues should be an individual choice. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
