  1. ...like the first drogue...Yes, the same drogue that Mr. Strong brought to the USA after made contact with Soviet Smokejumpers in early ´80s... The first drogue system was proposed by Gleb Kotelnikov. In 1940, Igor Glushkov designed the first operational drogue, and Stanislav Karamishev designed the lock between drogue and Harness/Container System... ...But was the great engineer Nikolay Lobanov who designed the drogue system as we use today. Lobanov was a very good parachute engineer and designed the "square canopy", instead the normal "round. This particular change provided no need to anti-inversion nets, easier construction, and a higher envelope at opening speed. Thanking the time, and effort done to understand my poor English, and hoping to have expanded your mind, Blue Skies, and safe Skydives! Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  2. With all my due respect to all the Persons who have posted about AAD, I must inform you that The Doronin Brothers (three brothers) invented the World´s first AAD. Please, let me explain You: In 1936, after the death of 2 famous soviet parachutists, Tamara Ivanova, and Lyuba Berlin, the USSR Government issued a prize for an Automatic Opener for Parachutes. The Commission reviewed more than 300 inventions, winning Doronin´s device. It was called PPD-1, and entered in service with the VDV (Soviet Parachute Forces) in 1938. During the Second World War the Doronin Brothers put in service a lot of devices relating Parachute openers, cargo devices, and a large etcetera.( For example, the first canopy Quick release for Static-line paratropers, and the first canopy release for airdrop cargoes, between other 30 inventions with other soviet engineers, like the first drogue...Yes, the same drogue that Mr. Strong brought to the USA after made contact with Soviet Smokejumpers in early ´80s). The PPD-1 had problems with the straight arming pin, so the designers replaced it for a flexible one in PPD-2. In 1941 a very good engineer called Leonid Savichev designed the PAS-1, introducing, for the first time in the World, an Aneroid Capsule system. Thank to this feature, the jumper could jump out of an airplane without became worried about the pilot was flying at the correct altitude... Higher or lower, The device would activate at the predetermined Pressure... So, like a rudimentary CYPRES, but 50 years earlier. In 1949 the USSR Government, afraid of these 4 great designers competency, ordered Savichev join Doronin´s factory, now called 2MPZ (www.2mpz.ru), and issued a new requeriment for automatic openers in order to replace all the others. From these orders were designed the following devices: PPD-10, the last chronometric device from Doronin´s. capable of freefall up to 10 seconds KAP-1, designed for the Soviet Air Force Requeriments KAP-2, designed for the VDV requeriments. KAP-3, designed for a multipurpose device. AD-3, a chronometric device for mass dropping, and emergency parachutes. So, I must report to Your Person that When Mr Snyder designed the Sentinel, there were a second generation of AAD, all fully operational, and working, from civilian weekend parachutists to all the first Cosmonauts...All of them relied on Doronin and Savichev inventions. KAP-3 was a Second generation Soviet device, entered in Active duty in 1949, and was replaced in 1970 for the PPK-U System. Currently, the PPK-U System is being replaced for the SKIFF. Thanking the time, and effort done to understand my poor English, and hoping to have expanded your mind, Blue Skies, and safe Skydives! Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  3. Dear Sir, It has been very glad to hear such good news. A very hard work, and time consuming effort. Thank You all your team; hopefully I would learn a lot from the archive files. Best regards, and Blue Skies, Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  4. Dear Mr. Lemaire, Thank You very much for the info. I already have information regarding all these products You mentioned, except the SKIFF (waiting for my VDV russian comrade-in-arms to obtain info), and the chinese AAD´s. But there is a lot of AAD´s out there, apart of the abovementioned, and these are the quid of the question, its Story, patents, prototypes, diagrams, etc, harder to obtain without official aid from its manufacturers. Thanking all your time, and effort, Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  5. Dear Sir, Thank You very much for your interest, and help. A PM has been sent Best regards, Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  6. I must report that the expected distribution date, July 2014, will be delayed due I have received nor official, nor unofficial information from any of the AAD manufacturers, except: Airtec Aviacom Advanced Aerospace designs So, it will take harder, and longer to obtain, assemble, and translate all the information to 3 languages without support. I Hope the Skydive Community understand. Best regards, and safe skydives. Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  7. Hi Deyan! Please, try this link: www.survivalaids.com/product2.php?subcat=498 The store is located in the UK. Best regards, Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  8. Dear Sir, The L.I.I. (In-Flight Test Center), located in Moscow, was in charge of testing all the feasible escape methods for the crew members in any new aircraft, before put in service with the VVS (Soviet Air Force). At the IL-28 first flight time, in 1948, the personnel in charge of performing those test were S. Anokhin, P. Eremeev, D. Seliverstov, P. Sovtsov, A. Petsukh, B. Godovikov, A. Dobahov, G. Malinvsky, F. Samoshin, Doronin Brothers and V.G. Romanyuk, so any of those highly respected and qualified test jumpers could done that particular jump that year, before the aircraft passed all government test. Sorry for my scarce information, but I can not access to the Official Record Files. Best regards Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  9. Dear Sir, I would suggest that Your Person put in contact with Icarus canopies, due the aftermarket service in Europe is superb, and the personnel is highly qualified, but remember to send: - Canopy model - Size - Manufacture Date There are slight differences between Icarus Canopies made in Europe, or in New Zealand. Best regards, Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  10. Dear Deyan, Yes, Talka, but I supposed Lesnik 1 had the same configuration, Is it that right? Thank You for your error correction Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  11. Dear Sir, If the parachute system is rigged into a "Vector-like" Harness-container system, it must be a soviet Lesnik parachute, used in some Smoke Jumper organizations. If it comes rigged into a front-and-back configuration, it could be a PTL-72, UT-15, D-5, or others, used, too, by Smoke Jumper. For your information, the KZU (Soviet 3-ring) functionality is identical to the normal 3-ring release system, but the soviet designers turned to the "Western" due compatibility issues. Hoping to have aided, Best regards Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe

  13. Dear Sir, Thank You very much for your links. I already have checked them 2-3 years ago, containing very basic information for begin with. Best regards, Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  14. Dear Sir, Thank You very much for your interest. All the information contained in the former book is going to be translated to English, Russian, and Spanish, plus the current research work. If Your Person may wait until 2014, you will be able to read it, for free, as education must be. Blue Skies Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  15. Dear Sir, Thank You very much for your interest. If Your Person have downloaded the file, you will notice that there is a lot of information to add. Personally, I think education must be free, in order to let the Skydiving Community to grow safer. This is the reason why the next research work will be made in English, Russian, and Spanish languages Blue Skies from Spain Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  16. A Historical research work on Automatic Activation Devices (AAD´s) topic. I am asking for veteran riggers´ help, who will concern, and became interested in, contribute with expertise, and information regarding old western AAD, American, British, and French made, ranging from 1930-1970 years, like: Irvin´s apparatuses Bailout military AAD´s used during Second World War French first AAd, like EFA-70 etc Of course, all the information, and media will be credited I already sent a kindly formal request information to the current AAD makers companies. After information is granted, it would be labeled making a “History Chapter”, introducing each Manufacturer from its origins to the Present date, and adding all the provided data in a chronological sequence, putting together all the historical chapters, obtaining thus a book. This particular book would be a non-for-profit one, written in three languages (English, Russian, and Spanish), and freely distributed in digital format (.pdf), coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the World´s first AAD activation (PPD-1, on July 22nd 1939, jumped by V.G. Romanyuk) July 22nd 2014. I have put in contact, via E-mail, with russian comrade-in-arms from VDV, and they have expressed their will to provide their available data, offered help with translating from Russian to English, and checking for grammatical errors, too. So, do not worry about information relating Advanced Aerospace Designs s.a, Airtec GmbH, Aviacom s.a, due they will help to make possible this publication, with data, and error checkings. Some time ago, perhaps 2-3 years ago, I made the same request, publishing a non-for-profit book titled: “Automatic Activation Devices, 75th Anniversary from its actual idea” (Sorry, only in Spanish). If anybody can have a look to it, there is a free download link (click over “Descargar” green coloured word, located right from .pdf icon): http://www.bubok.es/libros/207351/EQUIPOS-DE-ACTIVACION-AUTOMATICA-DE-PARACAIDAS-75-ANIVERSARIO-19362011 As You will notice, there is a great gap to fill with information on this topic. Thanking all your aid To Moderators: If Your Person consider to remove download link due website policy, please, do that. Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe

  19. Dear Sir, If Using Safari: Click with the Finder Arrow onto the http bar, and push Enter. You can do the same thing with Command+R. No solution, it is Mac OS X Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  20. Dear Sir, The technique is quite simple, but if You have any doubt, please contact with a local rigger, or look for it at Pointer´s Parachute Manual: - Check main canopy, filling the Damage Chart, and doing the Line Check. - Put the canopy on the floor, or packing table, in a lateral manner, like the first step for performing a Side Pack, air intakes together, A Lines one above other, B, C, and D Lines, the same procedure; Steering lines together. - Roll, instead of pack, the Noise, or Air intakes, into A, and up to B Lines. Roll into the Tail into D Lines, and up to C Lines. - Disassembly the suspension lines from the suspension bands, using a Line Checking board. - Make a Daisy Chain up to the canopy, putting the lines between the rolls. - Continue rolling for secure the Daisy Chain. Make the adecuate vertical folds needed for insert the canopy into the delivery package. - Include Damage Chart Remember: A canopy is from the airfoil to the suspension line Links, Maillon rapide, soft Links..., included. You must not delivery with the Steering toggles, due they become part of the Harness/container System. Hoping to have aided a bit Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  21. Dear Sir, With all my due respect, I must inform to your Person that making a pair of booties for each jumpsuit is a time consuming effort which it does not deserve, except if You are plenty of time, or these pieces of garment have special value for You. As a Repair Person, it takes nearly 4 hours for disassemble the legs, plus measurement of legs, with your current skydiving shoe/boot/sport shoe. After that, make a new bootie, with the adecuate air chambers, air intakes, internal reinforcements, and crossports (Yes, Crossports between each conforming cell of the bootie), place the zipper, and safety, another 4 hours. A total of 8 hours of work, at 50 EUR/h, totaling a 400 EUR will help You to make a wise choice... And Order a New Custom-order jumpsuit. Please, remember that not all things are so easy as look like at first glance. Hoping to have aided Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  22. Dear Linn, If You are writing your thesis about Skydiving safety, I would recommend You think global. Please, remember that the first AAD´s were designed, and manufactured in 1936, in the former USSR. If You do not know who were Leonid Savichev, nor Doronin´s Brothers, You have a lot of investigation work to do. If You send a PM, I will send You a recently published book on AAD (75th Anniversary). It is written in Spanish, but, if You find useful, I can translate to English. Hoping to helping on Your thesis, Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  23. To the Person who will concern, I absolutely agree with Mr. Lou Diamond answer. The AR-2 (WAR-2 if it is Waterproof) is, by no means, a reliable, and safe device for jump device. Operation margins ar well above factory presets, and requires an expert handling, and supervision. Any wrong input can result in activation after 3 seconds from aircraft exit, or reserve activation within main opening sequence, resulting in a dangerous situation to deal with. I strongly recommend to use any of the proven AAD on the market today. As a Rigger it is not correct to "sell" any of them. It is your choice. If You continue to prefer mechanical over electronic, may expand your requests to the Irvin FF-2 Hitefinder, the Irvin FF-2S if You only need to release a main, or a drogue, FXC-12000, KAP-3P, or PPK-U devices (More then 30 models Sold in Russian Federation). All of them will give You "Peace of Mind" if are well operated, and serviced. Hoping to have expanded your horizon Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  24. Dear Sir, With all my due respect, I must report to Your Person that pictures from that jump are rare. Please, May You think for a while that It was 1935!. After translating Lyuba Berlin´s Book from Russian, I may report that, as Lyuba Appointed, there were two or three Soviet men who did glider jumps before Her. At first glance, An educated Person would thought about Leonid Grigorievich Minov, Yakov Davidovich Moshkovsky, Viktor Nikolaevich Evseev, Nabi Aminovich Amintaev, Evdokimov, Kaitanov, Gulnik, Romanyuk, all of them instructors from the N.I.I. who became the VDV´s Core. Nevertheless, If You are plenty of time, You may learn some Russian, or use a translator, Person or software, and enjoy thousands of pages from Krasnaya Zvezda Newspaper, dating from 1929 to June 1935 (in this particular case, which is the first glider jump). You may, too, find some information on the Russian Air Force Website, at: http://www.airforce.ru/staff/berlin/index.htm Please, remember that early parachuting, or Skydiving in Europe was strongly favored by Governments like USSR, Italy, and Germany, much before Second World War. For Example, there were AAD on active duty before WWII started. Hoping to have expanded your Horizon Juan Fraile-Nuez Military Parachute Rigger (ret.) Spain, Europe
  25. Dear Pasi, You are true, Lyuba Berlin mede the first world female jump from a glider on May 30th 1935. At that time She became part of "the Magnificent Six". Unfortunately She died, with Tamara Ivanova on a freefall jump in 1936. All of us should deserve our gratitude to Lyuba Berlin, Tamara Ivanova, and Nadezhna Babushkina. Thank to their sacrifice Doronin´s Brothers invented the first AAD in History, the PPD-1, in 1938, entering in service in the Soviet Airborne Forces in 1939.
