  1. hooked up backwards? Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  2. I could be wrong but I really doubt the runway has anything to do with it, FULL FULL LOAD on a HOT HOT humid day last summer and the otters at SDC still did not come anywhere near needing the whole runway. other then the pilot watching his ass I dont think the length of available runway has anything to do with max take off weight REGULATIONS ... again I could be wrong Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  3. The reserve Slider was packed down. According to Bill himself the silder in a low speed cutaway like this would have made 30ft dif max(his words I KNOW SQUAT) and by HIS best estimates from the video, the cutaways were performed between 90 and 110ft AGL with one of the jumpers getting his toggles out and flaring!! Both jumpers were experienced BASE jumpers and insisted on pulling the cutaway that low. I would imagine Bill would have liked 150+ ... he also mentioned that one of his demo jumpers doing Skyhook demos got a little complacent and was just pulling the cutaway handle. and in at least 1 instance found himself in free fall with nothing happening... found silver and no problems. but a good thing to remember NOTHING works ALL the time. That said my next rig will have a skyhook.. but I'm not in the market for a new rig for a while. Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  4. Where would you put the Lotus(or if you've seen the reline the Lotus "max") in that compairson I have my novice thoughts but I'll keep them to myself for now Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  5. Um yes he did break the sound barrier, yes the value of the "sound barrier" is dependent on atmosphere lower pressure = slower speed of sound, yes there is sound in space ... just not conducted at all in the VACUME of space Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  6. I'd guess your excluding the military jumper who broke the sound barrier jumping from a balloon at the edge of the atmosphere? Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  7. I've red Bill's account of the second video, but is it known what caused the reserve to open on the porter vid? Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  8. so I'm ... uncurrent to say the least. The regs say I need a coach jump to be current. I know people with coach ratings who will do this with me for free (at most when I offer to cover their slot they MIGHT take the offer) but another DZ I'm considering told me I would need a coach jump and it would run me 70 bucks .. the point of the post are my questions... 1 Is this what I should expect. 2 Is this a reasonable price 3 IF a coach rated firend wants to do the jump with me should I worry about stepping on toes with the DZs instructors I would otherwise have to pay 4 Should I expect or be supprised if the dropzone wont clear me for the coach jump with firend coach and insist on their coach? 9. D in the US changed from 200... to 500 (I THINK) Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  10. this is one reason why I'm glad my best friends and family don't jump. For any skydiver I'll try my best till I gotta leave, 2k sounds like a good place but I've never been in free fall that low so self preservation might take me out early (get scared and pull)... for Family or my best friends .. I'm there till my cypres pulls me ... or I hit with them. There are some people on this earth that I would not want to live knowing I let them go, even if it was hopeless. now I'm not counting on my cypres here, infact if it opened while i was still trying I'd probably curse its very existance. The worst part is I KNOW I don't have the skill to catch and save anyone. so IF I jump with close friends I will encourage them to be as trained as possible, with safe gear, ... come to think of it I like to see these qualties in everyone I jump with Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  11. do you know something the rest of us don't... I seem to see some writing between your lines (understand I am in no way related to the DZ or rigs in question and mean on offense) Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  12. I would normally wait till I go to SDC to get my rig inspected and reserve repacked ... but the weather is so nice today. If I get the chance to jump soon I would really like to have my rig in date. SO if you are a rigger, or you know a rigger NEAR Madison WI let me know please (pm) unless you wanna brag on your skills or this rigger you love. the please feel free. Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  13. Mind giving some specs? Stall speed glide ratio etc.. I know all of these are dependent on the weight/drag of the pilot ... but ball park numbers? Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  14. Would you please fill out your profile .. only then can we read what you say and then reply to it Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  15. I'd like to think that in the event that I was aware and in control enough at 750ft, having already tried EVERYTHING, and I do mean everything multiple times I'd be stable calm and hoping my cypres saved my ass ... but the more likely acitvity will me flapping my arms and spraynig blood form my destroyed fingers (which I would have destroyed trying to CLAW my pack open) If I pulled at say 3k reguardless of the mal or total, going red/silver should at the worst eat up 1k (even if its a slow mal I fight to 2k before chopping) 2k to 750ft even if you start under a slow mal so you not at freefall speed to begin with is not enough time for me to try everything twice .. or more, give up and try to go stable for the cypres. 16. This may seem a dumb question ... but how do you hook up a main 90deg wrong? I'm sure it can't be done at the 3rings ... do you connect the A/B lines to one riser and the C/D/steeringlines to the other? Seeing both toggles to one riser would be a big clue right? unless I'm missing something 90 degrees off sounds impossible to do accidently .. sounds trickey to do Intentinally Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  17. you mean so that the leading edge will face behind you on opening? ... pack ... I dont think so .. hookup yes, put the R riser on your L shoulder 3ring and vise versa. but I don't think you can land one one jump and then pack so that the next jump will have you flying backwards without releasing and re setting the 3 rings... BUT I AM NOT A RIGGER, and I don't have a lot of experience Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  18. accident or no, anyone worried about a Vigil in a tandem rig being switched to expert? or student? I check my cypers before every jump ... its hard to miss being right next to where I check by Reserve pin. Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  19. ok ok good point, people do this ... people do stupid stuff, however please don't lump all people in the same catagory because you can find examples of stupid (or at least ignorant) actions on the part of in DUH viduals ... In the first instance though the post claims she tried with both hands and was unable to pull the reserve ... hard pull? maybe she was dead without the cypres. In the others ..... well some divers should be involved in a sport with a heavy ball and 10 pins, at least until they seekout and get proper training ... and even then some will still find a way to get their skull up past their sphincter.. I'm glad when they do we get to mock the stupid or ignorant .. and in somecases the unluckey to their face insted of posthumusly. Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  20. (NOT DIRECTED AT ANYONE) this is just a thought... No more annalogies, here it is YOU HAVE TO USE A PARACHUTE TO SKYDIVE the rules here in the USA say you have to use a reserve... I CHOOSE to use a cypres ... On Every jump ... because I have that option, I CHOOSE to wear my seatbelt ... If cypres was banned or did not exist I would still jump. I turn it on and forget about it ... and if I need it I hope it works, personally I hope mine is retired never having been tested. BUT WHEN(if) THE SH>T hits the fan I would rather have 1 more roll of the dice .. wouldnt you? There is no shame in choosing to have a back up. THERE IS GREAT SHAME in jumping from a plane and willfully doing nothing and requireing a backup device to live.. THATS IT right there. Turn it on and forget it, I do if you don't believe it THATS YOUR PROBLEM stop trying to tell me whats in my head. IF you have ever actually said Well this is so ass stupid I'm likely to die .. but I've got a cypres so its cool .. stay the Fu
  21. Anyone have one? Opinion? did you get it off E-bay? anyone have contact info for them? Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  22. Thats not true there is more energy involved in 2 cars hitting each at 60 than either car would feel alone at 60 into a wall... on the other hand hitting a car will give you more time to decelerate and more vectors for the carsto move through to bleed off the enery. That been said A volvo dealer and BMW dealer in washington state each used to have a wrecked example of their products (a BMW 5 series and I forget the volvo model) brand new cars had hit head on each doing over 55(unknown how much over) both drivers WALKED AWAY Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  23. bwahahahahah... I'm not crazy .... the doctor says I can have silverware again. The great thing about a tandem is for you to burn in you instructor has to go with you, and as a professional it would hurt his reputation, make it difficult to continue working that day ... oh and make him dead, which he has made a profession of avoiding. Staticline or AFF on the other hand ... Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  24. according to pd speed is effected very little by shape given about equal loading and equal trim same number of cells ect, shape will make faster turns Degrees per second and more alt loss in feet decended per second ... so I'm told I've yet to jump anything but the almost square ... Tapered ... etc Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
  25. Ethics have NOTING to do with THIS aspect of a market economy. DONT LIKE THE PRICE GO ELSEWHERE. Unethical would be doing the packjob for a quoted price and then demanding more money before handing the rig back. Or in some fantacy loft in the sky charging more because the flying loft is gonna crash and the jumper has no choice but to pay or die. The comment about the ford mechanic charging more for the chevy is right on.. its not gonna put you outta biz its gonna get you a rep as a FORD SPECIALIST, There is nothing wrong with charging the same rate for all rigs even though some are REALLY REALLY eazy for you to pack. Unethical would be doing a shitty job on one kind of reserve because your bad at it ..but thankfully I don't know a rigger that would do that. Ethics get dragged into TOO MANY disscussions. Ask about Fair (and then clarify, fair to customer, rigger or both?) Ask about good biz practice, proffit rep, rigger's interiest in staying in the sport. Jumpers interiest in working with that rigger again etc. But as I said at the top before I went off Ethics got Nothing to do with this discussion Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.
