  1. You do realize that this little action is making the terrorists happy? ANYTHING to upset/disturb the status quo of America is their aim. Saying that tearing up Meigs Field to prevent terroism makes as much sense as tearing down a school because there may be a pediphile in the area. (Maybe Daley will start that policy next week) Daley finally got the TFR over the city - but a good portion of Ohare traffic flies directly over downtown for final approach. It took Daley almost a week of public media bashing to get the TFR, I doubt they will be sending AWACs our way anytime soon. Also, as Chris pointed out - no more tower looking over the city. Nor, is there a support infrastructure for emergency vehicles (lifeflight). And the airport was also used as a staging ground for airborne construction projects in recent years. This is a HUGE hit to the already failing Chicago economy. For those that are not from the area - within a 5 minute walk from the airport is the largest convention center in the country - and a good amount of convention traffic arrived via Meigs field. If you check out http://friendsofmeigs.org/ you will find several articles that talk about how the airport helped with public safety, and how it increased safety with VFR traffic. If you lived in Chicago, you would understand just how much BS this whole thing is. For years the Mayor has been trying to make the entire lakefront a park - this includes Meigs. The Govenor and the Mayor had a very vocal and media driven fued over this. Acting this way at 1am is a thug/goon tactic. I am all for making this country safe - but not at the expense of everything that makes America as great as it is. It seems that certain people, legislature, and organizations are hell-bent to start up a police state to enforce safety. Daley has lost my vote. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  2. Internet radio - you don't need to pay for it like XM radio. But I like XM & Sirius and would get it if I had the cash to spend on it. Plenty of legal free music out there in MP3 format as well....or there is always the P2P route. Get a MP3 player for the car. Why do you need radio? They censor music, play commercials, rarely play deep cuts anymore, and if you went to R&R, FMQB or even Billboard you would see every station in the same format across the country play the same exact songs. Ever since the deregulation of the market in the early 90's radio has gone to hell. You have syndication giving you the same talk-radio views, same cookie cutter DJ's telling the same jokes and sound clips from joke lists they subscribe to. It will only get worse as the FCC is in the process of changing its rules again. You will have less variety in the future as 3-4 companies will own all the stations in the country (much like TV - and how much variety and cutting edge shows do you see on Broadcast TV anymore). All the old, family run stations in the country were bought out years ago - and the market survey research is saying how every single station should sound like. Until something similar to cable-TV for radio becomes a standard, the standardization of radio stations will only get worse. The stations that allowed the cutting edge entertainment that produced the best radio talent over the years, or those stations that played songs outside of the Top 40 are a thing of the past. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 6. It never worked on my Intellivision, and it never worked on my NES. Once a game went - it went for good. I still miss the extreme dodgeball game on the NES, as well as bump n jump on Intellivision. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 9. IIRC - Brian made the Lotus so the non-eliptical market had airlocks. From the 4 or 5 jumps I made on the Lotus, it seemed it was in the same arena as the Sabre 2. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 11. Jumped this weekend - think it was 25F on the ground. If it was colder, I still would have gone up - I know that John Kallend was on the coldest jump I have ever done a couple years ago. John - do you remember what it was, somewhere around -20F at 13k? Please correct me if I am wrong. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  12. I loved both the Lotus and the Sam. Have jumped the Vengeance as well. I prefer the Sam over the Vengeance. I'm hoping to get a Sam 150 by the end of the year, but I am hearing some very good things about the Crossfire2. But if I had the money, I would purchase a Sam right now. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 15. PC in tow can also be caused by a bad PC. Is your packer responsible for you gear maintenance as well? If I find something wrong with the rig or gear, I tell the jumper to take it to the rigging loft and have it worked on. I don't fix gear, I just pack, However, I will look for the obvious as I am packing - twisted brake lines, worn closing loop, worn brake lines, broken lines, ripped canopy, etc.... _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 16. As a packer, I do not expect tips, nor do tips get you a better pack job....in fact most people do not tip. However, it is nice that some of my customers are kind enough to give me an extra $5 or a beer after sunset. It's a nice way to know that they remembered that sweet opening I gave them on that quick turnaround so they could make just one more jump before nightfall. Tippers do not get packed first - first come, first packed is the way I work - unless I have an "all-day" aggrement with someone or if I am packing for a team. I pack the same way for every customer since a good pack job is the only way for me to get repeat business. But, as a skydiver you are responsible for yourself - and I have no idea what you do to your gear after I hand it back to you. Paying for a repack would be something I would consider only if was 100% positive it was my error....and even then, I don't know if I would pay for it. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 19. Was pondering this on the way into work today (daydreams of skydiving are becoming more often as the spring approaches here in the midwest). What is the history of the drogue? I always hear the upjumpers talk about making tandems in the days before drogue fall, but then I remember that Kittlinger (sp?) made his jump with one. When did the drogue first surface? When did it start being used on tandems, and did all the rigs start using it at the same time? What were the reasons it was introduced into the sport (I'm sure I know a few of them, but wonder what was said back then). Were there many mal's that could have been prevented with a drogue? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 21. The Seminars are always good - I can't wait to see the skyhook out there! I haven't missed an Expo yet, and I feel that its a better forum for safety than any Safety Day seminar I have been to. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 22. Same boat as you, but I should be there Friday night. It's gonna be cold in that bus! Just realized I haven't jumped since October and was hoping for at least one this weekend.....only to realize that my reserve is out of date, and my USPA license is expired (oops). _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 23. There really isn't anything in Texas worth bombing, is there? At least that's why my girl keeps telling me she moved away from there so, here are some depressing stats on nukes: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/bomb/sfeature/blastmap.html as well as http://216.239.33.100/search?q=cache:4ectp8ClJ_sC:www.psr.org/consequences.htm+nuclear+bomb+explosion+maps&hl=en&ie=UTF-8 _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 24. QuoteWhen it stalled the 20+ that was standing on the gate got tossed. As it fell some of the remaining people were bounced inside around like pin balls and a few more got tossed clear in the planes freefall. I heard someone hit the tail or something too. I think the formation still built to something like a 14 way.Quote Had a friend on that load - I think she said it was a big way for someone's 100th jump or soemthing like that. The quote above is roughly what she described. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  25. I have had nothing but problems with it so far. Go back in and check your settings. I've found that it sets all media files to play on it, even if you choose not to have it play a specific type. For instance - I didn't want it to play MP3's since I like my QCD player. QCD was set as the MP3 file type association on the OS (I have XP SP1), but whenver I opened my MP3 folder - system crash or hault (usually the page file and CPU usage would peak). After noticing that the File type icon was blank, I opened WMP9 and checked the options on it. Yup, in the program it has MP3 selected in one of its file types. I have installed this on four machines now, and it did it each time. Also, if you tell the WinInstaller not to allow WMP9 to update your media files via the internet, it will default the setting to "on" anyhow. I came home from work to find alll my media files on my machine "updated" by WMP9 because it felt it had to update the tags I had on them. I had spent a few weekends updating all my music files to have a specific ID3 tag, and WMP9 changed ALL of them without my permission (yup, the one day I forgot to turn my firewall on). So, check all the settings on WMP9. I still find it interesting that MS is allowing other OS's besides XP upgrade the media player - they originally announced the only way you could get version 8 or higher was by upgrading your OS to XP. Maybe if they crash enough 9x machines, people will upgrade out of frustration. But don't forget the MS policy - there are no bugs, only hidden features and user error. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
