Yeah, but the pizza is still hot when it arrives. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPQIizRp9ck Yves. That one looks (and sounds) like 2 lawn mowers tooling around each other. Made me shake my head. However, this one just made me burst out laughing... Monster Smart ltdiver Did ya notice the little wind-up keys...too funny. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne
  2. Do you have any specific numbers in mind? E.g., how much RDT&E money has been invested in climatology/climate research, compared to say missile defense? How much do you know about trends in funding for biodefense post-fall 2001 compared to public health? Do you have any idea how many 'manhours' have been lost during OIF/OEF due to diarrheal diseases and how much funding has been invested in developing pretreatments and therapeutics to those causitive agents? If your scenario regarding creation & implementation of research funding programs is correct, one should expect billions and billions being put toward alternative energy research and technology to end dependence on oil. Why hasn't there been? VR/Marg No I don't know. I don't need to compare X vs. Y. Why are the numbers compared to anything relevant? I know there is and will be lots of money changing hands over GW research, and not just from the gov't. Are you saying it's not possible to exagerate the problem with the goal of getting research funding? Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne
  3. Hmmm. He's correct. Do you have a point? Absolutely. Grants are rarely given to research a non-problem. I don't know the answer here John. I know the possibilities only. There's alot of money that will be tossed around off this GW issue. I'm sure it's possible to create a perceived problem in an effort to prompt government research and the $$ that go with it. I don't believe it's not at least a motivator. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

  5. ...so you can't have an All-Star Game. http://www.wkyc.com/news/politics_govt/politics_article.aspx?storyid=92229&catid=130 Beachwood is about 10 miles from my hometown. Probably the most affluent suburb of Cleveland. Somehow I'm not surprised. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

I'm sure that's true when it hits something stationary. Not so sure when it gets creamed by a US Express 18 wheeler. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne
  8. So, your link would have us believe that oceanic tectonic activity is new (I'm trying to think of an ocean basin which lacks it) These are the first pyroclastic deposits we’ve ever found in such deep water, at oppressive pressures that inhibit the formation of steam, and many people thought this was not possible,” says Robert Reves-Sohn, staff member of the WHOI and lead scientist of the expedition carried out on the Swedish icebreaker Oden in 2007. and that this particular (nine year old) eruption is responsible for the thinning ice? That's reaching just a bit don't cha think? Only reaching as far as the people who think my SUV is responsible. Actually, the oceanic crust in that region is unusually thin and the overall hydrothermal venting in the surrounding area is (and has been) very active. That's one reason that the Gakkel ridge spreads at a much much slower pace than most oceanic ridges. As as side note, the hydrothermal vents there apparently have a good chance of harboring some interesting forms of life, possibly even new species. They believe the basin was formed about 65 million years ago and it apparently doesn't share any deep water connections with neighboring oceans. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

  10. http://www.hoystory.com/?p=5029&referer=sphere_related_content An international team of researchers was able to provide evidence of explosive volcanism in the deeps of the ice-covered Arctic Ocean for the first time. Researchers from an expedition to the Gakkel Ridge, led by the American Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), report in the current issue of the journal Nature that they discovered, with a specially developed camera, extensive layers of volcanic ash on the seafloor, which indicates a gigantic volcanic eruption. Volcanic eruptions under the Arctic couldn't possibly melt the ice now could it? Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

Saw quite a few of these in the EU this spring. A good fit in the city. But yesterday I saw one tooling down the freeway, semi in front and behind. Am I the only one who'd feel like a bug staring at an oncoming windshield in one of these things? I know they faired pretty good ih the IIHS testing but simple physics says you're a dead man if you get hit by anything other than a small child on a tricycle while driving it. Yes. The Amish farmers near here don't spay or neuter. We found her on Petfinder.com. She lived the first 8 weeks of her life under a porch. She went under our deck today...really difficult to get her to come out. I think she was looking for her siblings. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

Oh I know how that works. We're already crate training and she seems to be getting the idea that it would be better to take a dump outside. We had a Aussie/? mix when my kids were younger. Extremely intelligent but also very protective. Fenced in area in the back yard. We went out one night and left him in the fence when he was about 6 mos. Little sucker got under the fence. Smart enough to do that but had no understanding of the 4 wheeled killer. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

It's a female...my daughter chose Skyler. I always thought a dog responds to it's name better when it ends with "eee". You know, Tomeeee, or Ralpheee. But that's what she chose so there it is. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

  23. I give you alot of credit for even starting this thread. You had to know there's be plenty of folks on here who would want to tear you down for being patriotic. Born in 1958. I was raised to believe this is the greatest country on the planet. I still do. I don't think I'm better than someone in anther country, just more lucky to live in the US. And yes, I do believe my country is better than anyone else's. My country has done some amazing things in my lifetime. It's not perfect, and it's done some things I'm not proud of too. I don't have blind faith like I did when I was a young boy. But I still beleive. I still put my hand over my heart when I sing the national anthem. I'm proud to hear it played at the Olympics. I remember the sacrafices many have made, and continue to make for me. Many times I'm frustrated with the US as it is today. I see us becoming a nanny state more and more. I see us burdened with special interests, lawyers, and the laws they pass that pertain to only a few but affect us all. But I still beleive. Problem today is its not PC to be patriotic. It's become a dirty word, and uncool thing. But whenever some country has a problem they look to us to help. Whether it's money or some other form of aid. I worry about the future of my country. So many people are so concerned that we've lost our standing in the world. I think it's more important to be concerned with our standing within our own borders. I'm sure you think your country is the greatest on the planet too. You should. You live and die there. You raise your family there, work hard, and pay your taxes. I'd be disappointed if you didn't beleive that. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne
