  1. I know this thread is really old, but I was wondering if anyone has found any more interesting google earth skydiving pictures. Someone in freefall would be interesting. Skydive Gananoque has an Otter load of canopies in the air. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson
  2. I'm selling my rig. It's a VIII DOM 1997 with a Sabre 1 135 and a Raven 150. Both canopies are in excellent shape, 500 jumps on main.. no damage. Main is not ugly (Hey, it does make a difference!) Neither is rig. Black and grey, rig has maybe 1000 jumps on it, excellent shape as well. What is a reasonable price to ask? I have been offered $1350 CDN by a local jumper.. should I jump on it? This guy is interested in rig only and will try to turn over the canopies. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson
  3. Dude that OZ is even IN the winter olympics is a huge WIN for us, the amount of snow we get in this country in a year would not cover a decent ski run in the states or canada Funny... apparantly the amount of now they get at Cypres Mountain isn't EVEN enough to cover a decent ski run in Canada! -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson
  4. I was watching boarder cross a few minutes ago and a Canadian boarder was described as being a skydiving instructor with over 700 jumps to his credit. I found a McDonalds profile from 2005 that said he was an instructor with 300 jumps to his credit. I'm curious what dropzone he jumps at. I think they are overdramatizing by calling him an instructor.. coach maybe? I can't find his name on any staff profiles. He's from Quebec. Oh yeah... btw.. GO CANADA!!!! -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

  6. 57811 + 650 = 58461 110 + 2 = 112 58461/112 = 521.97 1 in 522 I'm impressed it's gotten this far with a bunch of skydivers doing math and someone hasn't f'ed it up real bad yet! -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson
  7. Ok, well here's a thought. Since you have access, why don't you steal some drugs and then sell them? I'm sure you might even find people right at the dropzone to buy them.. win win. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson
  8. Oh no... Your post may have just cost me a lot of money. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson
  9. All other things equal, the Sabre is a better canopy. But... and it is a big but, as a previous poster mentioned, some (certainly not most, but a fair amount) of Sabres have a mean disposition and can kick your ass when they open. It would be worthwhile, if you can, to do 20 or so jumps on the Sabre to find out if it is one of "those" Sabres. The PD... I would do a few jumps if you can, but you are going to see pretty consistent characteristics from it on all jumps. The Sabre has much better resale value when you are finished with it. If you jump a lot, with your weight.. you will be done with it and looking for something new after a few hundred jumps. What is important to note though, is that while you may be done with it after a few hundred jumps, that is by no means at all a reason to be looking for something smaller right now. It is a good choice for your weight and experience level as of now. One thing to consider (if you haven't already bought your rig) is to buy a rig that you would have to really cram that 170 into. That way you can jump down a few sizes and not have to worry about the smaller canopies being to small for the rig. This is a common problem for newer jumpers when they start to downsize and can't buy a new rig because they are spending every penny on jumps and the new canopy. Plus you will get better at packing real quick. Something that will really help if you end up buying a brand new ZP canopy as a second canopy. Don't forget to match your canopy choice intelligently with your reserve choice as well. They aren't two separate pieces of gear as much as they are parts that must work together as one complete system. Just my 2 cents. I am NOT a rigger or an instructor, but have experience with your situation. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

  12. I did a few hundred jumps as quickly as I could and then got my C. Cheaper that way, only had to pay for one. I didn't travel though. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson
  13. Go to a new dz where they don't know you and try to inject yourself into a 12 way or something. Just kidding. Something I found pretty neat when I first got free of instruction and was doing solos was to close my eyes for about 5 seconds and then try and do a backflip with my eyes still closed. Whatever you do, do it up high. Open high and play with your canopy. Stall it up high, and then swoop the chicks in front of the hangar with your tongue out and your chest strap loosened off. Just kidding about the last one. Keep your tongue in your mouth, you will look stupid. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

  17. It's not about the money at the dz I speak about. It's about currency and staying safe. I apologize to the dz if I came off sounding like it is militaristic. It is not. It is a fantastic fun place to be and a great place to learn from some of the most experienced instructors in Canada. It is not the highest volume, but is the longest running privately owned dz in Canada and has been running longer than probably 99% of dz's in the states. The dz and the guy making these rules INVENTED some of the methods still used for training at a lot of dz's all over the world. He knows what he is doing. Riggers that grew up there now design the parachutes that you are jumping and the reserves on most of your backs. (If you are a crazy competition swooper.) The simple fact of the matter is that a student is not going to learn properly and safely dragging the course out over a year. The things you learn as your course progresses build upon those things that you learn as it begins. 2 months between AFF jumps and you are not building upon anything. You are taking one step forward and one back. It is unsafe. As simple as that. That is my opinion. Take it or leave it. I know most of you will leave it and I don't really care. I am not wavering on it, no matter how much internet post whoring and bullshit statistics you can throw at me The guys will understand if you have commitments for a weekend (maybe even two). But they need to know that you are committed to staying current and staying safe. If you are not committing to finishing the course than there is no point in starting it. If you can't afford the money up front to pay for the course, than maybe you can't afford to skydive enough to stay current enough to stay safe. AFF or PFF, or whatever you want to call it, at this dz is not about the (skydive by yourself) carnival ride. It is about learning how to not kill yourself. There will be plenty of time after you are done the course to go do whatever the f' you want. I couldn't afford it, so I learned how to pack. I packed my friggen ass off for sometimes 14 hrs a day so I could jump. If you guys want to tell this guy that stretching his course out over a year is just fine and dandy and no big deal and safe as anything then you go ahead. Just don't ever ask about currency in the incident forums. IMO there is no more important time to be as current as you can than during your initial course. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson
  18. Started IAD last May and just doing clear and pulls now? No offence, but are you sure this sport is for you? At our dropzone, the entire freefall course must be paid up front and students MUST be at the dz at 8:00 am every Sat. and Sun. ready to do 3 jumps per day until the course is done. Dragging the course out that long seems to be very counterproductive and perhaps dangerous. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson
  19. Well... all went well. Ended up doing 8 jumps. Flew better than I did when I was current. Had the excess brake line come loose on the second jump and lock my toggle in place, so I ended having to wrap the other side to near full brakes to fly straight and land with the rears. That was a bit exciting for the second jump back. Had a pretty decent 5 way, sitfly, and geeked a couple tandems, including my sister for her first jump. Nearing the end of the weekend though I started to realize that this thing has lost a bit of it's lustre for me. I've been sitting on my gear for two years, kinda missing things and being undecided of whether or not I should sell it. I did a X-Country canopy ride from 13,500 ft in the dying sun said my goodbyes in a near epic setting over the 1000 Islands, now I'm ready to sell the gear. It's just not worth the other sacrifices in my life that I would have to make in order to continue. Thanks for the good times. With this, I bid you all farewell. Good luck. Take care of yourselves out there and blue skies. 25. It's been nearly two years since I last jumped. Gonna get out there this weekend and do a bunch. Nerves are kicking in a little bit. I'm sure the climb in the plane is going to be a little different feeling than I was used to. I'm gonna plan the first jump as a two way belly jump with an instructor. I have 600+ jumps in 3 yrs prior to the layoff, and I'm convinced that finding my pilot chute, ep's, and a safe landing are going to be no problem. Just wondering what should we plan on doing for 14K feet? Edited to add: DZ.com is a little different than I remember on my old 17" monitor to my new 24" imac too... -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson
