Your "Usual" Jump Altitude?
Bluhdow replied to FlyingRhenquest's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Perris and Elsinore are both around 1500 feet I believe. Our jumps are 12,500 AGL which makes it 14,000 MSL. Sounds like we should be able to take it higher! What would keep a DZ from bringing people up higher? Fuel costs? Keeping the loads turning faster? Apex BASE #1816 -

Why doesn't someone just ban this chick already? This thread is exactly like the other one where she produced that awesome blueprint for her wingsuit design (now featured in every one of her posts). Apex BASE #1816

Is there a way to split the clips? So if you wanted to take one side and use only that clip, followed by the reverse angle. Or will any editing done with this camera be a splitscreen 2-in-1 shot? Keep in mind that the force is weak with me when it comes to video editing. =) Great review, thanks!

Canopy fits snug in my container and the WS mod is cheap, so that's a quick and easy fix. I think the open corners will make a noticable difference. I'll switch to a 9 foot bridle asap, might as well since I have a repack coming up soon. Not sure on my PC size...I can take a look at it tonight though and see. It's on the smaller side (vs. other PCs I've seen at the DZ) and it's a ZP. Fits pretty snug into my BOC as is already... Apex BASE #1816

Noted. I'm due for a repack in a couple weeks. I'll have the rigger take care of the bridle and corners. I've got a 6 footer now, so I'll upgrade to 9 feet. I don't think it will be terribly costly, just trying to get a sense of what modifications are urgent and which are optional. Bridle is more urgent than I had thought. Thanks guys! Apex BASE #1816

I've seen this topic discussed quite a bit, but I have some questions on my specific scenario: Jumping a Mirage G4 without dynamic corners and a normal bridle. Just picked up a Phantom 2. 1. Can I have a rigger remove some stitching to make the corners more WS friendly or does it have to go back to PF? 2. Is the P2 a big enough suit to warrant a 9 foot bridle? Or can I get away with my current bridle for now? 3. Which is the more important upgrade for me currently, considering the suit and container choices I've made? I still freefly quite a bit, but my understanding is that neither of these "upgrades" will negatively impact normal openings. Any input is greatly appreciated, thanks! Apex BASE #1816

Not noticing my audible in my new full face Phantom X?
Bluhdow replied to mixedup's topic in Gear and Rigging
Make sure the audible is pushed all the way deep into the pocket. It should actually be a little tough to work out if you've got it all the way down there. I couldn't hear mine at first because it wasn't in the pocket deep enough - so it wasn't aligned with my ear. If you push it down far enough it will seem like it's going to be on your jaw, but it's actually perfect. Apex BASE #1816 -
+1 If someone wants to jump, feel free to light the path. But, to me at least, trying to pursude someone is an ethical no-no. Don't worry, it won't be long until all of your friends are skydiving. That happens in two ways: 1. Some of your current friends may start jumping. Or more likely, 2. Your current friends will be replaced by new ones. Apex BASE #1816

Flock the Vote! - Wingsuit Instructor Poll
Bluhdow replied to WickedWingsuits's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Once again, I'm new here...but it seems to me that this whole thing got kicked off (or at least pushed to the top of the list) by insurance company concerns regarding tail strikes. Not off-landings, not longer flight times, not instability at pull time, just tail strikes. Correct me if I'm wrong...but this training is not already required. If it was, why would we be voting on it's implementation? Apex BASE #1816 -
Flock the Vote! - Wingsuit Instructor Poll
Bluhdow replied to WickedWingsuits's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
As a newer jumper and someone with no wingsuit experience, all I can do is provide the perspective of someone who these new rules will most directly impact...the future wingsuit students. If the issue is tail strikes, why isn't this a poll on how to best prevent tailstrikes? Creating a new set of rules and regulations is a bureaucratic knee-jerk reaction to any and every problem that arises. Certainly there's a more efficient way to address a single issue than to put into place a whole new rating system that will add cost and complexity to an already expensive and heavily regulated sport. My thoughts after reading this thread and the proposal: At best, this rating and coaching requirement is an indirect attempt at reducing the tail strike problem. At worst, it's an overkill approach that creates new cost, barriers to entry, and will (like all new regulations) present us with unintended consequences down the road (e.g. preventing prospective wingsuiters from entering the discipline because their DZ staff lacks a wingsuit czar). Even more problematic in my mind is the precendent it creates with respect to problem solving in this sport. It's basically telling us that in order to correct an issue, we simply need to create a class of discipline-specific czars to fix everything for us. So once again I ask, as a rookie in the sport and a prospective wingsuiter...If tailstrikes are the issue, why aren't we discussing how to best prevent tailstrikes? It seems to me that the best solution probably lies somewhere between taking no action and implementing this new rating requirement. So how about, instead of arguing over this proposal, we try to find an acceptable gray area between the two? Apex BASE #1816 -

When I bought mine it came with a wipe that had some anti-fogging stuff on it. Maybe you can track down some more of that? I'm sure they have anti-fog stuff for snowboard goggles and maybe motorcycle helmets. Perhaps that would work? Somes much more reasonable than taking the visor off. Apex BASE #1816

Tracking suit. When can I start flying one?
Bluhdow replied to Shredex's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I think Phoenix Fly recommends at least 80 skydives before flying theirs. Apex BASE #1816 -
I once had a TSA guy tell me that new guidelines required that they open the main and reserve. I asked him to show me the paper, since I knew that was not the case, he refused. He would not get a supervisor. My only choice was to open up both canopies or go back to the ticket counter and check it in, or keep arguing and probably get detained for causing trouble. To those that want to carry it on - not in a bag...this is not a good idea. Please suppress your desire to be cool with your rig on your back. There are plenty of nervous people out there that might get security people involved as you wait for your flight. We do not need or want that kind of attention, as the hassle resulting from such incidents will encourage individual airlines, airports, and even the whole TSA to revisit their policy that allows us to carry on our rigs. Having it visible will cause problems and hurt us all, so please just don't do it. You might have to check it in as I did anyway (unless you're willing to open both canopies), so you'd want to have in a bag for that possibility. Thank you for your good advice. Much appreciated! The TSA letter says to pack the container in s seperate gearbag by itself...but has anyone just worn it like a backpack and sent it through the scanner that way? It's a lot easier to carry on my back vs. in a gearbag in my arms... I'd never check it. They've lost enough worthless luggage of mine to prevent me from ever giving them something of value. I'm always told how much people want to start skydiving because it's so cool and they'd love it etc. Then in the same breath they explain that they can't start now because of some BS reason. There's always time/money/energy for the most important thing on your list. Apex BASE #1816
