Recommended Posts

so if you owned a big DZ and had unlimited cash, and could buy 5 jump planes(or helicopters?) (they can all be the same) and running costs didnt matter. what would you get?

>and could buy 5 jump planes . . . .

Would they have to be used only for jumping, or could you fly them around as well?

If you could fly them about, then the list would be:

-an otter on amphib floats
-a regular otter
-a C-130 for boogies and bigways (CASA if that's not available)
-a PC-12 (or King Air) for flying around
-a C182 for slow days

With that fleet (assuming the CASA and King Air) you could put up 60-ways and still have the ability to send one tandem up.

I completely agree. That sounds like a great fleet. Too many big planes, and you're screwed for jumping on those slow days.
What goes up, must come DOWN!!!

But the original post says UNLIMITED CASH and running costs DON'T MATTER. If that's the case . . . round up those 5 HERC's from the world record jumps in Thailand . . . those would be great for SUNSET HOP n POPS !!!
You think you understand the situation, but what you don't understand, is that the situation just changed.

Oh oh this is fun....

A turbo C206, with floats. Small enough to do loads of three, fast for a Cessna, and beach jumps would be awesome.

One of those huge russian helicopters with a tailgate ramp.

A blimp. Ballon jumps, and landing on target.

Twin otter because I think they have a lot of soul.

The fifth would have to be some huge jet.

Otter
C-182
G-5
Helio-Stalion

Otters are the most versatile skydiving aircraft. So useful.

I have almost 2G Hrs flying jumpers in one of these. Nostalgia

A Gulfstream for the world tour. Fast and huge.

The Hellio S is so cool it just looks mean. I love that thing.
HPDBs, I hate those guys.

Slightly off topic -

But AOPA-Pilot just did a write up on the Diamond DA42 light twin. Two diesel engines with full FADEC and partial liquid cooling. No carb icing, no shock cooling, no cowl flaps, no mixtures. At 60% power you'll get a cruise of about 150kts and a fuel consumption equivalent of about 20mpg - more efficient than most SUV's. Single engine climb under STC to 6000 feet. Very nice airplane.

B-52H Stratofortress.

You could do a 400-way out of one plane.

Alternatively, you could load up 400 jumpers in Louisiana and take off for just about any dropzone you wanted. It'd take about an hour and fifteen minutes to get from Louisiana to DeLand, and about three and a half hours to get from DeLand to Perris. Or, it would take about seven hours to get from DeLand to Paris.

One reference (from a .mil address, so you know it has to be right) says that the stall speeds vary from about 100-150 knots depending on loading, so it's maybe even conceivable that you _could_ jump from one.

Cost is no object, right?

1. B-17 with a working bomb bay
2. Twin Otter (I AM a practical sort)
3. C-182 wide body
4. 2nd Twin Otter
5. Porter

Wouldn't a formation load with a B-17 and 2 Otters be cool?
