2 journalists shot dead on live TV in Virginia.

After 9/11, while working at Schwab, a noticeably high number of our middle eastern employees had FBI interviews.
A few of them said after they felt none of us trusted them and had reported them to the feds because of that.
I think they were right actually.
We had a couple of hard core, um, nutters if you will.

In the USA you're far more likely to be killed by a nutter with a grudge than by a terrorist. Yet we spend $billions on TSA and peanuts on mental health.

I've posted about California's AB 1014 in the past. They toned it down a bit before it passed such that the person doing the reporting has to be law enforcement or a family member. When it was introduced, anyone could file a report to have your guns confiscated, and getting caught lying in the report is only a misdemeanor. http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201320140AB1014.

Since that passed, one assemblywoman has been trying to fix it a bit by giving the option to have a firearms dealer hang on to your guns for the duration (rather than police throwing them in a rusty evidence locker) http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201520160AB950 and by reclassifying the act of knowingly lying on a report as perjury and punishable as a felony. http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201520160AB225

None of it has anything specifically to do with mental health. The subject can be a nut job, "not functioning normally", or even just an asshole so it sidesteps quibbling over which equally inoperative label we should use.

I think restricting it to family members means we won't see the social experiment of an Internet app and it will probably be used infrequently. However, since all it does is take guns and ignores the root of whatever the problem might be, I worry about how an individual will react. I don't think you can guarantee a tempest in a teacup just because they don't have guns. I think to an abnormally functioning asshole nut job you've just legitimized his or her persecution complex. Cue the manifestos and improvised weaponry.

Yep. Take a tool away and people will find an alternate.

But the alternate might just be less efficient, or a pain in the ass. This sounds like at least an experiment that might work.

Eddie the Eagle classes should be taught at schools as well. Some parents don't want their kids exposed to the concept of sex, some to the concept of guns. Some want them exposed only to people like them. Those are all unrealistic in the long run; EE classes didn't glorify guns, they just matter-of-factly provided some kid-appropriate tools for kids to use to stay safe and help others stay safe.

There are age-appropriate middle grounds between showing kids porn and informing them of the consequences and tools available to make sex safe. There are also age-appropriate middle grounds between keeping kids always in a gun-free zone and giving them their first rifle at six with a video game showing them how to blow away bad guys.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

Often they will be less successful with the new tool. Take away someone's gun and leave them with a knife, and their odds of successfully killing themselves goes from 85% to 1%. Let them use any other tool they like and their odds rise to 9%.

Perhaps, but I feel like if anyone has it in them to overcome such adversities it's the guy who you've just decided needed his guns taken away because he was an abnormal asshole nut job. Now he doesn't even have the distraction of obsessively cleaning or accessorizing his guns, he can get right to it.

******No, doing any of those things do not, BY THEMSELVES, make you insane. Neither does killing people.

Who was talking about "just" killing people though? That doesn't apply at all to this case. This was by no means simply a killing. This was not simply a crime of passion or heat of the moment. This was clearly premeditated with a manifesto and documentation.

The guy was fucking nuts.

Ah. So he was nuts because he premeditated it and told the world why he did it. Okay. I'm sure that he would be found not guilty by reason of insanity. I mean, what sane person ever premeditates a murder?

I wonder if the woman with terminal cancer, who premeditated her own death, and carried it out, wrote a manifesto, and made a video of her own death is insane, or fucking nuts.

I assume it would be more accepted that she is not, because she murdered herself, not two other people.

I think people en masse are bullies and this would be abused to the extreme - I could see a lot of posters here reporting on each other just for disagreeing on subjective stuff completely unrelated to potential for violence.

Absolutely. Which is why I was really uncomfortable with the idea.
However, what I've seen over the years on the internet is that if you take away the anonymity aspect and then force people to make their statement on their own in public you nix 90% of the 'me too' crowd.

For the app concept there would have to be constant weighting of your vote - have you 'earned' the right to be listened to? I've no idea how that value would be defined, but we'd need to stop malicious and repeated reporting as well as the 1-off 'I'm drunk and pissed off' out-liars.

Like you I quite like the concept - creating a channel for civil responsibility. But the other implications scare the crap out of me - including the remit of the agency which would have to oversee it all.

Headline: "Study confirms that the US is No. 1 in mass shootings, blames 'gun culture'"

Article Body: "A comprehensive analysis of the perpetrators, their motives and the national contexts for their actions suggests that several factors have conspired to create in the United States a potent medium for fostering large-scale murder."

Also in the article it mentions the U.S. has had 31% of the 291 mass shootings worldwide between 1966 and 2012, or about 2 per year. Before you say anything, yes, I'm aware they weren't evenly distributed. I'm simply pointing out that this is the type of number you get when you count the events people would generally recognize as a mass shooting, and that are worth lumping together and talking about as single type of event.

Right, the USA just has a far higher proportion of weirdos than the rest of the planet.

Because that makes sense.

Have you walked downtown, in any American large city and looked around and people watched . . . Your opinion might vary a bit if you did.

I have walked downtown in large cities in a large number of countries. They all have weirdos, the USA is not unusual in that respect. Only in the USA do the weirdos have no problem getting hold of guns - that is what is unusual.

Only illegally do they have no problem.

What say we enforce the laws in place, eh?,

We've taken God and prayer out of our schools. We've taught kids that they are no longer responsible. It is someone else's fault, problem or responsibility. We've taught kids that the government takes over as parent when they leave home. That is if they leave home. We've taught kids that sex is good and perversion is acceptable.

I think you get the idea but I know it won't make sense to you.
Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. They only last for an instant but it is a Holy Instant. Let your soul absorb them.

No, it doesn't. Because most other first world nations are more secular and less religious than the US, and most other first world nations are much more open about sex and less hung up over kinky stuff than the US, and most other first world nations have a more comprehensive socialist safety net / benefit system than the US. But according to Turtlespeed most other first world nations are also much more normal than the US.

So why are you guys so fucked up? What are y'all doing wrong?
