The funny thing is Christians don't even bother praying for missing limbs, they know better. Mysterious diseases and ailments that have remissions is another story, when a cancer goes into remission, they can then heap all the praise on the kid.

How do you know? Have you personally seen every amptuee out there in all of history? Of course not. And if we are directly looking at Christianity, if a person coming back from the dead doesn't convince you, healing a missing arm certainly wouldn't. And seriously, would any of you really, REALLY convert if all of a sudden in the next My Fav Medical Journal there was a documented case of an amputee's arm regenerating? I doubt it. I bet people would scramble for a natural explanation faster than a bunch of fatties in a weight watchers convention noticing a stray eclair. But that's just a bit of fun to really run down.

The real funny thing about this line of attack is that the critics are guilty of doing exactly what they attack believers for doing quite often: that is, they anthropomorphize God(s). No matter how you cut it, the argument eventually breaks down to, "If I were God, I would do this. Since this didn't happen, God doesn't exist". It's a pretty weak argument, especially when the God in question would have a focus no where near our own, have knowledge far greater than our own, and operates in a time frame outside of anything we could imagine.

It would surely be nice to believe that God occasionally regrows amputated legs for deserving amputees. And many people state such a belief. When they are asked why, for example, a decorated war hero who saved dozens of children is not "deserving" enough to have his legs grown back by God, there are a dozen ready reasons that a faithful person could use to rationalize that. "Well, God works in mysterious ways." "He might be a good example of the evils of war." Etc etc.

But if they are put in a position where they have to use rational thought in a real life situation they are generally capable of choosing the rational. A doctor who sees a patient who says "doc, doc, it's a miracle! I was out with my friends last night, and I got lost, and fell on the tracks, and the train cut my legs off - and look, God grew em back by the morning!" he's going to send him to talk to a psychiatrist instead of hustling him off to the trauma bay to ensure the massive blood loss and newly grown legs are not endangering him, Because while he might indeed believe that God can do that, he understands at a basic level that that really doesn't happen.

I think that belief has a very strong influence on humans. Whether the belief is that God, Allah or the Cookie monster is healing you doesn't appear to make much difference. The end result is that it sometimes appears to work for certain illnesses.

Prayers go out all the time that aren't known. Anywho, when talking about a specific dead person coming back, like Jesus, that's a whole other thread. Short of it is, on my end, given the accounts of his death, its silly to think a) he survived and b) the roman that skewered him with a spear (who would have been executed himself had he let down a live prisoner from execution) made a mistake. That guy had every incentive to make sure Jesus was dead as a door nail, and being a soldier, was pretty good and both knowing death and making people dead :)


edit: but anyway, how many people really would convert if presented with a regenerated limb account? I bet none. The hardened would look for natural causes, maybe touting some unlocked gene theory, or simple case of mistaken identity, or plain fraud.
