Newsweek Depiction of Obama as Lord Shiva Upsets Some Indian-Americans

Recommended Posts

I am sorry but, some people need to get a life. This seems so stupid to me it is funny.

On a serious note, I could see many publications doing this but News Week?http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/11/21/newsweek-depiction-obama-lord-shiva-upsets-indians/?test=latestnews

I am with you on that! It's a silly US politically correct term.

To add to this, I think it's a very devisive term. It singles out groups based on race. There really is no such thing as African American or Mexican American or in this case Indian American. Like you said you are either American or you are not. But it makes the politically correct crowd feel better because the are acknowledging the minorities, or so they think.

There are many hyphenated Americans who use those terms because, while they live in America and enjoy all of its freedom and prosperity, their allegiance remains with their home country or ethnicity, rather than with America.

Nowhere in the article was the term Indian-American used. It's the Hindus that are upset. Hinduism just happens to be the predominant religion of India. You can be full blooded American and Hindu, just like you can be full blooded American and Christian.

And how else is an organization of Hindu Americans supposed to identify themselves? Association of Americans Who Practice the Hindu Religion? You find this less offensive that Hindu American Association?

Umm, yeah, about that. There's this thing called a headaline that most articles have. They're usually considered part of the article.

You may want to check the headline for the article this thread is about. Just a thought.

edit to add:

And then there's the first paragraph...

Newsweek's depiction of President Obama on its latest cover has irked some Indian Americans who, fresh off Obama's visit to the world's largest democracy, are not happy with the image of the U.S. president as the Hindu deity, Lord Shiva.

I guess I should have been more clear:

The only person related to this article using the term Indian American is the Fox News reporter.

Better?

Yeah, Fox News is such a left wing suck up rag.

You think so? That's weird, most people think they're pretty right wing.

Are you replying to something specific in my post? I never said anything about Fox News other than to identify the reporter. I didn't feel like going back to the link to get their name.

bear in mind that the headline is typically written by the editor, rather than the reporter. Has to do with the number of inches the article will get on the page where it's placed.

I'll add the little irony smiley next time for the slow people.

Fox is trying to be sensitive and Politically Correct? - how about that? when did they become an over reactive left wing sensitive rag? :S

Considering that the term got their usual readership all up-and-arms about things, I'd say it was a great manipulation of the story on their part.
