Where's the "stay in my own country and build the best life possible" option?

That really only applies to the 2% of the American population whose ancestors emigrated to North America via the Siberia-Alaska land bridge about 5,000 years ago.

Really?

So you believe that The Uniterd States Of America is not actually your coutry then.

THAT - EXPLAINS - A - LOT about your posts.

The visas are easy to get if you meet the basic qualifications (in otherwords you need to possess experience and education in a field that the US considers "careers in demand")...

Yes the TN visa is a good avenue for coming to the USA legally that a lot of Canadians have taken advantage.

If I may just add one additional point: Mexican citizens also qualify for TN visas, Mexico being a NAFTA nation. This door to legal immigration is open to Mexico as well.

RuchMC - please edit that last post with all the periods - it is really bothersome to have to scroll that far (even if it is right:D).

Thank you in advance.:)

. . . And partially because we may have made different education/career choices in life if immigrating to the U.S. was a goal.

And that is absolutely true. I am a survivor, I will do what it takes to get what I want to happen, and I would do it legally.

If I needed a degree to get that done, then i would have taken steps long ago to acquire one.

The basic underlying probem here is that the left some seems to think that it is a right to have life handed to you on a platter. Life is not always fair. Life is not always just. It is just life. Do what you can with what you have, and stop requiring others to do it for you.

Almost everything makes sense once you understand that America is a bureaucratic oligarchy.

Laws and their enforcement (or lack thereof) are about moving money to wealthy business people (especially bankers) and gaining or maintaining power.

The agricultural industry is built on top of low-cost labor. Ignoring "illegal" immigrants provides that labor without the obligations that go with "legal" immigration like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. It makes financial sense.

Making regulations and applying them with close scrutiny requires employees, who require managers, who require middle managers, who require executives, who gain power by having bigger fiefdoms. Being efficient about things like legal immigration would mean that a large portion of our 2,768,886 federal government employees would be out of work, making for fewer middle managers and less power.

It actually doesn't make financial sense in the big picture. If there are people not given benefits or paid enough to afford to live (legal or illegal though illegals have less recourse) they will seek out "free" services for what they don't have through charities, government programs, local services, and in maybe even fraud or theft. This puts additional strain on multitudes of public and private systems which in turn causes services to be cut, prices (or taxes) to rise, or additional debt from loans to be incurred to try and maintain the status quo including the company that had the low wages to begin with.

This is one reason why accounting practices are fundamentally flawed as they can't quantify factors such as these or others. :S

I agree - I should have made it a little more ambiguous, but comparitively, the left is closer to socialism than the right . . .

(my wife and )I was (were) going to apply for the alien of exceptional ability visa a year or two ago.

we have competed in the world championships twice and the world cup once.
I know of somebody that competeted for their country in style an accuracy precisely to do that.

Leigh and I competed for legitemate rasons, and will continue to do so once she has completed here world record endeavours.

We did not want to immigrate perminately but wanted to hang around for training and earn some coin while we did so.
We have both decided that neither of us want to live in the united states for any length of time anyway,
but we do wish to visit more places other than california, gee she has been there too many times already and is going back in 2 weeks for another record:Sattempt.
Cant they do those in arizona or somewhere other than perris??:D

The rules (also summarized in this post).

How many people who post here would be able to immigrate to America if they weren't born here? I left off the marriage and relatives categories -- most of us who are citizens have American parents, and those who are married have American spouses

My employer pretty much hires citizens, and very, very few legal aliens. None sponsored. My degree is in Sociology. I stay where I am.

Sorry, but it's not nearly that simple. First you have to find an eligible US company that wants to hire you. Then they have to obtain a certification from the Department of Labor that there are no qualified US citizens available to fill the job. Usually this means they have had to have advertised the job for a period of time (I think a month) in trade publications and large-circulation newspapers, without finding any qualified US applicants. They can't exclude Americans by low-balling the salary either, they have to offer at least the prevailing wage for that type of employment. Once the employer obtains a labor certification, you can apply for a H1 visa, but there is a quota on those and most applicants have to wait a year or more. Once you're in the States, after a while (a few years) you can apply for permanent residency. This is the route most often taken. If you have extraordinary skills, and can prove that [generally by demonstrating that you are currently being paid significantly more than the industry standard because of your exceptional skill], your employer may be able to apply for permanent residency on your behalf. Details are here.

So no, the US doesn't hand out green cards to anyone with a degree. That's just the minimum starting point for a long expensive process. The point of the thread is that without a degree you can't even get started, except in a few very unusual circumstances (world-class athlete or entertainer for example),

Do that, you've nothing to lose and you might get lucky. Assuming you are from Northern Ireland, otherwise you're ineligible.
