Socialism in America

Glenn Beck on Obama's 'Change': Socialism

First of all, i have never laughed so hard in my entire life. Second of all, is this really how the majority of Americans view socialism? I know Glenn Beck's opinion probably isnt an adequate sampling of the American opinion in general.. But still?

i don't know how it is in the rest of the world, but here In Europe socialism is pretty wide spread and accepted and has been for the last 70 years. Hell, here in Norway we've had the socialists in office pretty much all the time since the 1880's and we're one of the most equal and well off country's in the world, i love it. I just can't see how people like that man reason when they say that socialism is the same as Communism or on the way to it. That's like getting all fussy and calling republicans nazis just because their right wing. I mean come on, it's common sense that communism is a authoritarian form of all left wing politics, just like national-socialists and Nazis are the authoritarian version of all the other right wing forms of politics. So my question is, is the majority of Americans really this stupid when it comes to politics? because this really took the prize in the stupidest sh*t I've seen in ages.

this is one reason why many americans are so against socialism here. if an american wants to live in a socialist nation, pick one that fits your views closest and move there, but stop trying to turn this country socialist.

sorry, i didn't bother reading the glenn beck link because he's long been a "sky is falling" kind of guy.

He's being dramatic, but the issues he's discussing are potential actions that even go beyond what I know about Europe. We're not talking about "social programs" only, but the nationalization of major components of our economy, which is something that isn't even the norm in Europe.

Given the (unfortunately)-elected in Congress (e.g. Rep. Frank, Sen. Dodd, et al), most of whom have never run a business, proclaim to be able to run the banking system, the auto industry.

Even American utilities, which are amongst the most highly regulated, are not "run" or "owned" by the government.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Well, you have to remember that most Americans from the moment tey are born are told they live in the best country in the world, that everything their country does is the best, that they build the best products etc. Just look at winning their Baseball league, the team that wins gets crowned World Champion.

As such, you can't really blame them, many just don't know any better.

No. Most of us are taught history. History is as much about failures as anything else and we Americans are taught about our failures past and present.

I will note that socialism has caused problems. The National Socialist party in Germany did, indeed, do plenty of things to restore the German economy. And as much as they are accused of b eing "righjt wing" they are at least as much "left" as "right."

What the American ethos has been is one of individual determination. Also recall that our history has been of our population (except for the blacks) being built by people who willingly came here to escape a fucked up Europe. Or Asia.

And our forefathers wprked their asses off when they came here. They were the refuse of European society and had the chance to kick ass when they got here.

That being said, can you blame an American ethos?

My wife (who lived in Europe for 3 years comsecutively and spent more time there since) has described the key difference between Europeans and Americans: "Europeans are arrogant. Americans are ignorant."

Just something the think about.

My wife is hotter than your wife.

You can't just say National Socialist party because the "intellectuals" who think that the Nazis were right wing, don't know that the actual name for that very clear left wing ideology that they know as Nazism was the National Socialist party.

Now I will go back to lurking and watching others argue.

The answer is no, most Americans are not that stupid when it comes to politics. There is however a large enough group of consumers that are that stupid as to watch Glen Beck.
I currently have a French roommate who believes that socialism begins all discussions from a morally superior position to capitalism. Are all Europeans that naive when it comes to politics?

there really weren't that many people saying they would move to canada. that said, if taxes here became equal to the taxes in canada, i would give serious thought to moving to b.c. not because of politics, but for the recreation.

Americans are ignorant

It is true that Americans are arrogant about their ignorance of how the rest of the world operates. But here in Canada (and also Europe) people are ignorant about how arrogant they come off.

As far as America with it's capitalistic roots turning into a socialist state? Well if enough people want socialism enough people will get it and right now the US media is pushing a socialist agenda. It is easier to control the masses under the socialist mantra. Capitalism is far from perfect. It produces winners and losers. But the beauty of capitalism is that with the proper work ethic channeled into the right direction, you the individual can realize financial benefits. Socialism just promotes the "I am a victim of the world, what is the government doing for me" mentality.

There are a lot of people unemployed these days and those who believe in personal responsibility are off bettering themselves improving their skills and making themselves more marketable. Those who believe in the "nanny state" are sitting back doing nothing but whining that their government masters are not looking after them.

The choice is yours America. Do you believe that you the individual should chart your own future, or do you believe that it's the government's responsibility to get you through life "from the cradle to the grave".

Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

That's so clever......

Even domestics Americans have several cultures within the States itself. Saying Euros are so much more sophisticated because they've 'traveled extensively' is nuts when you can drive 5 hours and see 15 different countries.

I don't think one can brag about international travel when they've never even left a single continent. And that applies to many Euros. It's like a Kansan bragging about their world travels because they've gone to Texas and South Dakota and three different burroughs of New York. They can even top it off with a visit to southern Cali and trip to Montreal. Much like an arrogant Frenchman who's seen Spain, Germany and Italy - ooooooohhhhh

yawn

Right, it all depends on where you go. An American who travels to Montreal and Mexico City has seen more than a European who lives in France and travels to southern Belgium. On the other hand, an American who lives in Socal and regularly travels to New York, San Francisco and Atlanta has seen far less than a European who lives in Aix and travels to Italy and Slovenia.

Unfortunately it doesn't take a majority. According to Rasmussen, the President's rating has fallen from a +28 to a +2 since election day and 52% of those polled are concerned the dems are going to do too much. Congressional approval is in the low 30's.
So called "representatives" can do whatever they like in Washington with or without public approval.

Of course. All traveling does is expose you to different languages, histories, experiences, cultures, lifestyles etc. People can take a lot from the experience, or take nothing.

Yes, but what about an American who travels to Perris? Now there's an exotic, mind-expanding locale. :P

Imagine if an American had posted a link to a Norwegian political rant, and then followed it up with that question.

Wouldn't that be a huge case of American arrogance?

when they do things that the majority of their constituancy disagrees with and still get re-elected, they are in fact getting public approval to do whatever the hell they want.
