And Ralffers -- when you say you have values, the connotation is that yours are the only values that count. If you say you have your values, that makes it clear that you're doing what you believe is right, but it's a little less judgmental of others' choices.

I have no issue with your beliefs. But when a skydiver claims that "you gotta be a pretty messed up, sick and twisted person" to like something strange, they are being somewhat hypocritical. Jumping out of an airplane is as dangerous, as useless and as hedonistic as it gets. So the next time you're looking to call someone sick or twisted, don't overlook that messed up person in the mirror who likes risking his life for an adrenalin high.

I apologized for that in my post and admitted I was wrong. If you didn't see that - I say again: I was unwise in choosing my words and was wrong. I'm sorry.

If you don't like me because I have values and convictions

This implies that you think those who disagree with you don't have values and convictions. You'd be wrong if that's what you really think. Because my values and convictions might not mesh or agree with yours doesn't mean I don't have them.

Quote

As is the case with most skydivers, I'm guessing you don't believe in God.

How did you determine that most skydivers don't believe in god? Do you mean the Christian "God"? Or do you mean "some higher power"?

Quote

But think about it - if there is a God, than what do you think is the reasons behind all these "rules" are? - rules pertaining to homosexuality, divorce, sexual promiscuity, etc, etc...

Study some history, some sociology and maybe even a bit of cultural anthropology. The "rules" you refer to were in existence in many societies long before the advent of monotheism. Every society has rules pertaining to the sexual behavior of it's members. From an ethnocentric viewpoint, many societies rules appear to be immoral or wrong simply because they do not agree with the rules that you've chosen to follow. From a non-ethnocentric viewpoint, the rules of other societies may work very well - for that society in that time and place.

It is the insistence that "my way is the only way and all who don't agree with me are wrong" (that'd be the basic definition of ethnocentrism) that has led to pretty much every war, genocide and even social injustice that mankind has experienced.

Quote

Lets take the case of homosexuality and sexual promiscuity; both are direct cause of disease running rampant

The domestication of animals is also a direct cause of disease running rampant. Had Europeans, Asians, Arabs and Africans not domesticated and then lived in close contact with animals, they wouldn't have contracted animal diseases (such as smallpox and the plague, both of which came directly from animals just as the bird flu of today does). Does that make the domestication of animals wrong or immoral?

Quote

It's more a matter of faith I suppose, but from a logical standpoint, I think it's a fair assumption to say that there is a God just by looking at everything around us.

Perhaps a class or two in Philosophy (specifically ones that teach logic and reasoning) would help as well...

jeesus christ, ralf, i'm not saying you're wrong. i was brought up catholic (the only TRUE faith the pope claims today!), but i've had different experiences than that. different, near-death experiences to be precise.

lets take a look at buddhism, where *luv thy neighbour as u luv thy enemy"-paradigma becomes quite equivalent; its not a religion, its a lifestyle. one more admirable, than if you read the bible and see what "christians" do however!

as i see in your post, and the PM sent to me clearly indicates, u only believe in words that might have been spoken, or altered, or whatever in the last 20 centuries.. lots of those "insrugents" we (you, as in the US) fight today, say its just another crusade..

me, personally, coming from a catholic background, having found rather buddhist beliefs in real life, i just think fuck all the shite and the discussions, if you're a "christian", and as such a lover of everyone, as the bible KINDA reads, fuck it, wether you're gay, a drug addict, a bucking dz-bum handicapped or whatever, as long as your heart is in its place and you're happy to believe in in old mans white beard or fat guys with a shaven skull, or some beardy mofe, as long aas YOU ARE HAPPY, it all doesnt matter!!!!!!!!!

be yourself, dont be pre-occupied, take life for what its worth (to you), and try to make the world we live in a better place for each and everyone of us a better place.. thats all what all the religions taught us, thats all what counts.. AND, thats all i ever want my life to be like.. i might find things strange n'all, but fuck it, if only ONE person feels better because of that, so be it!!! :)

ya'll got me typing a lot ; my fingers hurt. Can we just do a conference call instead? :D

Chris, the reason I responded with such a long post and PM was because I don't know what to make of your somewhat harsh statements. All I wanted to do was share what I believe and why I believe it. I'm not some religious nut or bigot that some may perceive me to be

I'm not better than anyone of you; I didn't mean to come across as judgmental. As I said in above posts, I regret how I said some things. I'm just trying to live life in clear conscience trying to help, love, and have some positive in the lives of others.

Billvon & Skybytch- you bring up good points; I enjoy constructive discussions such as this and look forward to continuing. Please allow me some time for reflection.

than what do you think is the reasons behind all these "rules" are? - rules pertaining to homosexuality, divorce, sexual promiscuity, etc, etc... Do you think it's because those guidelines for living are in place to annoy us - or perhaps could there be a more practical reason?... Lets take the case of homosexuality and sexual promiscuity; both are direct cause of disease running rampant

The reason those "rules" exist in the bible is because there was no recognized centralized governments for the most part.

If you went to a village tribe leader and said "Hey, leader Bob, King Steve of Mesopotamia wants you to not eat pork cuz it's bad for you and people will die. Tell all your people."

Bob would probably kill you or just ignore you if he didn't like you or your idea. He could care less what you, Mesopotamia or King Steve think.

But if you came to him and said that God has decreed... he is more likely to comply. Effective communications 101: Know your audience and what will motivate them.

Once leaders and rulers discovered this power, like all power it corrupted them. Personal agendas, etc. were all said to be God's word and written down as such.

The higher power concept is not just limited to religion it is used in business and governments today. Unpopular or controversial ideas always come from "another group" this way you can pretend to side with the group you are effecting by saying "yeah I don't understand it either, but we gotta do it." As this is a "higher power" that can effect them, most just do as their told.

It all comes down to fear. Fear is a very powerful control technique with most people, especially fear of the unknown.

Probably the reason that some skydivers don't believe in God and/or religion is we tend to face our fears, not let them control us. Since the majority of religion is based on "Do/don't do this or you'll suffer in the afterlife" (which hasn't been proven to even exist) fear, it just doesn't work.

That and the fact that any time one asks for proof, the standard answer is have faith or the fact that it hasn't not been proven as well means something.

As for the stories in the bible, most if not all can be logically explained. A man rising from the dead? Look up the history of Irish wakes.

People can choose to believe what they want. Atheists and Agnostics are not usually the ones that bring up the topic of religion, but then again we don't back down from it either.

So if we could just agree to disagree and see each other points the world would be a happier place. :)
I do agree with you that there's alot of fucked up things that happen but to me that's more the result of lack of thinking about the possible consequences of actions and the lack of consequences. If someone is always there to save or support them (gov't, charities, family, etc.) why should they change? Shit, they can do more as someone will fix it for them.

Same applies to big business and gov't bailouts. :S

That's actually a myth that mourners at a wake are standing vigil in case the deceased awakes (rises from the dead). Ivan Brunetti; Wilton, David A. (2004). Word myths: debunking linguistic urban legends. Oxford [Oxfordshire]: Oxford University Press. ISBN 0-19-517284-1..
Perhaps instead you should look up the prevalence of alcoholism, the propensity for which is believed to be genetic, among intra-married Irish.

Well, the French used to refer to female orgasm as le petit mort (the little death). Is that what you mean?

I think it's kinda unfair to compare Rafflers to the Taliban because he doesn't believe in s 'n m porn.
I remain indifferent to whatever Baensaurna (or whatever it is) does - what she does in private is up to her.

Let me make it very clear that I was NOT comparing Rafflers to the Taliban.

If I came across that way, it was unintended and I apologize.

I have certain beliefs (that I choose not to share here).

Others have different beliefs. Or lack thereof.

I am very grateful that I live in a country that doesn't force anyone to believe anything. Because once people start forcing their beliefs on others, it gets ugly fast. Religious police, morality police, safety police. It isn't exactly the same but it's too close for me.

...unless she wants to set up an appt...;)

While I understand its part of the territorial nature, I have no idea why women insist on calling me to check on their husbands or boyfriends.

Wouldn't it make more sense just to talk with him?

I litterally had a woman call me today asking if "x name" set up an appointment. I told her I had no idea what she was talking about and it concerns me that she would do the following:

1. Go through his phone
2. Google search my number
3. Call me and ask me stupid questions

I would never go through my BF/GF's phone. If I had suspicions, I'd talk to him about it or end it and part ways, no reason to lose your composure by being insecure and harassing other people. What did she want me to tell her?

My RANT and QUESTION:

Women AND Men: Do you consider your BF/GF being submissive to a dominatrix cheating?

There is no nudity (on my part), no sex of any kind, no touching of the genitals besides punching.

It's just role play with physical pain.

Ok first my disclaimer. I first read this in the bonfire and didn't want to reply because I didn't want to go on a rant in there. I also have not read the 6 pages of posts that go with this thread so if my reply is what 100 of you have already said then I appologize.

Now my rant.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!!! You offer sexual services (whether you think they are sexual services or not is irrelavent because to every sane person in this country it is sexual services) and then get all pissy because thier SO calls you up and gives you shit!!!!!!!! do you live in some fantasy world where only everybody else has to be accountable for there actions??? If you have SEX with someone who is married exspect that thier wife to be upset about that and want to know who the hell thier SO is having sex with!!!!!

Rant over..

Yeah, but that's only $150 an hour each, and besides, it's skydiving.
I pay $18 for less than 1 minute of freefall. That's over $1000 an hour.

I'm voicing my opinion like anyone else here, the only difference is I'm not jumping on the bandwagon.

What you don't seem to be getting is that not everybody's jumping on the Dominatrix Bandwagon, rather we're saying that people who enjoy those activities have a right to enjoy them.

One of my favorite scenes in Joe Jenning's 'Good Stuff' was when they were interviewing Airspeed and one of the guys said (Sorry I don't have my DVDs and I can't remember who said it or if the quote is 100% correct)
"If some guy likes to sit on the couch and watch TV all day, 'Go Big'. If that's what's fun for them that's cool, but this is what's fun for me"

Don't want to bash you man and I understand where you're coming from, but just because some dude likes to get his balls crushed doesn't mean he's a threat to society. Actually he's probably less of a threat, I bet he's not sturring up any shit while nursing those crushed balls:)

And THAT is equivalent to saying "whether you think skydiving is suicidal or not is irrelevant, because every sane person in the country thinks it is suicidal."

>If you have SEX with someone who is married exspect that thier wife to
>be upset about that and want to know who the hell thier SO is having sex
>with!!!!!

1) It's not sex
2) That's up to the couple whether or not to "get upset" about that. Their communication beforehand is what is the key there.

The whole point of my post is that the SO shouldn't be calling me ranting, when:

1. Calling is not going to solve or accomplish anything.
2. The trust is already lost and anything I say is going to be irrelevant in their couples circumstance.
3. The problem resides with the SO who's abusing trust.
