I should've just copied-and-pasted Nightingale's post, but I hadn't read that far, yet. ;)

I disagree. I am in the "little box" into which I describe myself (not "put" myself) because that's what makes sense to me. If things come around to make me feel like changing my views, whether it be events or experiences, I will change them. Until then, I am what I describe. What's the problem with that? Why do you feel that to describe oneself is to chain oneself to always being that way? And even if we accept that that's what it means, why is it wrong to want to always be what you will always think is right?

Did you know that before Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute mile there were people that thought it wasn't possible? The records stood for about 10 years at just over 4 minutes. then Banister breaks it and suddenly, people understood it could be run sub-4 and as soon as as they did, wham, lots of people were running sub-4. Did the human race suddenly get faster in 1954? No. But their mindset sure did.

I really can't conceive of a person calling themselves both "open minded" and sticking all these labels on themselves.

Yes, a person might change their mind, but once a person buys that lifetime membership to whatever organization, how often do they really change it?

That seems like a silly argument to me. Are you saying that because you won't label yourself a Democrat today, tomorrow you might start voting Republican? You'll have to forgive me if I'm somewhat underwhelmed by the probability. :D

Before Palin it -was- a possibility and I stated over a year ago that I wouldn't be opposed to voting for McCain. Post Palin it's not a possibility.

I bought a life membership of the Conservative Party when I was 19. One does amazingly stupid things in one's teenage years. Fortunately I got over it.

I assume that was the Conservative Party in Jolly Old Across the Pond.

Bill brings up a good point in the use of the word sometimes,I think none of us are absolute in our stance. But my reasoning for this thread has to do with a situation where I was having an argument with someone who wasn't even arguing with me but because of my erroneous perception of their fundamental political stance I totally mis interpreted their points. PLUS we do joke around a lot here and I can't tell whether people are actually defending a point or being sarcastic at times.

I'm betting that the more extreme nut jobs will list themselves as 'moderate'.
