Unfortunately, rare is relative. We have had a number of gun and knife related crimes recently (and 1 would br too many). The problem isn't going away

well, this is why the gun lovers here are adament about having defense options. If you can't eliminate the crime element, work on the other side.

I've heard that most UK cops prefer to be unarmed, but I'd never volunteer for such duty.

Maybe he would still be alive if England wasn't so paranoid about guns that they don't even let most of their street cops carry them. Then maybe the initial responders wouldn't have been taken hostage, and the armed response unit wouldn't have had to jump in to save them.

Or maybe it wouldn't have made a whit of difference anyway, because someone willing to kill a cop doesn't give a damn about gun-control laws, and will own one anyway.

Your statement would make sense if the unarmed cops had been killed and the armed cops had been able to defend themselves with their weapons. However, the opposite happened. The lack of weapons helped save the lives of the two unarmed cops, and the armed cop was shot dead. Clearly his weapon did not help preserve his life.
