narcimund 0 #52 October 20, 2003 QuoteIf words like nigger and gay are offensive and those that they are used to represent are insulted by them, maybe they shouldn't use them to describe themselves. Oh, but you misunderstand. Words can have multiple meanings. People can use the word "gay" to mean homosexual and then another time use "gay" to mean ... well, whatever general derogatory use people mean by it. If they really mean "homosexual" then it's the same meaning with a negative connotation. But this use is simply a synonym for "bad". If people wanted to use "polack" to mean "Polish person" that would be perfectly reasonable. And it would STILL be rude to yell "Hey, polack!" at people as an insult. Mind you, I'm not much put out by all this. I think the loose reasoning is far more troublesome than a silly re-use of the word. jumpinjackflash 0 #53 October 20, 2003 So you think the movie was bright and well educated too??? couldn't resist, too easy... jack btw: all my gay friends are very bright and well educated, think its a conspiracy??? lolIt's a gas, gas, gas...
PhillyKev 0 #54 October 20, 2003 No, I understand perfectly. Obviously if you refer to yourself as gay, you're not trying to insult yourself, however others may use the word to insult others, or even you. My point is that just because it's the same word, it doesn't have the same meaning. There are a lot of words that are spelled and pronounced the same, but have different meanings. He called the movie gay. Did you take that to mean he thought the film liked other films of the same gender? Of course not. It's a different word that just happens to be spelled the same. The only way words have the power to insult or offend are if they are given that power by those offended.
narcimund 0 #55 October 20, 2003 QuoteThe only way words have the power to insult or offend are if they are given that power by those offended. That's a fascinating idea but it does not have the virtue of being true. Intent plays a tremendous role in insult. And longstanding societal patterns of widespread intent play a correspondingly large role. That's why the word "nigger" is so powerful that many people believe it should never be spoken in ANY context. That strikes me as overkill, but nonetheless I'm reasonably careful not to say it in such a way as to cause upset. It's simple politeness to refrain from pissing people off unnecessarily. Sometimes it's necessary of course, but this can't be one of them, is it? On the other hand, I don't think anyone was pissed off. And that's why it's been a polite discussion of language instead of a steamed-up argument about rights or feelings or something. Yeah, there are so many dropzones with "creeper ramps" and the key to winning the speed star event at nationals is how fast you can fall. We all wear vertical spedometers to measure that. SkydiverRick 0 #68 October 21, 2003 Quote>Like all movies, they have some uninformed sections . . . Well, as it was written and directed by Guy Manos, I don't think you're going to get any closer to a 'real' skydiving movie in mainstream media. I think that Guy tried his best to get skydiving out into the public. Cut Away isn't going to win any awards, but I give Guy credit for trying. He had to try to please more than the 33,000 USPA members. never pull low......unless you are
chaoskitty 0 #69 October 21, 2003 Stephen Baldwin supposedly earned his A license while filming Cutaway. I thought it was alright.. just didnt buy Rodman as a skydiver.
