bob.dino 1 #5 September 13, 2007 Is the system shutting down to save power? Start | Control Panel | Power Options and see what the Power Scheme is. If not, it's probably overheating. Make sure there's airflow and that all the fans are still working. If so, open the case & use compressed air to blow the spiders and cobwebs away. If that still doesn't help, take it into the shop. Zep 0 #7 September 13, 2007 Probably the vacuum valves over heatingBuy a can of air (I use a small compressor) unplug every thing, take the side cover off an notice the amount of crap inside, the ventilator an heat sink which attach to the CPU are probably covered in dust, carefully blow the air over the heat sinks fins whilst holding the fan with a finger to stop it from spinning up. On second thought this is going to get complicated, much better take the puter to the shop for a cleaning, If you've got cash ask them to fit ventilators on the disk drives, an another ventilator on the case Oh an upgrading the CPU heat sink an ventilator might be a good idea Gone fishing

pwln 0 #9 September 13, 2007 That's not dust and spiders. It's from too much porn. It's pretty hard to see what is wrong with it over the internet. It "sounds" like a bad video card, but it could be more. Take it to someone, or bring someone to it.
cocheese 0 #10 September 13, 2007 No fan noise ever anymore and a funny smell like a tv from the early 70's. Me thinks it needs a cleaning. Like the rest of my place.
eeneR 1 #11 September 13, 2007 Odds are it is over heating, get in there with a vacuum. The dust cans will just blow it around everywhere. Also when you turn in on you should have a breeze coming out of the back side. You will see where the vent holes are. You will want to clean those as well from dust. if there is no breeze then the case fan is shot. If there is a breeze however the unit is still shutting down then the cooling fan for your processor took a shit. Odds are you will need new processor and potentially new board depending on how hot it actually got in there. I would advise not to keep running it, get it cleaned and check for air. The more you let it over heat the more damage will be done. Maybe too late already, hard to tell. If you are getting a "smell" from it, then things are cooking in there. She is not a "Dumb Blonde" - She is a "Light-Haired Detour Off The Information Superhighway." eeneR TF#72, FB#4130, Incauto
