low profile reserve handle on Wings

Recommended Posts

This one works great, and is not limited to any container.

Anyone have any pros/cons, good/bad experiences with the "low profile reserve handle" (D-ring about the same size as a pillow) on the Wings?

Thanks!

I have a pillow for my reserve. I can't offer any insight if the low profile on the Wings is a problem as I haven't had to use my reserve on my Wings. Knock on wood;)

I have used a pillow reserve handle on my other rig and it too was a low profile, and didn't have a problem finding it.

The low profile D-Ring by Wings is big enough to allow your thumb to get in there, but substantially lower profile than the traditional one.

It's a great altermative to the pillot. Since it's stiff, it's a bit harder to get tucked under as well.

Preference. But worth a try. They are very cost effective, so you can try it and if you don't like the feel, it can be your backup handle.... just in case you chuck one! ;)

I can't find a pic of the Wings low profile handle. Is it a triangular type shape, or same as mine or what?

Does it fit in the std D-ring pocket?

Actually that's incorect. Reserve handles are a TSO'd componant that not only are sized for specific containers, but must be manufactured from tested, certified, and traced materials, be manufactured by the TSO'd methods, in the TSO specified facility, and pass through the approved QC program.

That is to be "legal" in the USA anyway.;)

Actually that's incorrect. Reserve handles are a TSO'd component ...

The FAA allows riggers to determine compatibility of components, so a compatible TSO'd ripcord from a different manufacturer may be substituted for the original. For compatibility, I'd check the length, number of pins, and fit in the ripcord pocket. After that, my legal rigger responsibilities are done.

And my instructor responsibilities begin. As an instructor, I'd ask if a different handle shape were easier or harder to pull if needed, easier or harder to accidentally pull. That's a different issue than TSO legalities.

Agreed.

Does anyone have pictures of the low profile reserve handle (from Wings)?

Thanks!

According to Skymedic, it is just like this (it looks weird because it wasn't actually installed at the time, just put in the pocket):

Here is a picture of my low profile reserve handle. I have to admit, it is a little handle. It seems less likely to be pulled by someone or snaged by accident.
Take a look at the picture, as you can see, I can only fit two fingers on it!

I like the alternative that freeflajankie and I have, it only sticks out from the pocket a little, but is the normal length/fits into a std D-handle pocket. Not only do I like it for being somewhat less likely to be snagged, but the std D-handle was giving me bruises. This is of course partly due to me being 'thicker' than I should be. :(

edit to add - I found my low profile handle to be extremely easy to use. :)

you have the normal wings handle. and yes it's smaller than normal. but there's a smaller one that does not go out so far. First time I saw the regular wings handle I thought it was wrong cause it was so small. I like my low profile...it's worked just peachy for me now...a few too many times.

I have one of those on my swoop/aff/RW rig and like it, but would not consider it a good idea on a wingsuit rig, so I opted for the oblong, but still short one on my other, identical rig.
